I had no idea just how much I would love this book when I picked it up but it blew my socks off! A fun historical paranormal fantasy with an endearingly precocious main character. The doses of dry humour really put this one over the top for me. The setting (English countryside during the second World War), was an excellent choice. I will certainly be on the look out for the others in this series. ...more

I loved the premise of this one...anytime you mix horror and music, I'm there for it. I enjoyed the characters in the book and felt they were well developed and interesting. They truly felt like real people to me. I also appreciated the humour sprinkled throughout. Finally, the actual musical knowledge shared in the book was accurate and added a level of authenticity to the tale. I look eagerly forward to this authors next book!...more

I love thatBentley Little does an amazing job taking everyday situations and reinterpreting them through a very horrific and somewhat satirical lens. I enjoyed seeing a main character who was not the young perfect person , but rather a middle aged somewhat frumpy woman. The story itself was fun if a little predictable and the moral seemed to be , be careful what you wish for because you just might get it. I was also quite surprised that the "romantic element" that seems to be present in this genre was very tame and not a huge part of the story. It does sound as if this might be more of a thing in upcoming novels in the series. Overall a fun urban fantasy. ...more

Now I am no big fan of slugs ( gross!!!!!) and the gross out factor was high here. was it a believable plot ...hell no, but that's what made it so fun. Highly recommended for a trip back to the 80's and , in my opinion, the golden age of cheesy horror novels!
T.Kingfisher has solidified her place on my auto-buy shelf with this little gem of a story. Her style of writing is just so darn readable! I love the T.Kingfisher has solidified her place on my auto-buy shelf with this little gem of a story. Her style of writing is just so darn readable! I love the conversational tone and the generous sprinkling of humour. The characters are well developed and after the slowish burn set up....the ending is presented at breakneck speed, tying up loose ends and leaving a feeling of overall contentment. A haunted house story that is ultimately a commentary on dysfunctional family. Excellent read. ...more

Update 2023 reread /audio book listen I am just as impressed with this one upon a reread as I was with my initial reading. I love the narrative style....very conversational with lots of dry humour. I adore this series and in preparation for the release of "The Cursed Child" this summer, I am doing them all again. In the Philosopher's Stone we get our first glimpse into the wizarding world. On the surface it seems all rainbows and butterflies but scary things exist as well. This story is a testament to friendship and the power of loyalty ( both good and bad). Also a good starting point for discussion around what makes a "family". The only thing I am only sad about when I read this book is that I never received my Hogwarts letter.....sigh!...more
