I really love this book; Puck never fails to make me laugh even if I’m mad (O.O I sound like Meghan). Anyway, by reading this, I can see the POV of Puck between his love triangle with Ash and Meghan. You can see how much he’s suffering, hoping for nothing. He knows Meghan will never return his feelings, but still, he keep hoping, someday that time will come. Isn’t he loyal to her? Nowadays, you’ll rarely see someone as loyal as Puck, but so as the determination of Ash. After reading this, I keep pounding over myself, what if Ash didn’t come to their lives? What if Puck already made his move on Meghan? Why won’t he just move on and find someone else better, something that Meghan wants him to do? Why does he keep hoping she’ll return his feelings when ice boy is there? But if the ‘what if’s’ did happen, there’ll be no Iron Fey series and a very dramatic forbidden love between Summer and Winter. Ash said before that once you find the one for you, there’s nothing that’ll come between you and your chosen one. I quickly remembered the imprinting of the wolves in the Twilight series. It’s the same right? Maybe that’s why Puck’s having a hard time to move on for he already ‘imprints’ himself to Meghan for many years. I have always love forbidden loves. Take Percy and Annabeth from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Their godly parents were ancient enemies but still they found a way to be together. Also Sadie and Anubis from the Kane Chronicles series. The other is a god, but still they found a way (I suppose. I haven’t read the last book yet and am hoping to be able to read it soon! I’m dying to know who Sadie chose! I really wish it’s Anubis! **cross fingers**). Ok, back to the topic. Summer’s Crossing is really enjoyable and fun to read (thanks to Puck). Puck is a very fun character to be around with, with his annoying, carefree and happy go lucky attitude, lopsided grin and his pranks, he’ll never fail you. He’s really the opposite of Ash- the princeling who is cold, serious and always had a plan in mind. ...more |

I love this book! It is the best book in the Iron Fey series! XD I love happy endings (though tragedies are fine with me)! With this book, you can see how powerful true love is! Take Ash and Meghan for example, despite the hardships and challenges they experienced, they still survive and eventually Ash found a way to be with Meghan. And Iron Knight is all about Ash's adventure to seek what he needed to have- a soul. With Puck, Grimalkin, Ariella (who is actually alive all this time) and the Big Bad Wolf, they managed to get to the End of the World as pass through different trials. Ash passed through the last three trials the Guardian gave him. But, there should be someone who is willing to sacrifice his life for Ash to earn a soul. Ariella willingly sacrificed herself so that Ash can be human. Ariella is a nice girl, I adore her. She had done so many sacrifices and gave up everything even her love for Ash. Ariella Tullaryn will always stay in my heart, she'll always be remembered. Now, on the Meghan/Ash moment, I can't stop squealing. I'm just so happy for them! Here's the scene where the lovers had a reunion (I wish on Mark of Athena, when Percy and Annabeth will have a reunion, it'll be as romantic as this!): (view spoiler)[ "let's take a break," I said, and stood up, feeling my back pop as I stretched. Fix chittered a question, the junk on his back swaying as he turned to me. "We've been here nearly four hours," I replied. "I'm hungry, I have a headache and my butt has gone numb from sitting on that torture device. Let's pick back up in an hour, yes?" Fiz warbled an agreement, but at that moment, the doors of the throne room swung open with a groan, and Glitch walked in. Scores of Iron fey scurried aside as the First Lieutenant marched down the aisle to the foot of the throne, his sharp face intense. Behind him, a robed, hooded figure matched his steps, cloak torn and dusty from travel, a dark cowl hiding its face. "Majesty." Glitch bowed at the foot of the dais, and though his voice was solemn, I could sense my First Lieutenant was trying hard not to smile. "This traveler has come far to request an audience with you. I know you are very busy at the moment, but as he has come a great distance, perhaps you could hear him out." Glitch bowed again and backed away, melting into the crowd. I shot him a look, but he was staring straight ahead, giving nothing away. The First Lieutenant normally didn't take it upon himself to show petitioners to the throne room, having other duties that kept him busy, like managing the army. If he made an exception for this traveler, he must've thought it was very important. I frowned and looked at the stranger in the middle of the hall, waiting for me to acknowledge him. "Come forward," I said. He approached the foot of the throne and sank to one knee, bowing his cowled head. "Where have you come from, traveler?" "I have come from the End of the World," said a quiet voice that made my heart stop beating. "From the River of Dreams, through the gauntlet and the Briars and the Deep Wyld, in order to stand before you today. I have but one request-to take my place at your side. To resume my duty as your knight, and to protect you and your kingdom for as long as I draw breath." He raised his head and pushed back the hood, and a gasp went around the thron room. "I am still yours, my queen," Ash said, looking me straight in the eye. "If you'll have me." For a moment, the shock held me immobile. He couldn't be here; it was impossible. No normal fey could set foot in the Iron Realm and live. And yet, here he was, looking tired and dusty and slightly ragged, but completely fine. "Ash," I whispered, stepping toward him in a daze. He didn't move, gazing up at me with those intense silver eyes I knew so well. Reaching down, I drew him to his feet, taking in the lean, muscular frame, the unruly black hair, covered in dust from his travels, the way he was looking at me, as if the entire court had disappeared, and we were the only two people in the world. "You're here," I murmured, reaching out to touch him, hardly believing this was real. "You came back." Ash's breath hitched, and he put his hand over mine. "I came home." Our fragile composure shattered. I stepped into him, holding him tight and he hugged me close as the room around us exploded with noise. Applause and cheers rose into the air, but I barely heard any of it. Ash was real. I could feel his breath on my neck, feel his heart pounding with mine. I didn't know how he could be here; it should've been impossible, but I didn't want to face that now. If this was a dream, I wanted to have one perfect moment of happiness, before reality intruded and I'd have to let him go. Finally, I pulled back to look at him, running a palm over his cheek, as he gazed at me with those eyes I could lose myself in. And I finally voiced the question that I had been dreading, not sure I wanted to know the answer. "How?" Amazingly, Ash smiled. "I told you I'd find a way, didn't I?" He chuckled at my disbelief, and I could sense the secret pride-the knowledge that he had set out to do something impossible and had succeeded. Taking my hand, he guided it to his chest, where I could feel his heartbeat thudding against my palm. "I became human. I went to the ends of the Nevernever and found my soul." "What?" I pulled back to look at him, really look at him. He did seem a little different than before. Maybe his features were a little less sharp, and he wasn't quite as cold, but he still had those intense silver eyes, the same unruly hair. He might have been human now, but he was still Ash, still the same person I'd fallen in love with, loved still with my entire heart. And if he had really found a soul and become human... We can be together. We can be together without fear of anything now. He really did it. Ash blinked under my scrutiny. "Do I pass?" he almost whispered. "Wait a minute." Frowning slightly I reached up and brushed his hair back, revealing a graceful, pointed ear. "If you're human, how do you explain that?" Ash grinned. His eyes sparkled, and I could suddenly see the soul shining through, bright and pure and beautiful. "Apparently, I have a little fey magic still left in me," he said, running his fingers through my hair, stroking my cheek with his thumb. "Enough to keep up with the rest of the Faery, anyway. Maybe enough to keep from growing old." He laughed softly, as if the very idea thrilled him. "Better get used to this face, your Majesty. I plan to be here a long, long time. Probably forever." My eyes misted over, and there was a balloon in my chest, swelling with happiness, pushing away the darkness until there was no room for anything but joy. But all I could think to say was, "Aren't you already centuries old?" Ash lowered his head, drawing us even closer. "I went to the End of the World for you, and all you have to say is how well I've aged?" But his eyes danced, and he was still smiling. I decided I like this Ash; this light, free creature, as if a soul had unlocked a part of him that hadn't been allowed to surface in the chill of the Winter Court. It made me feel I could tease him a little more. "I didn't say anything about aging well-" But at that moment, amid the cheers and whistles of the Iron Court, Ashallayn'darkmyr Tallyn gently took my face in his hands and covered my mouth with his own, beginning the first day of our forever exactly as he should. At least, **spoiler alert** The pain was still there, but it was a dull, distant thing now, insignificant. Somewhere far away, someone called my name. At least, I thought it was my name. I blinked, trying to focus, but my thoughts were fuzzy and slipped away like smoke, and I was too tired to call them back. Closing my eyes, I let myself drift, wanting nothing but the chance to rest. Surely I had earned it by now. Defeating a false king and saving all of Faery- there were certainly worse ways to die. But, even as I hovered on the edge of the void, I could still feel the labored heartbeat of the land, the poisoned trail Ferrum had carved on his journey, and the corruption seeping into the Nevernever. Just because Ferrum was gone didn't mean the Iron Realm would disappear. The last of the Iron King's power still flickered inside me, weakly, a candle held up to the wind. It was still my responsibility, this power. What would happen to it when I died? Who would I give it to? Who could I give it to, this new glamour of Summer and Iron, without killing them? "Meghan!" The voice called me again, and I recognized it now. It was his voice, the voice of my knight, frantic and tormented, pulling me back from the void. "Meghan, no!" it pleaded, echoing in the blackness. "Don't do this. Come on, wake up. Please." The last word was a desperate, whispered sob and I opened my eyes. Ash peered down at me, silver eyes suspiciously bright, his face pale and wan. Cradled in his arms, I blinked as the sounds of the world came back, the crackle of the energy above, the shuffle of the metal boots from the Iron Knights still surrounding us. I spared a quick glance over and saw that all the knights had laid down their arms and were now watching us with identical grave expressions, waiting. I looked back at Ash, seeing Puck standing over his shoulder as well, white and pale. "Ash," I whispered, my voice sounding weak and breathy in my ears. "I'm so sorry. I didn't think... now you'll fade away because of me, because I asked you to take that vow." He pressed his face to my hair, closing his eyes. "If you are gone," he whispered back, his voice shaking, "then I will welcome nonexistence. There will be nothing left for me to live for." He pulled back his silver eyes boring into mine. "There's still time," he murmured, standing easily with me in his arms. "We have to get you to a healer." Puck was suddenly there, intense and angry, his hair a stark contrast to his pale face. "Dammit, Meghan," he snapped. "What the hell were you thinking? We have to get you out of here, now!" He eyed the ring of knights and his eyes narrowed. "You think the bucket brigade will let us go, or should I carved a path through them?" "No," I whispered, clutching Ash's shirt. They both looked at me in surprise. "I can't go to a healer. Take me..." I winced and fought a gasp as a bolt of pain clawed my stomach, and Ash's grip tightened. "Take me to the tree," I forced out. "The ruins. I have to go back...to where it all began." He stared at me, expressionless, but a tremor went through him. "No," he whispered, but it was more of a plea. "Princess, there's no time!" Puck stalked forward, desperate. "Don't be stupid! If we don't get you to a healer now, you'll die!" I ignored Puck, holding Ash's gaze, steeling myself for what I had to do. "Ash," I whispered, tears flooding my eyes. "Please. I don't have...much time left. This is my last request. I have to...get to that tree. Please." He closed his eyes, and a single tear crawled down his cheek. I knew I was asking him to do the impossible, and it was tearing me apart that Ash was suffering. But at least I would make it right in the end. I'd promise him that much. "Don't listen to her, prince." Puck sounded almost frantic then, grabbing Ash by the shoulder. "She's delirious. Get to a healer, dammit. Don't tell me you're going to listen to this insanity." "Puck," I whispered, but suddenly noticed the empty silver chain, dangling from Ash's chest. The amulet was gone. Where the crystal had once been, only a blackened shard remained. It must've finally shattered during the fight with Rowan. My stomach twisted. "Oh, God, Ash," I breathed. "The amulet. You won't be protected in the Iron Kingdom anymore. Have someone else take me back." He raised his head, his eyes bleak but determined, a look I'd seen before, when he had nothing left to lose. "I'll take you." "No, you won't!" Puck stepped in front of us, and suddenly his dagger was pressed against Ash's throat. Ash didn't move, and Puck leaned in, his face savage. "You'll take her to a healer, prince, or so help me I will cut out that piece of ice you call a heart and take her myself." "Puck," I whispered again," please." He didn't look at me, but tears brimmed at the corners of his eyes, and the hand holding the dagger trembled. "I have t-to do this," I went on, as Ash and Puck continued their staredown, neither giving an inch. "This...is the only way to save everything. Please." He drew in a shaky breath. "How can you ask me to let you die?" he choked, still keeping the blade at the prince's throat. A thread of blood formed under the knife, and ran down to Ash's collar. "I'd do anything for you, Meghan. Just...not that. Not that." Gently, I reached up and closed my fingers around the knife hilt, easing it down and away from Ash's neck. Puck resisted for a moment, then stepped back with a sob. The dagger fell from his grip and clanged to the floor. "Are you sure this is what you want, princess?" His voice was strangled, his eyes begging me to change my mind. "No," I whispered, as my own tears spilled over, and the arms around me tightened. Of course it wasn't. I wanted to live. I wanted to see my family and finish school and travel to distant places I'd only read about. I wanted to laugh with Puck and love with Ash, and do all those things that normal people took for granted. But I couldn't. I was given this power, this responsibility. And I had to finish what I'd started once and for all. "No, Puck, it isn't. But, this is how it has to be." Puck took my hand, gripping it as if he could keep me here just by holding on. (Skip) "Take care of her, ice boy," he said, smiling as he backed up several paces. "I guess I won't be seeing you, either, will I? It was... fun, while it lasted." s "I'm sorry we didn't get to kill each other," Ash said quietly. Puck chuckled and bent to retrieve his fallen dagger. "My one and only regret. Too bad, that would have been an epic fight." Straightening, he gave us that old, stupid grin, raising a hand in farewell. "See you around, lovebirds." Glamour rippled through the air, and Puck disintegrated into a flock of screaming ravens, flapping wildly as they scattered to all corners of the room. The knights ducked as the birds swooped over their heads, cawing in their harsh, mocking voices. Then the birds vanished into the darkness, the sound of wings disappeared, and Puck was gone. THE KNIGHT LET US THROUGH without a fight, bowing their heads as we passed. Some of them even raised their swords, as if in salute, but I didn't really notice much. Cradled gently in Ash's arms, my body and mind numb to everything, I concentrated on not falling asleep, knowing if I did I might never open my eyes. Soon I could rest, give in to the exhaustion claiming my body, lie back and forget it all, but I had one last thing to do. And then I could finally let it all go. Soft flakes touched my cheek, and I looked up. We were outside the fortress now, standing at the top of a flight of stairs, gazing down at the field. The sounds of battle had ceased, and silence hung over the field as every eye, be it Summer, Winter, or Iron, turned in my direction. Everyone was frozen staring at me in shock, unsure of what to do. Ash never stopped, walking deliberately forward, his face unreadable, and the ranks of Summer, Winter and Iron fey parted for him without a word. Faces passed by me, silent in the falling ash. Diode, his whirling eyes wide with alarm. Spikerail and his herd, lowering their heads as we walked by. Gremlins trailed us, hushed and grim, weaving their way through the crowd. Mab and Oberon came into view, their eyes at once blank and sympathetic. Ash didn't stop, even for Mab. He marched by the faery rulers without even a glance, continuing through the gray drifts, until we reached the edge of the field and the huge frost dragon waiting for us. The dragon shifted, settling back to stare at the Winter prince with ice-blue eyes. "Take us into the Iron Realm." Ash's voice was soft, but several degrees below freezing, leaving no room for argument. "Now." (Skip) I DIDN'T REMEMBER FLYING. I didn't remember landing. Just a soft thump as Ash slid off the dragon's back onto solid ground again. Raising my head from his chest, I gazed around. The landscape was blurred and fuzzy, like a fading, out-of-focus camera, until I realized it was me and not the surroundings. Everything was gray and dark, but I could still make out the tree, the great iron oak, rising from the tower ruins to brush the sky. Behind us, the dragon made a low rumble that sounded like a question. "Yes, go," Ash murmured without turning around, and there was a blast of wind that signaled the dragon had fled, back to the Nevernever where it wouldn't be poisoned. I noted, in my numb state of mind, that Ash didn't tell it to wait for him. Because he wasn't planning to leave, either. Ash's step was firm as he carried me through the tower, drifting through the empty ruins, slipping through the shadows, until we reached the base of the tree. Only when we stepped into the central chamber and the branches loomed above us did he start to tremble. But his voice was steady, and his grip didn't loosen as he approached the trunk and stopped, lowering his head to mine. "We're here," he murmured. I closed my eyes and reached out with my remaining glamour, feeling the pulsing heart of the tree and the roots, extending deep into the earth. "Lay me down... at the base," I whispered. He hesitated, but then stepped beneath the tree and knelt, depositing me gently on the ground between two giant roots. And he stayed there, kneeling beside me, holding my hand in his. Something splashed the back of my hand, cold as spring water, crystallizing to my skin. A faery's tears. I gazed up at him and tried for a smile, tried to be brave, to show him that none of this was his fault. That this was how it had to be. His eyes glimmered in the darkness, bright and anguished. I squeezed his hand. "It was... quite a ride, wasn't it?" I whispered, as my own tears ran down my cheek, staining the hard ground. "I'm sorry, Ash. I wish...we had more time. I wish...I could've gone with you...but things didn't quite work out, did they?" Ash brought my hand to his lips, his eyes never leaving mind. "I love you, Meghan Chase," he murmured against my skin. "For the rest of my life, however long we have left. I'll consider it an honor to die beside you." I took a deep breath, chasing back the darkness on the edge of my vision. Now came the hardest part, the part I'd been dreading. I didn't want to die, and even more, I didn't want to die alone. The thought made my stomach clench, and my breath come in short, panicked gasps. But Ash would not fade away. I would not let him die because of his vow. This was the last unselfish thing I could do for him. He had been with me every step of the way; now it was my turn to set him free. "Ash." I reached up and touched his cheek, tracing the line of his jaw. "I love you. Never forget that. And I...I wanted to live the rest of my life with you. But..." And I paused, trying to catch my breath. It was getting hard even to speak, and Ash's outline was fading at the edges. I blinked hard to keep him in focus. "But I...I can't let you die because of me," I continued, seeing understanding dawn in his eyes, followed by alarm. "I won't allow it." "Meghan, no." "It's alright if you hate me," I continued, speaking faster so he couldn't change my mind. "in fact, that might be for the best. Hate me, so you can find someone... someone else to love. But I want you to live, Ash. You have so much to live for." "Please." Ash gripped my hand," Don't do this." "I release you," I whispered. "From your vow of knighthood, and the promises you made. Your service to me is done, Ash. You're free." Ash bowed his head, shoulders heaving. I swallowed the bitter lump in my throat, my stomach churning painfully. It was done. I hated myself for it, but it was the right thing to do. I'd asked so much of him already. Even if he was prepared to die, I wasn't going to let that happen. "Now," I said, releasing his hand. "Get out of here, Ash. Before it's too late." "No." "Ash, you can't stay. The amulet is gone. If you're here much longer, you'll die." Ash said nothing. But I knew that stubborn set of his shoulders, the flare of resolve around him, and I knew he would stay with me regardless. And so, I did the only thing I could think of. He would curse the day he met the human girl in the wyldwood, vow to never, ever, fall in love again. But he would live. "Ashallyn'darkmyr Tallyn," I said, and he closed his eyes," by the power of your True Name, leave the Iron Realm right now." I turned my head so I wouldn't see him, forcing out the last words. "And don't come back." I'm so sorry, Ash. But please, live for me. If anyone deserves to come out of this alive, it's you. A soft noise, almost a sob. Ash rose, hesitated, as if fighting the compulsion to obey. "I will always be your knight, Meghan Chase," he whispered in a strained voice, as if every moment he remained was painful to him. "And I swear, if there is a way for us to be together, I will find it. No matter how long it takes. If I have to chase your soul to the ends of eternity, I won't stop until I find you, I promise." And then he was gone. Alone at the base of the giant oak, I lay back, fighting the urge to cry, to scream out my fear and desolation. There was no time for that anymore. The world was getting dark, and I had one last thing I had to do. Closing my eyes, I reached out with my glamour, feeling both Summer and Iron rise up in response. Cautiously, I probed the roots of the giant oak, following them deep into the cracked, dry earth, sensing the devastation of the land around it. The Iron glamour that was killing one species but sustaining another. I thought of my family. Of Mom and Luke and Ethan, still waiting for me at home. I thought of my human dad, Paul, and my real father, the Summer King. Of everyone I had met along the way: Glitch, the rebels, Razor. Ironhorse. They were of the Iron Kingdom, but they were still fey. They deserved a chance to live, just like everyone else. I thought of Grimalkin, and Puck. My wise teacher and my brave, loyal best friend. They would live, I would make certain of that. They would laugh and inspire ballads and collect favors until the end of time. This was for them. And for my knight, who had given everything for me. Who would've been there to the very end, had I let him. Ash, Puck, everyone. I love you all. Remember me. And in one final, determined push, I gathered the power of the Iron King into a massive, swirling ball and sent it deep into the roots of the giant oak. A shudder went through the tree, continuing into the land around it, like ripples on a glassy pond. It radiated outward, spreading to the dead trees and vegetation, and the once withered plants stirred as the new glamour touched their roots. I sensed the land waking up, drinking in the new magic, healing the poison that the Iron glamour had seeped into the land. Trees straightened, unfurling new leaves from steel branches. The hard obsidian plain shuddered as green sprouts pushed their way to the surface. The mottled yellow clouds began to break apart, showing blue sky and sun peeking through the cracks. A cool breeze blew in from somewhere, cooling my face and causing a rain of leaves to flutter around me. The air smelled of earth and new grass. Lulled into a deep peace, listening to the sounds of growing things all around me, I closed my eyes and finally surrendered to the darkness. (Skip some parts) SOMETHING TOUCHED MY FACE, and I opened my eyes. A small, anxious face stared into mine, eyes glowing green, huge ears fanning away from its head. Razor squawked as I blinked at him, then grinned in delight. "Master!" I groaned and waved him off. My body felt weak, pounded on and beaten into submission, but thankfully, there wasn't any lingering pain. Above me, the metal branches of the great oak waved gently in the wind, sunlight slanting through the leaves and dappling the ground. My fingers brushed cool grass as I carefully eased myself into a sitting position, gazing around in astonishment. I was surrounded by Iron fey. Gremlins and Iron knights, hacker elves and clockwork hounds, wiremen, dwarves, spider-hags and more. Glitch stood silently with his arm in a sling, next to Spikerail and two of his iron horses, watching me with solemn eyes. I could feel them, all of them. I could feel every heartbeat, sense the Iron glamour coursing through them, pulsing in time with the land, flowing through me. I knew the edges of my realm, brushing against the Nevernever, not spreading, not corrupting, content to sit within its new boundaries. I felt every tree and bush and blade of grass, spread before me like a seamless patchwork quilt. And, if I closed my eyes and really concentrated, I could hear my own heartbeat, and the pulse of the land, echoing it. What will you do now, Meghan Chase? I understood. This was my fate, my destiny. I knew what had to be done. Pulling myself upright, I took a step forward, away from the trunk, standing on my own. As one, every Iron fey, rank upon rank of them, bowed their heads and sank to their knees. Even Glitch, bending down awkwardly, holding on to a kneeling Spikerail for support. Even Razor and the gremlins, burying their faces in the grass. The Iron knights clanked in unison as they drew their swords and knelt, the sword points jammed into the earth. In the silence, I gazed out over the mass of kneeling fey and raised my voice. I don't know why I said it, but deep down, I knew it was right. My words echoed over the crowd, sealing my fate. It would be a hard road, and I had a lot of work ahead of me, but in the end, this was the only possible outcome. "My name is Meghan Chase, and I am the Iron Queen." EPILOGUE (Skip) Something was bounding toward me over the grass, a shadow in the predawn light. Something large and furry and vaguely familiar. A wolf? No, a dog! A big, shaggy...no, that couldn't be right... "Beau?" I gasped, as the huge German shepherd slammed into me with the force of a freight train, nearly knocking me down. It was Beau. I laughed as his big paws muddied my shirt and his enormous tongue slapped the side of my face. (Skip) I stopped, my fingers brushing something thin and metallic looped around his neck, under his shaggy fur. Wondering if it was a collar with tags, I calmed Beau long enough to pull it free, drawing it over his ears and holding it up for a closer look. It was a familiar silver chain, on which hung the remains of a shattered amulet, glinting in the predawn light. My heart skipped a beat. With Beau still dancing at my feet, I looked around, scanning the front yard and the edge of the trees. He couldn't be here. I'd sent him away, released him from his vows. He should hate me. And yet... here it was. For a few heart-pounding moments, I waited. (Skip many parts) Ash "She's gone." Goodfellow shot him a sideways glance. "What now?" He sighed. "I have something to do," he murmured. "A promise to keep." "Where are we going? Really. Do enlighten me." "We're going to find a certain cat." <3 ...more |

Impressive. That's the best word I can think of while reading this book. Every character is likable. Everything's impressive. From plot to characters, Impressive. That's the best word I can think of while reading this book. Every character is likable. Everything's impressive. From plot to characters, settings, sequence, ideas and many others. The love triangle is quite dramatic too though I must say from the start, I already know to whom Meghan will end up with. Team Ash! He reminds me of Will Herondale from the Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare, ah another great series I would totally recommend. Anyway, kudos to Julie Kagawa for making such an amazing book and series. It's a great first installment to start for a great series ahead. There are some YA book series where the first book is not that good but eventually get better as the series progressed on like The House of Night series by Kristin Cast and her mother, P.C. Cast. I love the ideas of faeries in the mortal world, roaming around and is afraid of iron. Iron can be a weapon now. **Grins evilly** I wonder if the vitamin Iron will also affect them. XD Over all, I really enjoyed the first book and can't wait to read The Iron Daughter. I'm giving The Iron King by Julie Kagawa five stars! A MUST READ! ...more |

From the moment I had read the first chapter, I know that this'll be a great book. And yes, it didn't fail me but instead, exceeded my expectations. Tris and Four, the two main characters developed well. I remember from the first time I read about Four sitting beside Tris on dinner, I kept squealing. All Tris/Four moments are cute and romantic that gives satisfaction to fan girls. :) Plot Summary: (view spoiler)[ The book is set in a futuristic world where Chicago is divided to five factions- Abnegation the Selfless, Amity the Peaceful, Erudite the Wise, Candor the Honest and Dauntless the Brave. Beatrice "Tris" Prior is a girl from Abnegation. All her life, she was trained to be selfless, help other people and give them anything they needed. But Tris knew deep inside that she wasn't selfless. She was selfish. And then there's the aptitude test (a test that sixteen year old undergo to determine which faction they truly belong) to worry about. When Beatrice took the test, she realized she was not like any other. She's a Divergent, someone who couldn't be controlled. She was given three choices: Abnegation, Erudite or Dauntless. She chose Dauntless and had a hard time adjusting and she kept pondering if she made the right choice. She made friends and of course, enemies. She felt infatuated to one of her instructors, Four. She faced a lot of things and succeeded. She was now a real Dauntless after going through a lot of things. She thought she'll have a happy life, being a Dauntless and with her love, Four. But, the Erudite's leader, Jeanine had something in her sleeves. She was blind with the need of power and wanted to overthrow the Abnegation in ruling the government. She made this serum that'll control everyone's mind using a computer. Tris also knew Divergents were in danger. She discovered more and eventually fell in love with Four whose real name is Tobias. After the ceremony where she was the first for completing the three tests on the initiation, Jeanine pulled her plan into action. All of the Dauntless were being controlled by the serum. They marched to the Abnegation, killing everyone on their way. Tris also discovered that Tobias was also a Divergent like her but Jeanine found a way to control him. Trapped inside a room, bleeding, despair filled Tris. Not until her mom, who is also a Divergent and once a Dauntless, saved her but died in the process. Tris found her way to the underground basement where her family and other Abnegation survivors were hiding. She was reunited with her family but that didn't last long. Tris made a plan to save everyone. Tris with three other companions went to the Dauntless headquarters and proceeded to go to the control room. Tris's father also died in the process but she managed to save everyone including Tobias. The ending is, the five of them jumped in the train going to the Amity headquarters. (hide spoiler)] What I Love: -The plot! It is truly amazing! A world where there were five factions... Astounding. -The characters! Beatrice Prior is a strong girl that almost everyone can relate to. Four is like any other male protagonist, someone who is like our typical 'almost-perfect' guys who ends up with the main protagonists. And many other very admirable characters! -Writing style! I also love it for Ms. Veronica Roth wrote so well, I finished reading Divergent in just one sitting! -The cover. It is amazing and very unique. I love how the fire blazed inside a gold ring and the blue sky at the background. I still have no idea why the chosen cover is that, but it is truly beautiful. What I Dislike: -The ending! So, so so cliffhanger-y! DX Seriously, what's up with authors nowadays ending their books in cliffhangers? Conclusion: Divergent by Veronica Roth is a truly great dystopian YA novel that everyone will surely love! It is well-planned and written excellently! Everyone who loves The Hunger Games will surely like this one! It's like the next Hunger Games! XD I'm giving this five stars for the well-planned plot full of action, for the excellent writing style, the likable characters that everyone can relate to and the cover that is very unique and beautiful. A MUST READ! ...more |

EDIT: 01/13/13 Just saw how wrong some of my grammar were in this review and how I did not properly explained why I only gave this book 2 stars. So, I guess I shall rewrite it. Anyway, as of now, I shall warn you about this review I wrote. 1st: It is angsty. 2nd: there are a lot of wrong grammars. 3rd: I failed to explain my side logically. 4th: I think I misunderstood the ending (but that still didn't change my perspective to this whole trilogy). 5th: If you LOVE the ending of this book, I recommend NOT to continue reading any further. This review is full of rants towards that matter. So, until I rewrite this, you can't read this. BUT if you also dislike the ending, and reading quite a lot of wrong grammars is okay with you, then you may proceed. We might have the same perspective in this book. My Review: (view spoiler)[ (view spoiler)[ (view spoiler)[ Ok, I must admit, I only like this book. Not love or anything beyond like (which is unusual for the last two books of the Kane Chronicles trilogy totally made me a fan girl). This series made me interested in mythologies and discover Rick Riordan (who is my number one favorite author) and check out his other books and read one of the best book series in the world, the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series that totally live up in my expectations and gave every avid fan of Percabeth their satisfaction. But this… Oh Hades! Don’t even get me started on the Walt/Sadie/Anubis love triangle! Anyway, I’d like to reserve the criticisms for later. Let’s focus first on the positive side, shall we? I enjoyed this book. I would have given it five stars if I didn’t read what happened to Walt and Anubis. If you’re in love with Zarter (Zia/Carter) you’ll appreciate this book as much as I do (but sadly, I’m more in love with Sanubis and again, I’ll tell you later why I only gave this book three stars). There are some scenes that made me crack up like this: (view spoiler)[ “That’s my boy!” Set shouted. “Shut up, Father,” Anubis said. (hide spoiler)] Isn’t Anubis adorable? If you didn’t crack up on that one, well, you haven’t read the whole situation why they said that. So, I don’t blame you. Getting out of topic again eh? Back to the topic, there are so many unexpected things happening. It’s not that bad for a last book (though the ending hinted something for some future books) it totally live up to my expectations (if you don’t count the love triangle of Sadie). We met more and more Egyptian gods like Shu (ah, my favorite Egyptian god after Anubis) and Hapi. Where’s Tefnut? She’s my favorite Egyptian goddess and didn’t even appear in any book in this trilogy! It also helps us to know more about the world of Egyptian mythology with the Land of Demons, sheut (aka shadows being part of our soul) and many more. In romance, Rick Riordan did a great job on Zarter. I couldn’t help but to squeal whenever they have moments! Criticism part. My criticism is not about how the book is written, plot and/or other things but on the love triangle between Walt/Sadie/Anubis. I DISLIKE IT!!! Ever since I started reading The Red Pyramid, whenever Sadie and Anubis have moments, I always squeal, highlight them on the book and rereading it all over again and even adding some comments! I had (take note of the past tense) love Sanubis with all my life! Forbidden love always interest me and I had only read few forbidden loves that actually live up to my expectations like the true love between Ash and Meghan from the Iron Fey series. Now, that’s what I call a very interesting forbidden love! They did everything so that they can be together and Ash even went to the End of the World to have a soul so that he’ll be with Meghan forever! But this… Urgh! The Sanubis in this book is a TOTAL disappointment! Oh come on! Give me a break! I know that (view spoiler)[ Anubis made Walt as his host that made the dying boy’s life expand and both end up with Sadie and that they’re two inhabiting one body that are just in harmony thanks to their similarities and their feelings for Sadie and everything. (hide spoiler)] Puh-lease! THIS IS NOT WHAT AN ADDICTED SANUBIS FAN LIKE ME EXPECT! Why can’t the Egyptian gods just offer Sadie immortality and be a goddess to be with Anubis? After all Sadie deserved it! Why can Greek gods offer Percy immortality thanks to the heroic deeds (just like Sadie and Carter did) he did and Egyptians can’t? Because they can’t and Greeks can? Give me a break! I had supported Kane Chronicles since the first book was published. I waited for a year for the Throne of Fire and waited another one for the last book, hoping to find more Sanubis that’ll satisfy my needs. But no! It is so obvious that Sadie and Walt ended up together! And it is totally heartbreaking for a Sanubis fan like me. Walt had his own advantages! It’s his body, so when he kiss Sadie, it’s his own pleasure not Anubis’s! And Anubis? He’s just there watching them even if he’s in the same body. Poor boy! He doesn’t deserve that! I am so glad the book didn’t reach Philippines! I’m so glad I just found this in the internet! I’m so glad I spent my money I intend to buy for this book to my mom on Mother’s Day. As a once Sanubis fan, I won’t buy this book. And I thought Kane Chronicles is a great series! I don’t like RR’s new writing style in Romance, the protagonist ending up with his second love not the first. Anyway, that’s where my rant about romance ends. If there’s a new book in this series (which I slightly doubt but the ending totally says that there’s a next one) I’m not going to buy it unless I’ll find it interesting (which I highly doubt). That’s all. Though if RR will write a next book about a crossover between Kane Chronicles and Percy Jackson and the Olympians, I might buy it. Again, it hinted on the ending about Long Island and everything. Before I go, here’s the last chapter of the book. Thought you might wanna know what I meant with the Sanubis/Salt and hinted stuff. (view spoiler)[ HE’D CHANGED HIS LOOK AGAIN. His amulets were gone except for one- the shen that matched mine. He wore a black muscle shirt, black jeans, a black leather duster, and black combat boots-a sort of mix of Anubis’s and Walt’s styles, but it made him look like someone entirely different and new. Yet his eyes were quite familiar-warm, dark brown, and lovely. When he smiled, my heart fluttered as it always had. “So,” I said, “is this another goodbye? I’ve had quite enough goodbyes today.” “Actually,” Walt said,” It’s more of a hello. My name’s Walt Stone, from Seattle. I’d like to join the party.” He held out his hand, still smiling slyly. He was repeating exactly what he’d said the first time we met, when he arrived at Brooklyn House last spring. Instead of taking hand, I punched him in the chest. “Ow,” he complained. But I doubt that I’d hurt him. He had quite a solid chest. “You think you can just merge with a god and surprise me like that?” I demanded. “ Oh by the way, I’m actually two minds in one body . I don’t appreciate being taken off guard.” “I did try to tell you,” he said. “Several times. Anubis did too. We kept getting interrupted. Mostly by you talking a lot.” “ “No excuse.” I folded my arms and scowled as best as I could. “My mum seems to think I should go easy on you because this is all very new to you. But I’m still cross. It’s confusing enough, you know, liking someone, without their morphing into a god whom I also like.” “So you do like me.” “Stop trying to distract me! Are you truly asking to stay here?” Walt nodded. He was very close now. He smelled good, like vanilla candles. I tried to remember if that Walt’s scent or Anubis’s. Honestly, I couldn’t recall. “I’ve still got a lot to learn,” he said. “I don’t need to stick with charm-making anymore. I can do more intensive magic-the path of Anubis. No one’s ever done that before.” “Discovering new magical ways to annoy me?” He tilted his head. “I could do amazing tricks with mummy linen. For instance, if someone talks too much, I could summon a gag-“ “Don’t you dare!” He took my hand. I gave him a defiant scowl, but I didn’t take back my hand. “I’m still Walt,” he said. “I’m still mortal. Anubis can stay in this world as long as I’m his host. I’m hoping to live a good long life. Neither of us ever thought that was possible. SO I’m not going anywhere, unless you want me to leave.” My eyes probably answered for me: No, please. Not ever. But I couldn’t very well give him the satisfaction of me saying that out loud, could I? Boys can get so full of themselves. “Well,” I grumbled,” I suppose I could tolerate it.” “I owe you a dance.” Walt put his other hand on my waist-a traditional pose, very old-fashions, as Anubis had done when we waltzed at the Brooklyn Academy. My Gran would’ve approved. “May I?” he asked. “Here?” I said. “Won’t your chaperone Shu interrupt?” “Like I said, I’m mortal now. He’ll let us dance, though I’m sure he’s keeping an eye on us to make sure we behave.” “To make sure you behave,” I snipped. “I’m a proper young lady.” Walt laughed. I supposed it was funny. Proper wasn’t the first word normally used to describe me. I pounded his chest again, though I’ll admit not very hard. I put my hand on his shoulder. “I’ll have you remember,” I warned,” that my father if your employer in the Underworld. You’d best mind your manners.” “Yes, ma’am,” Walt said. He leaned down and kissed me. All my anger melted into my shoes. We started to dance. There was no music, no ghostly dancers, no floating on air-nothing magic about it. Freak watched us curiously, no doubt wondering how this activity was going to produce turkeys to feed the griffin. The old tar roof creaked under our feet. I was still quite tired from our long battle, and I hadn’t cleaned up properly. No doubt I looked horrid. I wanted to melt into Walt’s arms, which is basically what I did. “So you’ll let me stick around?” he asked, his breath warm on my scalp. “Let me experience a typical teenage life?” “I suppose.” I looked up at him. It took no effort at all to slip my vision fort at all to slip my vision into the Duat and see Anubis there, just under the surface. But it really wasn’t necessary. This was a new boy in front of me, and he was everything I liked. “Not that I’m an expert myself, but there is one rule I insist on.” “Yes?” “If anyone asks you if you’re taken,” I said,” the answer if yes .” “I think I can live with that,” he promised. “Good,” I said. “Because you don’t want to see me be cross.” “too late.” “Shut up and dance, Walt.” We did-with the music of a psychotic griffin screaming behind us, and the sirens and horns of Brooklyn wailing below. It was quite romantic. So there you have it. We’ve returned to Brooklyn House. The various catastrophes plaguing the world have lessened-at least somewhat-and we are dealing with an influx of new initiates as the school year gets properly under way. It should be obvious now why this may be our last recording. We’re going to be so busy training and attending school and living our lives, I doubt we’ll have time or reason to send out anymore audio pleas for help. We’ll put this tape in a secure box and send it along to the chap who’s been transcribing our adventures. Carter seems to think the postal service will do, but I think I’ll give it to Khufu to carry through the Duat. What could possibly go wrong? As for us, don’t think our lives will be all fun and games. Amos couldn’t leave a mob of teens unsupervised, and as we don’t have Bast anymore, Amos has sent a few adult magicians to Brooklyn House as teachers (read: chaperones). But we all know who’s really in charge- me . Oh, yes, and perhaps Carter a little bit. We’re not done with trouble, either. I’m still worried about that murderous ghost Setne, who’s on the loose in this world with his devious mind, horrible fashion sense, and the Book of Thoth. I’m also puzzling over my mother’s comments about rival magic and other gods. No idea what that means, but it doesn’t sound good. I am still in a daze. The ending of this book is a total blast! Up till now I was still under Rick Riordan’s magic he casted on this book. The Mark I am still in a daze. The ending of this book is a total blast! Up till now I was still under Rick Riordan’s magic he casted on this book. The Mark of Athena definitely exceeds my expectations! It’s more action packed, bolder and totally beats all of the past books! It is just that amazing. (view spoiler)[ Plot Summary: The Mark of Athena started where The Son of Neptune left it. Annabeth, Leo, Jason, Piper and Coach Hedge finally reached Camp Jupiter with Argo II. Annabeth couldn’t wait to get reunited with Percy with dozens of ‘what if’ questions in her mind. They came in peace and unfortunately, due to possessing spirits called eidolons, one of these four demigods attacked New Rome. This enraged the Romans and disasters happened. They left Camp Jupiter as soon as possible now with Percy, Hazel and Frank. Jason and Piper were injured because of this. Due to the sudden ‘war’, the Argo II is damaged and they needed Celestial Bronze and Tar. Frank, Percy and Annabeth went to find the Tar while Hazel and Leo got the Celestial Bronze. Hazel and Leo encountered Nemesis, the goddess of revenge and she helped them, giving Leo a fortune cookie that he should only open in desperate times and should remember that there’s a prize. She also told him that he would be the seventh wheel and told them that they could find Celestial Bronze to a cursed boy and they should get it before sunset for the boy gets angry when dark comes. Leo and Hazel met Echo and realized that the cursed boy is Narcissus. With Hazel’s amazing skill with controlling metals and Leo’s great idea of pretending to be hotter and more amazing than Narcissus, they got the Celestial Bronze but were chased by dozens of nymphs. After Leo repaired the Argo II and after they had deduced some things from the two prophecies, they don’t know where to go next. Piper remembered her vision in her katoptris: a strange man in purple, holding a goblet and standing in front of a sign that read TOPEKA 32. She told them about this and they went to Kansas. With Percy and Jason, Piper got to TOPEKA 32 with the help of Blackjack and Tempest. They had a talk with Bacchus and Piper realized the god was part of their quest and he should help them. Bacchus declined saying they should offer an impossible tribute to him before he’ll help them. Ceres didn’t come on their rendezvous, thus, Bacchus assumed it’s a trap and disappeared. Piper, Jason and Percy were about to leave when Gaea appeared and the eidolons were back. Piper used her charmspeaking skills to drive the spirits off Jason and Percy to stop them from fighting each other. Jason went unconscious and Blackjack threw Percy out of him and he got unconscious as well. With the help of Blackjack, they brought the two boys back at Argo II. Piper explained to everyone what happened and they exchanged stories. There’s this uneasiness feeling in Piper that made her think that there were still eidolons. The three eidolons possessed three of the seven demigods but with Piper’s charmspeaking skills, she made the eidolons swore on the River Styx never to possess anyone on that room. That night, Percy had demigod dreams where we learned more about Ephialtes and Otis, the twin giants and also where Nico was being held as captive (view spoiler)[ and bait. (hide spoiler)] He woke up with the sound of Annabeth’s voice and they went to the stables to have some quality time where they learned more and more about each other. The next morning, Frank saw them cuddled together and instantly assumed that something happened. Coach Hedge grounded Annabeth to never go with Percy alone ever again. Percy, Frank and Coach Hedge went to Georgia Aquarium to find Phorcys, an ancient Greek sea god. Which they found in Georgia and they'll face a lot of danger. Throughout the quest, they encounter more mythological characters and face a lot of challenges especially on Annabeth's part. Especially that Annabeth shall face the original Arachne herself and the ending is the most heartbreaking of all. Annabeth sprained her ankle and when Arachne fell on the pit of Tartarus, all of her silky web followed her. Unfortunately, a string of web caught Annabeth's sprained ankle and was slowly falling to the edge and to the pit. Everyone was busy carrying the 40 ft tall statue of Athena (which is The Mark of Athena) and didn't notice Annabeth. But Percy did. He quickly came to her rescue. He caught her hand in time and because of the pressure, Percy is also slowly going to the edge of Tartarus. Annabeth was crying and pleading Percy to let go but Percy doesn't want to. The only thing that supports them now was Percy's free hand holding on the edge. Hazel saw them and was screaming. Everyone finally notice it but the task was still at hand. It was already too late. Percy, still holding Annabeth's hand, let go of the rock and together they fell on the endless dark pit of Tartarus. (hide spoiler)] What I Love: [_] The plot. It is full of action, adventure, suspense that’ll give you a hard time to stop. I love how each scene is intense and gives the reader one message: Gaea is very very dangerous. [_] The characters. I love how each of the chosen seven demigods’ personalities affect the story and some gives color to it. And some are characters whom I admire for the thing they did that only brave people can do. Percy is still well, the Percy we know. He’s still loyal and in love with Annabeth. He also grew smarter than before especially on Chapter 31. *covers mouth to stop from laughing* Anyway, I admire him for what he did on the ending. Annabeth is still wise, cautious and in love with Percy. (view spoiler)[ I laughed when she judo-flipped Percy the moment she saw him. (hide spoiler)] She’s also very brave because of what she did just to get The Mark of Athena whom Romans stole from Greeks (view spoiler)[ and also made Athena quite mad. (hide spoiler)] Piper is still the same: beautiful, helpful with her charmspeaking skills and still obsessed with Jason. She’s pretty annoying. Jason here, Jason there, Jason everywhere! I dislike it that whenever Jason wakes up, Piper always asks if he still remember her. Paranoid much Piper? But, she’s also brave to face the eidolons herself (view spoiler)[ she’s the only one who can control them. (hide spoiler)] Jason is still brave and powerful with the lightning and wind summoning ability. Though, to be truthful, he didn’t do much but to get unconscious when there’s an adventure and Piper always saves him. Poor guy. Frank is a brave and caring person towards Hazel. I dislike how he’s too jealous about Leo being a look-a-like of Sammy, Hazel’s old lover. Due to this jealousy, he’s mean and rude towards Leo who was confused why he was acting that way towards him at first. Goodness Frank, you’re Hazel’s current boyfriend. You shouldn’t worry too much. That’s a sign of insecurity. Hazel is still nice, kind and brave. She also tries her best to stop Frank from doing anything to Leo throughout the quest. She was well aware of Frank’s jealousy and Leo’s confusion towards the matter. I also admire her for always staying strong, never letting her past get in the way but as a way to achieve her goals. Leo is still the same Leo every fan loved. He’s still very hilarious, smart and great in building things. He’s the only character which makes this book more interesting with his corny but sometimes funny jokes and remarks. He totally lights up the mood not only to his fellow demigods but to the readers as well. Here’s my favorite very hilarious Leo part: (view spoiler)[ Leo took a deep breath. He strutted back toward the pond hoping he looked awesome and not like he had some sort of nervous affliction. “Leo is the coolest!” he shouted. “Leo is the coolest!” Echo shouted back. “Yeah, baby, check me out!” “Check me out!” Echo said. “Make way for the king!” “The king!” “Narcissus is weak!” “Weak!” The crowd of nymphs scattered in surprise. Leo shooed them away as if they were bothering him. “No authographs, girls. I know you want some Leo time, but I’mw ay too cool. You better just hang around that ugly dweeb Narcissus. He’s lame!” “Lame!” Echo said with enthusiasm. The nymphs muttered angrily. Leo adjusted his goggles and smiled. He flexed his biceps, though he didn’t have much to flex, and showed off his HOT STUFF tattoo. He had the nymphs’ attention, if only because they were stunned; but Narcissus was still fixed on his reflection. “You know how ugly Narcissus is?” Leo asked the crowd. “He’s so ugly, when he was born his mama thought he was a backward centaur-with a horse butt for a face.” Some of the nymphs gasped. Narcissus frowned, as though he was vaguely aware of a gnat buzzing around his head. “You know why his bow had cobwebs?” Leo continued. “He uses it to hunt for dates, but he can’t find one!” One of the nymphs laughed. The others quickly elbowed her into silence. Narcissus turned and scowled at Leo. “Who are you?” “I’m the Super-sized McShizzle, man!” Leo said. “I’m Leo Valdez, bad boy supreme. And the ladies love a bad boy.” “Love a bad boy!” Echo said, with a convincing squeal. Leo took out a pen and autographed the arm of one of the nymphs. “Narcissus is a loser! He’s so weak, he can’t bench-press a Kleenex. He’s so lame when you look up lame on Wikipedia, it’s got a picture of Narcissus-only the picture is so ugly , no one ever checks it out.” Narcissus knit his handsome eyebrows. His face was turning from bronze to salmon pink. For the moment, he’d totally forgotten about the pond, and Leo could see the sheet of bronze sinking into the sand. “What are you talking about?” Narcissus demanded. “I am amazing. Everyone knows this.” “Amazing at pure suck ,” Leo said. “If I was as suck as you, I’d drown myself. Oh wait, you already did that.” Another nymph giggled. Then another. Narcissus growled, which did make him look a little less handsome. Meanwhile Leo beamed and wiggled his eyebrows over his goggles and spread his hands, gesturing for applause. “That’s right!” he said. “Team Leo for the win!” “Team Leo for the win!” Echo shouted. She’d wriggled into the mob of nymphs, and because she was so hard to see, the nymphs apparently thought the voice came from one of their own. “Oh my god, I am so awesome!” Leo bellowed. “So awesome!” Echo yelled back. “He is funny,” a nymph ventured. “And cute, in a scrawny way,” another said. “Scrawny?” Leo asked. “Baby, I invented scrawny. Scrawny is the new sizzling hot . And I GOT the scrawny. Narcissus? He’s such a loser even the Underworld didn’t want him. He couldn’t get the ghost girls to date him.” “Eww,” said a nymph. “Eww!” Echo agreed. (hide spoiler)] Isn’t that hilarious? *tries hard not to laugh* Reyna is my favorite character of all even if she’s just a supporting character. I admire how she is so brave, strong and a great leader. She doesn’t show much expression just to assure everyone there’s nothing to worry about no matter how big the problem is. She always show that she is very strong and no obstacle will stop her in reaching her goal even if sometimes she is hurting inside. She makes sure the safety and needs of everyone and ignores her own safety and needs.(view spoiler)[ An example of this: Reyna, even if her feelings were hurt when she saw Jason and Piper holding hands, she still showed her poker face and welcomed them warmly to New Rome. Only few people can do that, to hide their true feelings. Compared to Piper whose mind was only focused to one person, Jason, she is a bunch better than her. But still, I love Jason and Piper and dislike Jayson and Reyna. (hide spoiler)] That, my friend, are the personalities a great leader has. And Reyna has it all. She’s truly a queen. I hope Mr. Rick won’t leave her hanging (meaning doesn’t have a partner). [_] Writing style. I love how Rick Riordan describes everything from sceneries, characters and especially the action and adventure scenes that make this book a whole lot of better than them all. (view spoiler)[ Just take a look of this: The sky was brilliant blue, as if the stormy weather had never happened. The sun rose over the distant hills, so everything below them shone and sparkled like the entire city of Rome had just come out of the car wash. (hide spoiler)] [_] The cover. It is just plain gorgeous! I love how the owl was at the background and Jason and Percy, swords drawn while riding on their horse (Tempest and Blackjack) with thunder, lightning behind Jason (signifying his power as a son of Zeus) and waves of water behind Percy (signifying his power as a son of Poseidon) are about to clash. (view spoiler)[ The owl at the background is the sacred animal of Athena and it somewhat guided Annabeth on her path to get The Mark of Athena. Jason and Percy fighting was one of the signs that Gaea can do everything, even turning comrades to fight each other. (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[ [_] Chapter 22. This chapter is my favorite of all. I love how it’s very emotional that’ll bring tears in your eyes for how legendary Hazel and Sammy’s love is. Frank should really be jealous! I cried in this chapter, grieving over a love that should have happened, but didn’t, thanks to Queen Marie’s selfish reasons and Gaea’s manipulation. I grieve for the life Hazel should’ve had if they didn’t go to Alaska. R.I.P. Sammy. :’( (hide spoiler)] What I Dislike: [_] Except for the fact Piper is pretty annoying with her obsession over Jason, how Frank’s jealousy towards Leo affects almost everything, how cliffhanger the ending is and for the mere fact (view spoiler)[ (view spoiler)[ Percy and Annabeth holding hands fell on the endless pit of Tartarus (hide spoiler)] (hide spoiler)] and up till now Leo and Reyna, my two favorite characters still doesn’t have a partner? Well, that’s all I dislike about it. [_] Writing style. 90% of it is very admirable that’s why I added it to the things I love. But I want to tell you about the other 10%. I dislike for the fact Mr. Rick Riordan leaves us hanging on air with his cliffhanger endings. Really, Mr. Rick, you’re now fond of cliffhangers? First The Lost Hero, where he left us wondering what happened to Percy on Camp Jupiter. Second The Son of Neptune, where he left us the exact moment Argo II is coming and Percy and the other Romans waiting for the Greeks. And now, even on Mark of Athena? I won’t be surprised if the ending of House of Hades is also a cliffhanger. Goodness… Conclusion: The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan is an outrageous sequel for The Son of Neptune and The Lost Hero. It’s full of action, adventure and many encounters of characters from both Greek and Roman mythologies. We’ll also know more about each individual and understand why they’re acting that way. Some mysteries and secrets would be answered but not all. Even if Piper’s obsession over Jason is annoying and the most annoying of all is the cliffhanger ending, I give this book five stars. A MUST READ! ...more |

Plot Summary: Liesl is just an ordinary girl that was locked by her stepmother to the attic. She was alone and lonely, with no friends to talk with. After her father’s death; Po, a ghost from the ‘Other Side’ with its pet, Bundle visited her. Liesl and Po found happiness and comfort with each other for they were like the other- alone, lonely with no friends. Will is an alchemist’s apprentice that always goes through Highway Avenue to catch a sight of a heart shaped girl up on the attic through the window (view spoiler)[ (which revealed she was Liesl) (hide spoiler)], to whom he developed feelings for. That same night, he was bringing a wooden box containing the most powerful magic in the whole universe that took the alchemist five years to complete. He was going to deliver it to Lady Premiere, a rich and native princess. After that, he’ll proceed to Mr. Gray to get some supplies he’ll deliver to the alchemist. Because of the idea of saving time, he accidentally mixed the wooden box of Liesl’s father ashes to that of the box that was containing the most powerful magic. Too many mistakes and accidents happened, and Will’s mistake was just only the beginning. After the switch of the wooden boxes, Will ran away and to the Gainsville. Liesl, with the mission to bury her father’s ashes beside her mother’s, got away from her prison and travelled on her own. The two children’s paths crossed and they decided to help each other since they were both orphans and alone. After going through a lot of obstacles and another dozens mistakes and also discovering the whole truth about Liesl’s father’s death; Liesl, Po, Bundle and Will go to the Red House and accomplished their mission- to bury Liesl’s father’s ashes beside her mother’s. They had saved not only Liesl’s father’s soul, the whole country but they had also saved Po and he with Bundle can no go to Beyond and rest in peace. Since then the sun always shines to their country and the dark days were over and replaced by a new beginning. What I love about this book: -The plot! Isn’t it just so amazing and touching? So so GREAT! It is simply adorable. It is child friendly, no profanity, great story and a moral lesson on the end. Everything I love is already in this book! -The characters! They’re so realistic! The antagonists are really hateful and the main characters are admirable! I really like Will! I said in a YouTube comment when I watched the official book trailer of this, “And I got this feeling I’d like Will! XD” . And now that I’m done reading it, I do like Will! He is just so sweet! He even planned to do everything to save Liesl! Isn’t that so cute? **squeals** -The ending! And yes, it shouldn’t be included on ‘The plot’ for it’s just so brilliant! I cried when I saw how much the world changed after the alchemist casted the most powerful spell in the whole universe. And Po, oh goodness, don’t even get me start with him or else I’ll burst into tears! But I’m still glad he finally found the reason to leave the world, to do a good thing to a person which is Liesl and now he had finished his mission, he can now go to Beyond where I think is Heaven in my religion. R.I.P. Po and Bundle. :’( -Writing Style. I love Lauren Oliver’s writing style, it was just so astounding! The story really goes smoothly like a calm river going to the waterfalls. -The cover! Just look at that! JUST LOOK AT THAT! A beautiful heart shaped girl opening a box full of wonders and the designs beside the picture… So mesmerizing! I wish a copy of this book is available in the Philippines. **sighs** Now that’s I call a great book cover! Authors should really consider thinking of a great book cover like this one. **points on the book cover of Liesl and Po by Lauren Oliver** Very idealistic. -The Summary Description at the back of the book! It is a great plot summary that catches every reader’s attention. It’s not boring that’ll make you think: Boring, next book please. Nor too descriptive like Too spoilerish, it eventually told the whole story! Why would I even bother to read the book if I already know the story? . It is descriptive, yes, but not too much. It’s more of a This sounds really interesting! I should check this out! -The illustrations! Kudos to the illustrator of this book! It also catches my eye and had a really fun time reading it at the same time admiring the pictures. Usually I prefer books that doesn’t have pictures and now I tried reading one, it wasn’t that bad like I thought it was before. -The setting! I have only read a few books that are set around the Victorian era in London or somewhere in England or United Kingdom. This is my second book which has this kind of setting (the first one is The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare). Most of the YA or Children’s book nowadays focus on dystopian or futuristic kind of world like The Hunger Games, Divergent and Delirium. What I dislike about this book: -Surprisingly, I didn’t find anything I dislike about this book. I am an easy-to-please kind of person. For me, Liesl and Po by Lauren Oliver is amazing enough that I don’t dislike anything about it. Opinions At first, I don’t want to read it since it includes a ghost for I dislike horror movies and things related to it. Even if I dislike ghosts, I managed to set that dislike aside and try this one and I must say I’m glad I did. Even if it does include ghosts, it is only a minor one and they’re good ghosts that don’t pop out of nowhere to scare the heck out of people that’ll make them scream in surprise and hunt whoever saw it down. **shivers at what she just said** It is inspiring for it is one of those books that have this message: Don’t give up, keep moving forward and don’t lose hope. A new day will always come and so is a new beginning to start with. Or it could be: After the rain, there’ll always be a rainbow. And at the end of the rainbow, there’ll always be a pot of gold. Another great message the book would like to say is: Each and every one of us has their own purpose in this world. We’re born to do something, to be instruments of God. Po became the instrument to help Liesl finish her mission, saving his soul in the process. The alchemist became the instrument to end the dark days all over their country- for the sun to shine bright and come out of the clouds. Over all, I really recommend Liesl and Po by Lauren Oliver to those readers who’d like to read a really great children’s book. And I rate this book 5 stars. MUST READ! ...more |

I can't stop myself from turning the pages! It is very thrilling with suspense and action! Really Amy? Ian, Evan and now Jake? I guess Amy has this charisma that always attract handsome guys! XD I totally recommend this! I can't wait to read the next one! And up till now, I still can't believe that Arthur Josiah Trent is, *gulps* (view spoiler)[ is Vesper One. (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[ Here's an excerpt from the book to prove that Arthur Josiah Trent REALLY is (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[ (view spoiler)[ Vesper One! "Dan, what are you doing?" Amy's voice suddenly called from the doorway. Dan jumped. "Come on in, the door's open, thanks for knocking." "I wanted to talk about Jake," she said softly. "Oh, great," Dan grumbled. "Mr. Congeniality." "He's so angry all the time. I can't bring myself to show him the text from..." Amy's eyes locked on the phone, resting on the carpet. Its screen glowed with a text from AJT. She sighed. Dan scowled. "Here comes the lecture." She sat on the floor next to him. "Dan, Dad was a Cahill. Through and through. Even if he wasn't born one. I wish you could remember his eyes. When you were little, he'd hold you up to everyone and say-" "'Moon face,' yeah, I know, you told me a billion times," Dan said. "You both would flash this big, identical grin," Amy said. "Mom said you were twins separated by a generation. The man wasn't capable of evil. His life was not a lie. If you really knew him, you'd never say the names Vesper and Arthur Trent in the same breath." Here's another one! THE LAST SCENE FROM THE BOOK THAT I'LL NEVER FORGET! Overhead, a news report blared on an airport TV monitor. There was a report about a father and a little boy finding each other after a tornado. They were grinning, and they looked so much like each other. Like twins, separated by a generation... Amy's words echoed in his brain. When you were little, he'd hold you up to everyone and say, 'Moon face!' You both would flash this big, identical grin. Dan sat bolt upright. Of course. He could settle the AJT problem once and for all. Why hadn't he thought of this before? No stranger could possibly know that fact. He checked left and right, then opened the phone again. This time he composed a message and sent it right away: If you're really my dad, can you tell me what special thing you said to make us smile together? The answer came back far faster than he would have expected. Moon face. (hide spoiler)] (hide spoiler)] ...more |

This is one of my favorite books ever! It is full of adventure, suspense and thriller! I totally recommend everyone to read this! Such a masterpiece! Totally worth buying! You can see how faithful and loyal Evan is to Amy, how Dan and Atticus value their friendship and many others! But the last sentence on the book is totally striking. (Warning! Spoiler!) Who would've thought that Amy and Dan's father was alive all this time, eh? Not to mention he's one of the Vespers! There's also a high possibility he's Vesper One or the Vesper spymaster! I don't say that he is. It's just a wise guess. Anyway, I can't wait for the third book on the "Cahills vs Vespers" series! ...more |
