I truly recommend this entertaining mystery by Mary Stewart! What I liked best:
1. Mary Stewart's descriptive prose transported me to yet another exotic locale;
2. The snappy banter between hero and heroine;
3. The heroine, Christy, exhibits true grit;
4. All of the animals made it safely to end of the story;
5. Since I grew up in the 1960's, I had the added bonus of enjoying no small amount of nostalgia
while reading this story. I remember wearing dresses like the one Christy is wearing on
the cover of my book! I still love peasant style blouses and dresses!

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree! She is the queen of retro suspense/romance! I find it very difficult to put her books down, but sometimes life gets in the way!!
"Peasant style blouses and dresses" --- You ancient hippie, you!!! (I think I still have some of those in one of my cedar chests from my childhood bedroom. I haven't looked in there in ages! It's probably like a time warp from the 60s and 70s!!)
Hahaha! I really enjoyed reading this book but you could say that I had my cake and ate it too!! I had forgotten about some of my favorite dresses until I picked up this book! I guess I have a soft spot for "oldies but goodies"!! Lol!!
I do think the nostalgia is one of the loveliest elements in reading Mary Stewart. I also love that fashion, and I don't think anyone who lived then can forget how very feminine we felt in those flowing dresses that swished whenever you turned. ((sigh))
It's really incredible how something as simple as reading a book can prompt your memory! I didn't want to read this book too quickly because I was enjoying a link to my past!! My mother used to sew dresses for me and my sister. We would go shopping for those old Simplicity and McCalls's patterns!!! Good times!!!
I can remember specific dresses, Lori, and my aunt would make me and my sister matching ones, different colors, from the same pattern. economy. One of the few times you got new dresses was when school was about to start up and I can remember as a teenager going shopping for school clothes and running into my friends doing the same.
