The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

I have long enjoyed Malcolm Gladwell's pieces in The New Yorker, and am a little abashed that it took me this long to get around to reading this book. In my world, there are two kinds of people: the people who brainstorm, and people who don't.
The brainstormers will love this book, because Gladwell is particularly adept at recognizing patterns in society, and bringing them together in an interesting way. Much of what he says rings true to my personal experience, which is why I keep reading his writing.
The non-brain stormers may criticize a dearth of hard data, but I do not find this to be a problem. Much of what Gladwell talks about is pure common sense, and how does one quantify that? His argument about causes of the increase in teenage smoking were particularly cogent. I also enjoyed the section on Sesame Street and Blues Clues, and his analysis of the "treasure box" advertising.
I enjoyed this book immensely. Power to the brainstormers!

Interesting -- I, too, always enjoy Malcolm Gladwell, and haven't "gotten around to" reading his stuff! I wonder why. It hasn't really occurred to me. But now my son read it -- rated it 5 stars, too -- and is following it with Blink, and between your review and his rating, it's going to have to go up a notch on my to-read list. Thanks for the review.

That's me she's talking about. Now you'll remember me forever, because I have the quality of stickiness.
Jacob, I haven't read the book yet, so I think I will have to wait until I've read it to interpret the "stickiness" bit. And are you the brainstormer, or the non-brain stormer? I assume the former. And Maureen, in case you see this exchange, Jacob is the son who encouraged me to read both Blink and The Tipping Point.
Sandra, you will enjoy Gladwell. We should always pay attention to our "sticky" children's book recommendations: mine have always been enjoyable!

Ha! If I EVER finish Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson! You're my only Goodreads friend who has read it, so I'm sure you appreciate what I'm saying. I'm enjoying it, but it's quite an undertaking. And I like the way G.I. himself says to read it THREE times! But yes, if I ever finish it, maybe I'll pick up some Gladwell. I'm sure the contrast will be noticeable!
