What an awesome book to listen to on a very long car trip! The narrator was incredible. He was able to change up voices and input just the right amount of pomposity into Bartimeus' character to make him both believable and humorous. For those looking for a book in a similar vein to the Harry Potter series, this story of a young apprentice magician is a must read. I would recommend the audio version to children ages 9+. The parents in the car enjoyed the story, too.

Hey, glad you liked it! I have fond memories of this and the second book (I think). Glad your son enjoyed it.

I'm reading the physical book. He has this strange writing style where he uses footnotes ALL the time, on almost every page. I am wondering how he handled this in the audio book. I am pre-reading to decide if I want to read this to my kids but I cannot imagine how I would read that aloud. The premise is interesting but I'm not sure my kids could follow it. How old were your kids when they listened to it?
My kids were 11 and 14 when we listened to it on a road trip. My youngest convinced me to buy the book so he could follow along. They loved it - I would imagine it would be appropriate for those who are able to follow the first Harry Potter book. The audio is really well done and probably the way to go. Did you sign up for sync audio's summer book free downloads yet? I've learned to download all the books because there's always a real gem that I have never heard of.
Thanks I will have to check out audio summer book thing out. My kids love to listen to audio books before bed and my oldest is getting tired of the Dr. Suess, Robert Munsch, Martine and Pinkalicious stories we have so far.
Have you tried Jacob Two Two and the Hooded Fang? It's a full cast CBC production and I swear there were never any kids in the car when that was playing. It may be a little scary for really young kids but Jacob Two Two is 6 years old and kind of cool.
I see the books series on goodreads. I will see if I can find some of them to read. Thanks for the tip. The sync line up for this summer looks interesting.

No, we bought it years ago when the kids were little.

My wife and I got this as a surprise years ago, right before we left on a long road trip from Wisconsin to California and back. We LOVED the narration. I had to be bite my lip while driving, at times, because I was laughing so hard I would have lost control of the steering wheel if I wasn't careful.

I think my husband had the same reaction. My reluctant reader son - kid3 - made us buy the book for him so he could follow along.
