~ Quick Summary ~

Its midnight and Jen watches her son arrive home, only to see him murder someone. The next day, Jen wakes up and the date is one day before the murder and she keeps on travelling back where she figures out the events that led up to that night.

~ Pick this up if you enjoy/don’t mind the following ~

⌚ Time travel.

🤯 Suspend belief. There is no explanation on Jen’s time travel.

🐢 Uneven pace, can feel a very slow at times. The start is exciting and then it slows down till about half way.

🏃‍♀️ Excellent reveals and twists.

👪 Explores Jen’s relationship with Kelly and her son and her reflection as a parent.

~ What I Enjoyed ~

I did not see any of the reveals or twists coming!

~ What I didn’t enjoy ~

This is one of those books that is between a drama/fiction and a mystery thriller. There were too many dull and everyday moments, I skimmed quite a lot.
Each day there was a small discovery but there was nothing substantial to really hook me in. My interest didn’t pique until ~45% mark where there was a pretty big reveal. But in between the reveals it felt so slow and there was no sense of urgency or much tension.

Some really weird moments: (view spoiler)

Parts I don’t fully understand: (view spoiler)

Carmen Books with a lot of dull everyday moments can be hard to get through! Hope your next read is more exciting!

message 2: by Ellie (new)

Ellie Spencer (catching up from hiatus) I do love an unexpected twist so much, but I think I would struggle with the pace in particular! Wonderful review Joanna! 🧡

Kelly Agree.

message 4: by Martin (new)

Martin I usually love 'time travel" books and movies (if you haven't seen it check out "Time After Time" with Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen or "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" to name two.) But I think I'll pass on this book thanks to your warning!

Yun Great review, Joanna! Bummer this wasn't as exciting as you were hoping for. Still, glad the twists surprised you! :)

Joanna Chu (The ChuseyReader) @Carmen - Yes this one did drag a little. Thank you! I'm now reading a more action packed legal thriller :D

Joanna Chu (The ChuseyReader) @Ellie - If you don't mind a slower pace then this could be a winner for you! I was expecting something a bit more exciting.

Joanna Chu (The ChuseyReader) @Kelly - Thanks for sharing, I'm so glad I'm not the only one!!!

Joanna Chu (The ChuseyReader) @Martin - I love time travel books and movies too, they're soooo interesting! But this one was a bit slow for me. Thanks for the recommendations!

Joanna Chu (The ChuseyReader) @Yun - Its hard to find books with surprising twists so this one got me!

Neha Hey! I just finished this book and though it was an interesting read for me, i was plagued by the same thoughts as you. Why did Ryan stay as Kelly when Joseph is in jail? He could've just told Jen his real identity.

This is more incomprehensible when you discover that he stayed as Ryan in the end..same circumstances AND joseph is not even in jail.

Joanna Chu (The ChuseyReader) @Neha - I'm glad you enjoyed this one! I'm also glad that I'm not the only one with these thoughts/questions!! There just wasn't enough justification for Ryan's actions...

message 13: by Kara (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kara Yes there were some parts that didn’t make a ton of sense and I was cringing at how often she referenced his dark dry humor with lines that weren’t dark or dry and were barely humorous but I did like how things kind of came together at the very last plot twist

Joanna Chu (The ChuseyReader) Oh ok I didn't notice that, maybe I was skimming already haha.

Yeah I thought the ending was not bad!

Holly B (slower pace!) Could have been much better.

Stephanie Lorenzo Agreed! Looking back, Todd being embarrassed instead of worried for his mom when she showed up at the house with Ezra and Joseph makes no sense. Another thing I didn’t understand, why after he kills Joseph does he seem like he doesn’t even care what he just did. If you were doing that to protect your dad wouldn’t you still be traumatized, cry, scream, some type of emotion. I get it’s to throw the reader off, but…it makes no sense.

Joanna Chu (The ChuseyReader) @Stephanie - Agreed! I get that the author didn't want to give things away...but looking back it just doesn't make sense.

Rachel Tolle I enjoyed this book but still have so many questions. Why did they keep baby Eve and then just raise her under the name Clio so close to where her actual family was? Did Joseph find out the true identity of Kelly and then Todd found out and that’s why he stabbed him? I also feel like Kelly/Ryan could have made so many different decisions that allowed him to be with Jen but didn’t force him to remain undercover and under threat of being found out

Joanna Chu (The ChuseyReader) @Rachel - Agreed! I had so many questions as well!! (view spoiler)

Leah Maybe because I read this books sporadically but I don’t understand the ending at all.

Joanna Chu (The ChuseyReader) @Leah - It has been too long since I read this so I don't even remember the ending. Looking back at my review I do remember raising an eyebrow!
