A rider without their dragon is dead.

i knew i would love this omfg. the amount of five star reviews i kept seeing with everyone fangirling, i knew i would devour this book. and i did. this might be my favourite read of the year, so far. i haven't read a book this consuming and enjoyable in months.

i need this book to be tattooed onto my soul pls and ty . this book was so addicting. i kept reading and reading and it kept giving and giving. i loved everything about the book. the world-building, the characters, the dragons, the plot, the action, the trials, the tension, the romance. the way this book gives such divergent and hunger games vibes is immaculate.


violet

"you're a far cry from the trembling girl who stood up in the courtyard and tried to mask her fear after parapet. i approve."

violet. is. such. a. badass. it's been a long time since i've read about a fmc that isn't weak and fragile. violet is powerful, strong-minded, admirable, relatable, confident and intelligent. she was so determined to get stronger and become a better dragon rider. i loved her character growth so much, it was so rewarding to see her become stronger, and overall better. she didn't give up on herself and kept pushing herself to the best of her ability. she wasn't a pushover, which is so fulfilling to me because it's very rare that i see a fmc stand up for themselves.

violet is very inspiring, she'd be such a great leader. the fact that she isn't afraid to speak her mind and own her feelings is breath of fresh air. she had loads of amazing and supportive friends that would defend her in a heartbeat.

xaden, you are one fine ass, charming, sarcastic, strong, mysterious, cocky bastard. look, i do love him, okay? but i also kinda don't? he is such a great wingleader, he always said the right things and helped as many people as he could, even if it doesn't seem like it. he was very encouraging and deep down kind hearted. i loved that he would push vi to do her best instead of baby her, like dain did with all the "you don't have to use your powers if you don't want to" bullshit. also, when i tell you the phrase, actions speak louder than words, it's true!! the little things he did for vi had me head over heels. but i just couldn’t connect to him.


vi & xaden

"i don't deserve you." his arm curls around my hips and he hugs me closer. "but i'm going to keep you all the same."

i love them so much together. the tension had me giggling and kicking my feet. the chemistry was chefs kiss. they're are so perfect for one another, they just get each other. the build up was so good i was on the edge. but as much as i love them, i do have to say their love was a bit sudden. i mean they were training on the mat one second and then the next she says she loves him? it was a bit too quick for me. throughout the 70% there was sexual tension, obviously, but that was it. whoever said this was enemies to lovers, you are a bit fat liar. it's one of those "i loved you the whole time" enemies to lovers. like no ma'am i was expecting REAL enemies to lovers. lowkey jack had potential in the beginning but then i hated him.


tairn & andarna

the best part of the whole book was violet and tairn's relationship. their banter is unmatchable, they are so hilarious together, i was historically laughing ever single page. the sarcastic comments they both made to each other was so amusing.

tairn's golden eyes are narrowed in a glare on dain, and his teeth are bared, dripping saliva as another growl rumbles.
"you're a menace. stop it." i say.
"tell him if he harms you, i'll scorch the ground where he stands."
"oh, for fuck's sake, tairn."

tairn, gosh i need him so bad. he was so protective, nonchalant, entertaining, charismatic, scary and powerful. he gives off the vibe "touch her and i'll kill you scorch you into flames" the amount of times tairn had me giggling, squealing, blushing, laughing and swooning is so questionable. i don't need A tairn, i need TAIRN. he can get it 😩 screaming crying wishing i was sgaeyl rn. i know he fucks good, okay? as fine as he is, i've got to say that i'm in love with his personality <3 especially when he was so protective of violet and got so defensive whenever someone touched her. he also didn't give up on her. i ache for him. the nickname "silver one" will never not make me go dizzy.

also, when he made an appearance?? I WAS SO FLABBERGASTED. JAW ON THE FLOOR. DOING LAPS AROUND MY HOUSE. LOOKING AROUND MY ROOM CLUELESSLY. WHEN HE SPOKE TO HER IN HER MIND? I WAS SO HYPED. THE ADRENALINE KICKED IN. it was the best part of the book and no one can tell me otherwise.

andarna was so cute and precious, we must protect her at all costs 🥺💘 she always reassured violet and asked her if she was okay. she's just so pure and adorable, i want to give her a hug <33

↳ first of all, what the fuck was that ending? i was gobsmacked. brennan's been alive this whole time? it was so unexpected because the whole trying to heal his partner was so believable and realistic. how is he alive? i need the next book like i need air.

↳ so i got spoiled for liam's death but that didn't stop me from shedding a few tears. why did he have to die ffs 😭 literally one of the best characters and you just killed him off.

↳ dain is such a lil pussy ass bitch. how dare you. why are you alive and liam isn't. why do you even exist fr. when he said "i'll miss you, violet" and hugged her before she left… fuming. that’s all.

↳ jack was such an annoying, irrelevant prick. when he started running away bc violet stabbed his arm 😭

overall, i loved this book with my whole heart. i will definitely be rereading this before the next book comes out, or even before that. and i have 241 highlights!! if that doesn't convince you alone then sigh. i'll miss you daddy tairn <3
