Anne fans, I INSIST that you try Emily at some point.

-----------------------------------

I love the Emily books so much. Her passion and her dreams, along with her dignity, were expressed in a way that really appealed to me when I read them as an impressionable teenager. The formative years of every girl's life are filled with wild hopes and worries and exhilaration, and as an adult, I re-read this series with a great deal of fondness.

I also love Teddy Kent. Such a romantic character, and how lovely to have your childhood friend be the love of your life!

Some of the anecdotes, like many of L.M. Montgomery's, do cross over into exaggerated predicaments and a wee bit of melodrama...but honestly, that's part of the fun of indulging in books like these.

It had always seemed to Emily, ever since she could remember, that she was very, very near to a world of wonderful beauty. Between it and herself hung only a thin curtain; she could never draw the curtain aside-- but sometimes, just for a moment, a wind fluttered it and then it was as if she caught a glimpse of the enchanting realm beyond-- only a glimpse-- and heard a note of unearthly music.

ETA/content warning: (for the series as a whole) Adult readers will certainly recognize severely problematic behaviors from Dean Priest, one of Emily's mentors when she's a little older. When I read the books as a child, I thought his later romantic attentions towards her were a little creepy, but mostly because OBVIOUSLY SHE IS MEANT TO BE WITH TEDDY. I was more bothered by his infuriating betrayal of her trust as far as her writing was concerned, and recognized that the age difference and time period play into his pursuit of her. Still, he exhibits controlling, possessive, manipulative behavior, and the power dynamics are terrible, even as mature and independent as Emily is. It's not brutally or aggressively controlling, but manipulation—and grooming—are there all the same.

Skylar Burris What age group is this geared toward? Would Shiloh be too young to understand it if I read it aloud? I read aloud a lot of Roald Dahl and C.S. Lewis and she follows that pretty well.

Amy Gourley Skylar, I think Emily might be ok to read to Shiloh. I love L.M. Montgomery book but it's been a while since I read the Emily series. I probably read them when I was 10 or 11. It's been a while since I've reread them so I can't say for sure.

Wendy Darling Shiloh's what, six? The books are pre-teen through teen, so although there's nothing inappropriate about them, she may not be so interested until she's a little older. They're coming of age stories with lots of internal dialogue, with Emily learning to write and find her identity and her place in the world, rather than based on adventures like Dahl or Lewis. So you may want to save the idea for a couple of years at least.

Skylar Burris Thanks! I will save it...ah, she can read it herself then.

Ashley Huge Anne fan here - how does Emily compare? (I always give up reading Anne's story at the fourth book - it's unfortunately painful to read.) I've never read the Emily books, though perhaps I should give them a try!

Wendy Darling How funny Ashley, I usually do the same with Anne! I enjoy the earlier books much better.

The Emily books are much darker. There's more tragedy, more desperate romance. So depending on your taste..? I always say that I love Anne, but it's Emily who has my heart. Definitely worth trying if you're an LM fan!

Ashley I do like darker reads, so I think I must give Emily a try! Thanks! :)

Ginia I love the Emily series a bit more than I love the Anne series. Anne is talented and determined. Emily is 'gifted'.

QNPoohBear Emily is more realistic than Anne. Anne is such a beloved character and I just adore her but she is a bit over the top at times. Emily is more closely based on the life of the author. I especially liked how (view spoiler)

Ashley don't give up on Anne. Windy Poplars and Ingleside were written way after the rest of the series when Maud was very tired of Anne. Anne's House of Dreams is very good. Try reading about her children. I loved Rainbow Valley when I was a kid and Rilla of Ingleside is tragic and wonderful.

AquaMoon Another great L.M. Montgomery book (much lesser known than Anne and Emily): The Blue Castle

Here we have a girl who learns to stand up for herself, leave her oppressive life, and go out into the world to make her dreams come true. Sure, there's a lot of fluff and filler (I could have done without the lengthy descriptions of the seasons), but talk about strong female character! You go girl!

mrs m l calby oh this looks good only read the first anne book but loved it

The Daydreamologist Did you know that it's said that Montgomery herself experienced these flashes?

Meriammaa please where can I find it?
