I never enjoyed historic novels. When not often saturated in drab romanticism, they are realistic in an annoying way... Which is why I enjoyed this book that uses historic data just to screw the very idea of history and of reality. The clever narrative strategies push forward an apparently realistic world that is at times flooded - in a subtle but subversive way - by the strangest kinds of unnatural elements... A mesmerizing book by Agopian, a one of a kind master (at least regarding style) that could hardly be tagged - magic realism, oneirism, textualism, postmodernism, all these tags cannot accurately describe his work(s)... yes, some say Agopian sort of repeats himself with each book, but I disagree.
