The heritage of Persia by Richard N. Frye
Richard Frye was a very important pioneer in the study of Iran in North America, This book was a very valuable step towards the placing of the Iranian monarchies in perspective in World history. As someone who had only become aware of the Persians due to their part of the biographies of Alexander, and of the later Byzantine/Sassanid struggle I have always remembered this book fondly.
