What do Catholics believe? Why do they keep Sunday and not the Lord's Sabbath, even when the Catholic religion acknowledges that the Bible nowhere authorizes the observance of Sunday? Gibbons acknowledges on page 32 "But you may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday. The Scriptures enforce the religious observance of Saturday, a day we never sanctify." Read to discover why.

The Faith of our Fathers is a complete explanation of the Catholic Church and her teachings, written in a highly engaging, narrative style. Published in the late 19th century Southern US, the author is writing for an audience with a background in Episcopalianism (i.e. Anglicanism), but anyone with an interest in the basic ground rules of the religion should definitely pick it up. Whether your interest is the truth of the Church, the Papacy, the sacraments, or the role of the Virgin Mary, it's all here. Unlike many catechisms, this is not done in a question-and-answer format, but is organized thematically by chapter and told in a standard non-fiction narrative format. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn more about Catholicism, especially those with a background in liturgical Protestantism.… (more)

585. A Retrospect of Fifty Years (Vol. I), by James Cardinal Gibbons (read 29 Aug 1959) A rather benign reminiscence by the outstanding American Cardinal of his time. I never did read Volume II, so I guess that says something about Volume I?
