I read ‘Introducing Foucault’ for two reasons, one wholly superficial. Firstly, because I enjoyed ‘Society Must Be Defended’ and wanted to get an overview of Foucault’s life and other work. Secondly, because I liked the book's cover. I found it a very quick read, as it’s quite short and the text is broken up with lots of illustrative cartoons. I’m not sure how much the cartoons added to the philosophical explanations, although I was amused that Foucault looked uncannily like Spider Jerusalem. I found the book informative, but I doubt I’ll remember all the philosophical terms. (Please don’t ask me to explain what an episteme is.) I feel better informed about Foucault’s life, preoccupations, and writings, though, so as an overview it did its job.

I admire anyone who feels that they can explain Baudrillard in 175 pages of comic book!

Does this work?

Yes, on the whole, I think that it does. Nobody is going to read an introduction to this philosopher and say, "Yes, I get it."

This tome leaves me, with a muddy understanding of his thoughts , and a desire to learn more: what more can be expected on any 'Beginner's Guide'?
