About the Author
Ed McBain is a pen name for Evan Hunter who was born in 1926 in East Harlem, New York on October 15, 1926. Hunter was born with the name Salvatore Albert Lombino, and he legally adopted the name Evan Hunter in 1952. During World War II, Hunter joined the Navy and served aboard a destroyer in the show more Pacific. He graduated from Hunter College, were he majored in English and psychology, with minors in dramatics and education. He was a prolific writer who also wrote under the names of Ed McBain, Curt Cannon, Hunt Collins, Ezra Hannon, and Richard Marsten. His first major success came in 1954 with the publication of The Blackboard Jungle, which was later adapted as a film. He published the first three books in the 87th Precinct series in 1956 under the name of Ed McBain. He also wrote juvenile books, plays, television scripts, and stories and articles for magazines. He won the Mystery Writers of America Award in 1957 and the Grand Master Award in 1986 for lifetime achievement. He died of laryngeal cancer on July 6, 2005 at the age of 78. He also holds the Mystery Writers of America's coveted Grand Master Award. His books have sold over one hundred million copies, ranging from his most recent, "The Last Dance", to the bestselling "The Blackboard Jungle", the screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" & the bestselling "Privileged Conversation", written under his own name, Evan Hunter. A young cop finds a bag containing a severed hand, from which the fingertips have also been filed to stop identification. The usually 87th precinct detectives get on the case, which turns out to be linked to the disappearance of a young exotic dancer. More body parts are found, and McBain's attention to detail is as usual.
I found at least one scene very unfortunate; it's 1963, and when looking for people to question, they encounter a couple having sex in the afternoon. They criminalize this, and use with some found marijuana, to send these two perpetrators to jail. Kind of soured the whole book to me.… (more)

A young singer is debuting her new song & video on a boat on the river, with music press and bigwigs present, when a gang of 2 masked men kidnap her. The 87th precinct has to find out where she's being held, who kidnapped her, etc.
I haven't read an 87th precinct novel in some time. This one is very good: McBain marshalls all the characters and different aspects of the story, and it's very fast moving.

Cinderella has stolen a bunch of cocaine Florida and is being chased by a couple private detectives and a couple of thugs representing the owners of the cocaine. When a private detective is killed in the hunt, Matthew Hope gets involved. McBain -- Evan Hunter -- is a master plotter, and creator of dialog, and in this case a lot the feel of Florida from Elmore Leonard novels. A good, fast read.

This particular story is set in the mid-60s, I believe. It's about a pair of publishing partners, one of whom is murdered at the beginning of the story. The remaining partner wants to find out who did it, but more importantly, he wants to lock in the huge deal his partner was securing!
Cut Me In is a little like Mad Men with a murder-mystery twist to it. I could taste the alcoholic beverages, I could smell the cigarettes, and I LOVED the clothes!!!… (more)
