About the Author

Kent Nerburn holds a PhD in both theology and art. He is an author, sculptor, and educator who has been involved in Native American issues and education. He developed and directed an award-winning oral history project on the Red Lake Ojibwe reservation in northern Minnesota. He has edited several show more books on Native American subjects including Native American Wisdom, The Wisdom of the Native Americans, and The Soul of an Indian. He is also the author of Letters to My Son, The Wolf at Twilight, Simple Truths: Clear and Gentle Guidance on the Big Issues of Life, Small Graces: The Quiet Gifts of Everyday Life, and Ordinary Sacred: The Simple Beauty of Everyday Life. In 1995, Neither Wolf Nor Dog won the Minnesota Book Award. Nerburn uses an interesting vehicle to promote understanding of the Native American. He is the author and a character that is approached by an old Indian to write his story in educated language. He spends a good deal of time with “Dan” being driven on many back roads by Grover, another Indian, meeting friends, seeing sacred sites, and recording Dan's stories and philosophies. It purports to be true but with changed names. However in later interviews he explains it was a way of using compiled stories, oral histories and activities that he experienced or created to tell the Native American story as closely as a non-Indian could understand it. I felt a better understanding for sure, but it still read as a story.… (more)

Chief Joseph was a smart, perceptive, strong leader who met an arrogant, greed infested foe. Nerburn writes a sad story that should be read. 4.5 stars
