Although not as eloquent as Octavius Winslow or C.H. Spurgeon, to name a couple, Plumer's book should be high on the reading list for any Christian desiring help in making one's calling and election sure. In a very simple to read style Plumer treats many of the key aspects of the Christian walk such as repentance, faith, hope, contentment, zeal, and many others. He discusses each topic from both the scriptural ideal as well as from the negative in which he warns the reader as to what hinders us in spiritual progress and to the effects which follow the neglect or absence of each characteristic. He also includes helpful chapters on matters such as backsliding, and spiritual darkness which often beset believers on their pilgrimage.
There can be no doubt that the Lord makes great use of good books written in centuries past for our progress in sanctification. This is one such book that I will be turning back to for help in my own walk.
