Jakob Kuisl is a hangman in 1659 Bavaria. The descriptions of his trade as torturer and executioner are gruesome. The details of life at that time are graphic and uncomfortable. This is the backdrop for this mystery surrounding the deaths of village orphans, thought to be the work of a witch. Jakob is ordered to extract a confession, but he thinks she is innocent. By doing all he can to delay proceedings, he, his daughter and her suitor, a young doctor, race against time to find the real murderer. Very well done, but graphic. Unexpectedly fascinating, with really great plot twists and a bit of supernatural feel to it. I loved the look back to pre-dissection medicine and how the hangman knew more (and better) medicine than the local doctor, who mostly just bled people. And we all know how well THAT worked.

Read 200 of the 500 pages and gave up. The characters were not at all appealing to me and, at least in translation, speech was sometimes annoyingly modern.

So good... I lost sleep. I like how Potzsch makes historical figures come alive in their time period, yet they're relatable. I love how he wove two timelines together, and his villain and the conclusion of book were very creative.

I LOVE Ludwig II of Austria, and this book was very satisfying.
