This contemporary romance was engaging and a quick read. It hits a lot of the romance memes. It is an enemies to lovers romance. At least it is on the heroine's part. She has an embarrassing memory of a drunken hookup with the hero.

Chelsea Higgins runs a successful dog training business. When she learns that her new next-door neighbor is Andrew Gibson, she's less than thrilled. They have known each other since college when he was her best friend's roommate. Now he's opening a gym next door and has an untrained deaf boxer that he doesn't keep on a leash often enough for Chelsea.

The rivalry they had in college soon turns to bantering and to romance as Chelsea gets to know the real Andrew as opposed to the person she made him in her mind when they were in college together.

Besides the romance, Chelsea is also still dealing with the death of her father from cancer and the changes that has made in her family. She's also distanced herself from her best friends as a part of her grief.

I liked the people in this story, and I really liked the dogs. Chelsea's senior dog Birdie and her new puppy Edith and Andrew and his deaf Boxer named Duke were all active characters in this romance.

Fans of contemporary romance will enjoy this one.

This is a feel-good romance with extra credit for dog lovers. The blurb on the back cover offers a good summary: “A burned-out veterinarian takes a much-needed beach vacation, where a charming surfer makes waves in her love life and a unique foster pup renews her passion for her work.”

I enjoyed another book by prolific author Victoria Schade (Who Rescued Who), so hoped this one would also be as good – and I think it’s even better. I didn’t know that Schade was a dog trainer and speaker who serves as a dog resource for the media. But her knowledge of dogs shone through in this novel, adding another dimension that made this exceedingly readable.

The book takes place during one summer on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts, where veterinarian Morgan Pearce goes to heal from her overly stressful job. Dogs and surfing are juxtaposed with more serious themes of compassion fatigue, suicide, and bullying as well as forgiveness and family. Morgan learns that “the mistakes of the past didn’t define the future. That fences could be mended, and bridges rebuilt if they were given the proper care and attention. That forgiveness felt better than grudges.”

This would be a great summer beach read, or any time of year. I highly recommend.

The heavy emotional toll of Morgan's career as a veterinarian sends her into a tailspin. Long time clients, with a fussy, diabetic dog, offer relief and a summer of dog sitting little Bernadette on relaxing Nantucket. Schade knows her dogs, they are written with great qualities and voices of their own. I like her books a lot because of this. Morgan isn't sure a summer fling is smart, but entrepreneur Nathan can at least teach her to surf. Cute, fulfulling read for the end of the summer.

4.5 sweet happy romantic stars
This is such a feel good read. Life has dumped a pile on Elizabeth's life plans. She lives in the fast lane, demanding job, social media addict, no real friends (no time) no pets, no family. It's all about work, till there is no work. This girl doesn't know how to do free time, or how set her phone off. She receives a message from England, from a man claiming to be her uncle, claiming to hold her land, too bad she doesn't have an uncle right ?
The truth is a windy road, she must travel to learn who she really is and what she really desires in life.
Gods I love this author's work ! She writes such charming characters and dogs. I can't wait to get my hands on more from her
