Mindfullness is becoming another education buzzword but this author goes beyond the hype and gets into how very important it is to add Mindful principles for social and emotional learning to every classroom. Mussey uses research based evidence as well as classroom examples to demonstrate the importance of empathy and kindness among students and teachers. Covering the eight principles of mindfullness this book goes beyond the theory and gives practical steps for schools/teachers to help foster a more caring environment for all. ( )

This book mostly covers how teachers can practice mindfulness in the classroom, not how to teach you students mindfulness, which is what I thought it would be. Nonetheless, it has some great practical applications, which are well presented in the "Try This" sections at the end of the chapters. I would especially suggest this to a teacher having a difficult time with a class or certain students.

I am not a teacher, but my daughter is going through school to become one. But I did read and loved it. The word love is prevalent in this book. The way to show love and empathy in a classroom is great. My daughter in fact liked reading it that she was doing extra credit for her class on the subject of mindfulness in the classroom. It was a good read and I would definitely say any teacher needs to read. ( )

This has been a great, timely resource for me as my students over the years have an increasing need for self-regulation due to the increase of tension, stress, and anxiety-induced situations in our world today. I find this to be a very valuable and applicable book for my profession. ( )

I received this book as an Early Reviewer. It was a good read. I would've liked a few more ways to implement mindfulness in the classroom. But it was a good book, especially for those teachers who have not yet learned much about mindfulness or how to implement it. ( )

This is a well-written book about exploring 'mindfulness' in the classroom. It may be too touchy-feely for some environments, but it does offer an alternative view that makes worth reading. ( )

Season Mussey begins this education book with a dramatic plea for love: love in the classroom, love for students, love for other teachers. She connects the current interest in SEL (social-emotional learning) with this need for love as a foundation. Love is the motivator for all the rest.

I was at first taken aback by the overt call to love. But as I read the book, with its personal examples and anecdotes I was persuaded that love is what makes all the work worthwhile. Mussey gives eight foundational principles for her idea: "I" Work; Creativity; Cultivating Connections; Writing, Breathing and Movement; Gratitude; Holding Space; and Commit-to-One. She lists the essential components of each principles and then goes on to explain how these concepts look in the classroom. She combines general, over-arching goals and principles with specific examples and strategies for implementation.

At the back of the book are lesson plans in how to teach selected principles. I found these plans helpful both as examples that I could use directly and as ideas that sparked other ideas for creating curriculum for myself.

Mussey is clearly an educator of passion and intelligence. It is known that people who feel valuable, who are emotionally healthy, have more energy and a greater ability to invest in activities that extend beyond themselves. Students with strong relationships and self-esteem are, at least is the thought, better able to engage in learning. I believe this is true.

Committing to Mussey's beliefs and enacting her principles in the classroom would, I believe, lead to happier classrooms filled with students--and teachers--who are happy to be there and eager to learn. I look forward to working to shift my own teaching practice to incorporate these principles in the classroom and in my life. ( )

Mindfulness is THE buzzword these days, it seems. This book is a practical guide as to how it can be introduced into the classroom. The goals for such as endeavor as well as the benefits for students and teacher alike are spelled out in easily accessible language and well organized chapters that present eight Mindfulness principles, concluding with an example lesson plan for each of the principle in the appendix.
The female author has degrees in biology as well as teaching. ( )

A small book with lots of useful information. The writing is clear and includes visuals and tables to go along with it. Would definitely recommend for any teacher or mentor looking into the subject. ( )
