I abso-FREAKING-lutely LOVED this book!! From the first chapter I was hooked, literally I couldn't put the book down!
Kylie is your "normal" teenager, dealing with normal teenager things. Her boyfriend Trey and her broke up, her parents are getting a divorce, and her best friend is changing right before her eyes. Then you enter the fact that Kylie has a stalker; though her stalker is a ghost that only she can see!
Kylie ends up at a party with her friend Sara, and while there she spots her ex Trey with another girl; that in itself is heartbreaking to anyone. Long story short, the party gets busted up by the cops and all the kids that didn't run end up in jail ( Kylie included). After her mom shows up ( even though she called her dad), Kylie finds out that her mom is going to send her to a camp for kids with "problems". After getting on the bus to the camp, Kylie starts to notice that everyone is a little strange.
After Kylie arrives at the camp, she starts getting weird looks and it really freaks her out. When she learns that she is at a camp for Supernatural teens and that she is surrounded by shapeshifters, vampires, werewolves, witches and all sort of Fae; she realistically freaks out. She doesn't believe that she belongs at the camp and trys to come up with ways to get out. Understandably she doesn't believe that she is special like the rest of the campers and is determined not to admit that she has a gift.
There is of course the love triangle with Kyle, Derek( who is half fae), Lucas; whom used to live next to her when they were younger and is also a werewolf.
There are some great parts to the book, and I feel as though I could write for hours about it, but I don't want to spoil anymore than I already have!!!
I can't wait for Awake at Dawn, the next book in the series to come out!!! And i will be heading to my bookstore this weekend to pick up my own copy of Born at Midnight, because this is one book that REALLY needs to be on my bookshelf:) ( )

Though it felt a little preachy at times, things weren't quite as black and white as they seemed. Great tension and an exciting story. ( )

I didn't get very far into the book because I hit a bad and unexpected trigger that left me unable to continue.

This book was really fun to read with an interesting plot that keeps you wondering what will happen next. I really liked all the different characters and seeing how they developed throughout the book as well as seeing how the various relationships changed throughout the book. I am really looking forward to the next book!

I originally read this without having read the prequel book Turned at Dark and while it is easy enough to read book first the prequel does a really nice job of introducing the world and Della's character. ( )

I don't think this book is completely deserving of the beating it has taken in some reviews, but I don’t think it deserves 5, 4 or even 3 stars either. The tone was very immature, which I think would have worked better in the first person than in the third. I cringe when I remember some of my own boy-craziness, indecisiveness and prejudices as a teenager, and while these things are annoying to read about, I think they’re also valid portrayals of someone who needs to grow up. If Kylie does turn out to be descended from some kind of love goddess or god (I’ve only read the first in the series, so maybe her origins are revealed in book 2), her relationships will make a little more sense, as will the fact that so many people ask her for love advice and so many boys fall for her. The author hints at that, but by the end of the first book, we still don’t know what Kylie is.

Were many of her phrases real clunkers? Yes, definitely. Reading “b with an itch” or “crappers” once was bad enough, but they were in there a few times, which was really a crime against writing. The segment, which has been mentioned in other reviews, explaining how Kylie knew Derek wasn’t gay and why he used the term “fae”, was just plain stupid.

One of my teen patrons at the library wanted me to read this, which is why I stuck with it until the end. I’m not sure how I’ll go about telling her what I think about it, but I do know it won’t be on the top of my recommendation list for other kids who ask.

This book doesnt have a love triangle-It has a love hyper-rectangle I mean the potential love interests throws themselves at the main character wherever she goes.So if youre a die-hard Twilight fan this book might be for you

The main character is 16-year old Kylie, her parents are getting a divorce and she keeps seeing this weird figure on her front lawn thats invisible to everyone else but her.To get away from it all she goes to a party that ends badly when the police breaks up the party, with her being arrested because the police who broke up the party found some drugs And then she gets sent off to a camp for troubled teens.

Troubled teens being an euphemish for troubled supernatural teens.

I have to admit I had so many issues with this book.

At first I respected Kylie for wanting to save her virginity for someone special, then she let the reader know what happens if you hurry into losing your virginity (her friend does) You sleep around, start to party hard and wear revealing clothes (IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU!)

So basically the author is saying you can be a madonna or a whoreOo

In the end she got a holier than thou personality I especially like *sarcasm* how she admits feeling good about listening to other peoples problems

So the main character is a girl who looks down on girls who arent virgins, take comfort in friends problems and twists her father around her little finger. hmm well she sounds so nice!

And the twitching eyebrow thingy...was just so so silly. You have to read it just to understand what I mean.

And also the "your power is like this but were going to imply that your powers are way different"

Holiday "We dont know what you are"
Kylie "But I see dead people.."
Holiday "Youre like me-a ghost whisperer"
Kylie "So you do know what kind of supernatural I am!"
Holiday: "Will you leave me alone if I just nod mysteriously and say no?" ( )

Vampires are very popular with young adults and this is series is a favorite. Additionally, the author is a Texas author and a SPOT (Spirit of Texas YA author) (i served on this TLA Committee and got to personally meet the author).

Kylie Galen has had a lot of crap tossed in her lap lately. Her parents are getting a divorce for who the heck knows why. Her boyfriend broke up with her because she wouldn't put out. And her grandmother died because . . . well, older people do that. But now, Kylie's acquired a stalker and she hasn't a clue what he wants or how to get rid of him . . . and she really wants to get rid of him because apparently she's the only one who sees him. Thinking she may be losing it, her parents send her off to see a psychologist who gets Kylie sent to Shadow Falls Camp. Kylie and her parents think it's a camp for troubled teens.

They thought wrong.

Kylie's surrounded by vampires, werewolves, fairies, witches and shapeshifters. And if she believes what they tell her, she's one of them. They're just not sure exactly how she fits in. As Kylie struggles to cope with the realization that these creatures even exist, and the fact that she might not be human, she's got two hot guys, a werewolf and a half-fairy vying for her attention. And they can just keep vying. Kylie's determined that before she lets her heart loose on love, she needs to unearth the truth. What does the ghost want? Who can and can't she trust? And most of all . . . What is she? ( )

I really enjoyed this book and I couldn't put it down and just finished it as fast as I could. And rushed into picking up the second book to find out what happens next.

I love the characters that were introduced, the premise of the plot, and the main character. There is a certain amount of mystery that it keeps you reading to find out what happens next. I like Kylie and reading from her POV as she's trying to figure out who she is. ( )

This was an enjoyable read. True it was filled with classic YA tropes and a love triangle. But I enjoyed reading about the main character and the reason for her being at Shadow Falls camp. Kylie was interesting and reading her grow from a bratty teenager into a responsible one was nice. I loved Kylie’s friendships with the other camp mates including her cabin friends Della and Miranda. The triangle between Lucas, Kylie and Derek was not as cringing as I thought it may have been. The ending definitely makes me want to carry on to see what happens next at Shadow Falls ( )

This is a nice 'coming of age' book. Kylie is basically having the worst months of her life. Her grandmother has died, her boyfriend dropped her when she refused to 'do it' with him, her parents are divorcing, and she's started seeing this strange man standing around. Then she gets sent off to a camp for deliquents (which is really for supernaturals) and is told that she is not human.

I'm not going to say that that I particularly like the characterisations in this (but I'm hoping that they will be fleshed out over the remainder of the series). Kylie seems to see everything in black and white. Her best friend Sara is sexually active so she's a slut. The other campers look different so they're freaks.

So basically, Kylie's a typical teenager. Yep she's judgemental and says some really stupid things (her filters definitely don't come into play) but that's pretty much true to life. I'm hoping that as the books proceed that she does grow up and become more accepting. I'll follow this series through to see. ( )

i think this book is okay. Although i did not seem to understand some things written in the book, i still find it funny in a way. I think there are repititions in this book anyway ( )

PUT THE BOOK DOWN! Trust me, you do not want to read this book. I felt obligated to read it because it was on my "to read" list for years, and I thought there must have been a good reason for that. NO!

The writing is atrocious- simple, repetitive, unnatural, grating.

The heroine is the most stubborn, whiny, judgemental girl ever to walk the planet. She gets sent to a camp for supernatutals (disguised as a "troubled teens" camp), and spends the whole time INSISTING she must be human, for no apparent reason. And her power, seeing ghosts- BORING! She does nothing special with her power either.

This is also one of THOSE stories, where the heroine has too many hot boys lusting after her- three to be exact. That is super hard to pull off, and the author of this book does not succeed. Kylie doesn't really do anything worthy of their desire except act like a total idiot, and they are all way too "mysterious" or "dangerous".

I promise you, if you have even an ounce of taste you will not like this book. I've read alot of Teen/YA fantasy, and this is one of the worst I have ever come across. If you think you liked this book, just stop for a minute and pick up pretty much any other book of its genre. This book just doesn't match up in any way.

In Shadow Falls Born at Midnight a girl named Kylie had just lost her grandmother, her parents where getting a divorce, and she has now gained a stalker no one else can see. Kylie goes to a therapist and the therapist tells her mom she needs to go to bad kids camp. The bad kids camp is really a camp for supernaturals to learn about their powers and how to control them. Kylie can't believe this and it's already bad enough with her night terrors, her soldier dude stalker, her grandmas death, and her parents divorce. Kylie gets to the bus pick up area for the camp she sees a girl dressed in all black with jet black hair and a girl holding a frog with green, pink, and black stripped hair. Then she sees a boy that she swears just had greens eyes that are now jet black. She gets to camp and everyone is staring at he trying to read her brain pattern. She quickly learns that she is not human and becomes friends with Della and Miranda, the girls from the bus. Her and Holiday (the camp leader) try to figure out what she is but fail. She learns that she is has the gift of ghost whispering and learns that Soldier dude is really her real dad that had died in the war in the middle east. The wild park next door has been having animals go missing. Kylie decides to take matter in her own hands and solve the mystery. Daniel (soldier dude aka real dad) take control of her body to help beat the blood brother gang that has been taking and killing the animals in the wild park.

I personally loved this book. I thought is it was fantastic. I thought it was very funny, full of action, etc... I would definitely recommend it to anybody who loves fiction and fantasy books full of action, comedy, tragedy, and a little romance. This book was great. Well, it was kind of boring in the beginning. It was really slow. Then one Kylie got to camp and became friends with Della and Miranda things got more interesting. Other than the slow beginning the book was really good. Like I said before I would recommend it to anyone who loves fiction and fantasy books. ( )

I did not make it all the way through "Born at Midnight." I stopped reading approximately 85 pages in when the main character's reaction to a teenage shapeshifter doing his level best to cuddle her bosom contrasted to everything I had come to expect from her.

Shortly put, Kylie Galen is a two-dimensional, judgmental, hypocrite. The word "freak" is bandied about due to the rest of the cast's clothing choice ("all black" and "goth," though not further elaborated upon) and dyed hair color. Male characters are potential love interests and the female characters that hang about them are "slutty." There are no gray areas in the minor characters' characterization or, it would seem, in the love interests' characterization.

What I found to be particularly disturbing was the blatant slut-shaming Kylie imposes on her so-called best friend. Sara is described as a good girl gone bad, who used to value her chastity until discovering sex, at which point she became a party girl and a terrible friend who attempts to cheer Kylie up by shoving drinks at her. When Kylie is shipped off to camp, Sara has a pregnancy scare. We are led to believe that the pregnancy scare is a natural extension of her slut-hood.

Kylie, of course, has three boys drifting about to choose from: her ex-boyfriend (they broke up because Kylie wouldn't put out), a half-Fae boy at camp who looks like her ex-boyfriend, and a seemingly intimidating werewolf boy who once ate her cat. Her ex is manipulative and needy, the half-Fae boy is two-dimensional but otherwise apparently harmless, and the werewolf boy does not come across as intimidating as Ms. Hunter would have him seem.

Overall, "Born at Midnight" was not worth the sale price I paid for it and I wish I had never bothered to pick it up. ( )

I really enjoyed this book. It was fast paced with well developed characters. Although it is the first book in the series (and I plan to read more), it stands alone and doesn't leave you on a cliffhanger, and thus frustrated, as so many series do with each individual book. What I liked best is Kylie doesn't immediately embrace her life as a supernatural. Instead, the process is more organic. At first she fights the idea and then when presented with irrefutable information, naturally comes to accept that supernaturals exist and then even more slowly accepts that she is one. ( )
  christinegrabowski | Aug 26, 2018 |
Although there are moments where everything seems to have to do with sex the idea behind the story and the characters are wonderful. I'm really curious to see what Kylie is and if I will ever find out. I'm not liking the love triangle right now but I hope it'll get resolved soon. ( )

I have been wanting to read this series for quite awhile. This is the first of five books in the Shadow Falls series. I finally decided to bring the book with me on vacation and read it on the plane. This ended up being a pretty typical paranormal YA book. However I enjoyed the mystery behind the main character’s developing powers and also enjoyed the characters in the book. There wasn't a lot in here that was new or creative, but it is a well done paranormal YA book that I enjoyed reading.

The main heroine in this book Kylie can see ghosts and has horrible nightmares (although as the book continues you find out it’s more than that). Her parents are going through a messy divorce and in order to allow her to cope better Kylie’s mom signs her up for Shadow Falls camp; a camp for troubled teens.

The whole idea of sending a young adult off to camp or boarding school is done quite a bit in paranormal YA books. Additionally the cast of characters in this book (vampires, werewolves, and witches) is also pretty typical. There are a few interesting additions to the mix; Derek can commune with animals and nature and Kylie’s powers seem to be something different altogether.

The plot alternates between Kylie trying to figure out what she is and a mystery involving animals being stolen from the neighboring wildlife refuge; this is very much a mystery/investigative story.

Despite the fact that there isn’t anything super original in here I enjoyed the book. I haven’t been reading much paranormal YA lately and this was a good one. The book is well written, an easy light read, and there are hints of some more interesting plot developments to come. This was just a fun and quick paranormal read.

Overall this was a well done YA paranormal book that was an easy and fun read. I plan on reading the next book in the series and, if I enjoy that book even more than this one, I will continue with the series. I would recommend to fans of YA paranormal books. ( )

I had a feeling I would like this book when I read what it was about. What I didn't realize was how much I would enjoy it. I loved it. I love Kylie. I love her story and the journey she is on and how she isn't like other girls who just say "YOLO" and take the easy road.

The twist at the end had me in tears which is what ultimately makes this a five star for me. I had suspicions but the twist wasn't what I saw coming. I can't wait for book two! ( )
