Fun Fact: I read this book before The Sorcerer's Stone because my 11 year old self was bare dumb and didn't know that this wasn't the first one lmao ( )

Several of my most trusted Goodreads friends gave this 5 stars, which makes me question my own reaction to the book. It may be that I listened to the audiobook, which meant I didn't always have my full attention on the story as I multi-tasked. Or, maybe, this being my 1st HP read (it was the first of the series that became available to me on the Libby app, and I've seen none of the movies), I would have been better off starting with book 1.

At 64, I still have a soft spot for YA, and I do enjoy fantasy, so I'm thinking the problem lies with me.
I will continue on with the series, back-tracking to the Sorcerer's Stone, but this time with a print copy, so I can give it a proper read. ( )

After over 20 rereadings, I believe it's time to review "Harry Potter". To those of you saying that I'm crazy (like my mum) - mind your own business. And to those of you admiring me - thank you.
I'll try to keep these short.

So, the second novel is more serious than the first one. Of course it is because it deals with racism and slavery. (Although we were just kids and may not have realized that, but we still noticed the injustice, one of the major themes in the series).
There is also a reference to the Vanishing Cabinet and the Opal Necklace, which would reappear in the sixth novel. To be honest, this books has so many ties to the sixth novel. It's no wonder that "A Very Potter Senior Year" mashed these two novels together. I mean we've encountered the first horcrux without even knowing about them.
The mystery is even more intriguing, but if I were older, I would've solved it. I mean, it's really easy. Harry started hearing strange whispers which only he can hear and then he discovers that he can talk to snakes. But I was too young to figure that out.
Secondary characters are no longer one-dimensional, which is an improvement from the first novel.
And Lockhart. He is so annoying with his vanity. He always thinks that he smarter than everybody. And it annoys me so much when he cockily tells Harry that it's still early for him to give signed photographs and maybe even more when he offers to teach Harry Quidditch. He's pretty much the only Ravenclaw I actually hate (I'm a Ravenclaw, btw)
But we got to meet the Weasleys on a more personal level and got a first major ship - Hinny. (Romione was still in early stages)

FILM NOTES:
Most of the scenes are there. I just wished we could've seen Peeves and Nick's Deathday Party.

PERSONAL NOTES:
I'm not sure if I'd read or watched this first. I know I've watched the first one on Christmas Eve back in 2004 I believe. I was so hooked that I watched a rerun the following day and borrowed the first two books from the school library in the next couple of weeks. But I may be wrong. Maybe I've watched the second movie and then borrowed the second book. I'm not sure. It was a long time ago. ( )

First sentence: Not for the first time, an argument had broken out over breakfast at number four, Privet Drive. Mr. Vernon Dursley had been woken in the early hours of the morning by a loud, hooting noise from his nephew Harry's room.

ETA: This is my second time to read Chamber of Secrets. I enjoyed it more the second time around. I definitely am already attached to many of the characters.

Premise/plot: Harry Potter is being held captive by his aunt and uncle. He's "forbidden" to continue his studies at Hogwarts. For better or worse, he's "rescued" via flying car driven by a Weasley sibling. [This scene where he's passing all his stuff through the window to a waiting car reminded me of a scene where someone is escaping a cult]. After a lovely time with the Weasleys, time at last to buy supplies for school and head off for Hogwarts for their second year. But...Ron and Harry miss the train. For better or worse, flying car to the "rescue." These two cause quite the disturbance on their way to school....
Ginny Weasley, Harry Potter's biggest fan???, is joining her big brother at Hogwarts.

This school year has its ups and downs. A 'monster' from a secret chamber is terrorizing students and staff. No one knows for sure who is responsible--though Hermione, Harry, and Ron have their suspicions. (But I don't think any of them guessed accurately...)

My thoughts: I enjoyed this one more than the first book. I enjoyed the mystery. I enjoyed the ghosts. I enjoyed the reveals of character's backstories. It was packed with action. It didn't seem so info-dumpy. ( )

Jim Kay's dazzling depiction of J.K. Rowling's wizarding world has won legions of fans since the first Illustrated Edition of the Harry Potter novels was published in hardback in 2015, becoming a bestseller around the world. This irresistible smaller-format paperback edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets perfectly pairs J.K. Rowling's storytelling genius with the enchantment of Jim Kay's illustrations, bringing the magic of Harry Potter to new readers with full-colour pictures and a handsome poster pull-out at the back of the book. This edition has been beautifully redesigned with selected illustration highlights - the fully illustrated edition is still available in hardback.

Fizzing with magic and brimming with humour, this inspired reimagining will captivate wizards and Muggles alike, as Harry and his friends, now in their second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, seek out a legendary chamber and the deadly secret that lies at its heart .

Can I ever say anything that would be close to describing how crazy good these books are? Of course not. I am amazed at how much I am loving this series. I did not read them growing up and I am now 24. Yet this series is still great! Love it! ( )

This is my first time reading through the entire series but as with the first book this blew me away! Rowling truly made a pure story here with the characters and finally *SPOILER* the introduction of Tom Riddle. It's interesting how the movies do a very thorough job of bringing this beautiful story to life! I will always admire this book and look the characters buried within this treasure :) I still haven't read the rest of the series but have officially seen all of the movies and just want to line all of the pieces up as I go through. Seeing Harry, Hermoine and Ron's relationship blossom is the icing on the cake so to speak I'm excited to continue! Oh and who can forget Dobby lol ( )

Fantastic the second time. As with the first book, I am struck by just how complex the entire series truly is. The foreshadowing of events and relationships which will not mature until several books later is patently obvious in retrospect. The depth of character development, especially in the secondary characters (i.e. not Harry) is breathtaking. ( )

Harry Potter is back for his second year at Hogwarts (despite a bit of trouble getting there), and mysterious things are happening at the school. Students are being attacked, just as they were decades earlier when the mysterious Chamber of Secrets was opened. The Heir of Slytherin is said to have the ability to open the Chamber of Secrets and unleash its horror, and many at Hogwarts suspect that Harry may be the heir. Harry, with the help of Ron and Hermione, will need to find the real heir of Slytherin in order to acquit himself.

The setting and characters are the stars of the story rather than the plot. I guessed where things were headed fairly early on, although there were a couple of twists that surprised me. Despite the narration by the outstanding Jim Dale, my mind would wander, and I would find that I hadn’t missed anything important. The house elf, Dobby, became a sentimental favorite for me because my grandparents had a dog by that name when I was a child, long before Harry Potter’s creation. ( )

The second entry in the Harry Potter franchise is, in my opinion, the most underrated one. This is considered by most Harry Potter fans to be the weakest story in the entire saga. However, I respectfully disagree. While I acknowledge a lot of the flaws people have with it, I also have a lot of things I absolutely love that make it stand a hair over the first book, in my opinion. [return][return]My favorite aspect about this whole book is the mystery. Yes, it's not perfect (there are lots of plot holes), but I still consider it very well-written as a whole. Rowling did an ungodly job setting it up and revealing all the major information in the final couple chapters. I tell you, when I first read this book about five years ago, I just could not put it down. The mystery had me absolutely enthralled, and the major reveals in the end absolutely blew my mind. I could not stop thinking about them for hours after I had finished the book and put it down. Well done, Rowling.[return][return]Not only do I like the way the mystery is built up and resolved, but I also love the dark tone it sets all over Hogwarts. A lot of people complain about the major shift in tone between this book and the books coming before and after it, but I honestly don't see a problem with it. I love the brooding and ominous air all over Hogwarts in the last 200 pages of this story. The fact that a giant monster is creeping around this massive school and trying to kill students is a very simple, yet effective story beat. It really hooked me in and never let go. I just couldn't help but continue reading to see what happens next. [return][return]Harry Potter continues to show why he's become one of the most iconic fictional characters of all time. Not only does he go on incredible adventures and solve mind-bending mysteries, but he truly has a heart of gold. You just can't hate the guy. He is the perfect protagonist. Not only are his morals completely straight, but he's been through a lot at school and throughout his early life. Making him be bullied by the Dursleys for the first ten years of his life is a great decision as it makes the reader more empathetic towards him. He's poor and humble, and that's partly what makes him so likeable. [return][return]This book is obviously not perfect, though. While Rowling created an engaging mystery, she made it a little too big and complex. Consequently, lots of plot holes propped up. Why did the Basilisk just slither through the pipes and not into school grounds? Why did it stop at paralyzing one victim before retreating temporarily and coming back a few weeks later to hunt more students? Why did Tom Riddle explain the entire mystery to Harry down in the Chamber of Secrets instead of just killing him when he had the chance? How did Harry get the extremely convenient instinct to stab Riddle's diary with a Basilisk fang? Why did Ginny dispose of Riddle's Diary in Myrtle's bathroom where Harry and Ron would conveniently end up in not too long afterwards? I could go on. The point is that there are too many things that happen simply to push the plot forward. The entire final scene between Harry and Riddle in the Chamber of Secrets is chock full of conveniences that ensure that Harry survives and Riddle's diary gets destroyed. [return][return]Also, the first 100 or so pages are a bit slow, in my opinion. Not much happens, and it does get a little boring at times. Thankfully, as soon as Harry hears the Basilisk for the first time, the story instantly gets more exciting, and I just can't stop reading it from that point onwards. ( )

Book 2. A fun read. Keeps you entertained with the imaginative happenings. Goodreads: 4.43 Rating details   2,638,988 ratings   51,000 reviewsEver since Harry Potter had come home for the summer, the Dursleys had been so mean and hideous that all Harry wanted was to get back to the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he?s packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange impish creature who says that if Harry returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike. And strike it does. For in Harry?s second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck-up new professor and a spirit who haunts the girls? bathroom. But then the real trouble begins ? someone is turning Hogwarts students to stone. Could it be Draco Malfoy, a more poisonous rival than ever? Could it possible be Hagrid, whose mysterious past is finally told? Or could it be the one everyone at Hogwarts most suspects Harry Potter himself!
