I'm jumping the gun, but soon I'll be a Mac user and I'm pretty excited - I've just ordered my first Mac, a white MacBook 2GHz with 2GB of RAM :-D

Yay for new Macs. I got a MacBook this summer. I think it is my fifth Mac, going back to an original Mac Plus sometimes in the mid-80s.

Anyone have any views on the Mac Mini?

lilithcat,

Unfortunately - in New Zealand Mac's aren't in many retail stores, so the ability to experience them without buying is limited :-( but from what I've seen online the Mac Mini seems to be popular especially due to the low cost as a result of using existing peripherals most PC owners already have.

I was considering a Mini, but I have the windows desktop, and miss not having a laptop to share the wireless access point I installed for Mum to surf wirelessly hehe.

At the moment I use my PSP for a quick wireless surf in the mornings before work, but it's tedious to type on and doesn't handle some LT javascript well :-P

A friend of mine has a Mini and she just loves it. She never uses her old G5 anymore.

My advice would be to get the 'AppleCare protection plan' that extends the warranty to three years. They are expensive, but we wasted so much money on our first Mac because the warranty had expired two months before the crash.

Learn how to make backups ;-)

Make sure you at least look at The Missing Manuals by David Pogue and others. They are a pleasure to read - and very helpful.

One of them is Switching to the Mac, for example.

well here I am, Mac-enabled - and it's beautiful and smells (yes it does have a "new" smell to it) lol

Welcome, Andrew B, to the great minority! How's it going? I replaced a blue G3 with a mini and I love it. Unfortunately, I haven't cleaned out the G3 so it still sits here beside me... and well, the mini conveniently sits on TOP of it so...

Our MACS go back to the 80's also; most are lined up in the basement in the "computer museum"; most still work. Only one of three children use MACs (where did I go wrong?); one has no excuse, the other works for Red Hat Linux (that's his excuse).

Thanks! I love the MacBook, especially now that the last firmware update fixed the unfortunate random rebooting issue. I was concerned I'd wear the power button out, sometimes I'd have to turn it on 40+times before it would stay on. But it's fixed now, without having to send it away, I was procrastinating sending it off lol.
