I'll be listing the books I've read in 2017, probably on a monthly basis. I'm hoping to reach a round 100 books read!

January Reads

1 Try Hard - Em Rusciano
A memoir from an Australian comedian/entertainer.

2 Death in the Bunker (Pocket Penguin 70) - Ian Kershaw
An account of Hitler's last hours in the bunker in WWII.

3 The Midnight Unicorn - Neil Reed
A delightful children's book with a bit of a twist at the end.

4 A Bad Start for Father Christmas - Sarah Hayes
A Christmas children's book.

5 Peggy and Me - Miranda Hart
A somewhat annoying book. I'm sure the author is trying to be amusing, chatty and whimsical but only succeeds in coming across as irritating.

6 There's a Hippopotamus on our Roof Eating Cake - Hazel Edwards
A funny children's book.

7 Cured - Lol Tolhurst
A biography of a man and a band (The Cure).

8 Kami and the Yaks - Andrea Stenn Stryer
An interesting children's book set in Tibet.

9 No Cunning Plan - Tony Robinson

10 An Amish Awakening - Rick Leland
A book received via Librarything's Early Reviewer program. I have to say that I didn't enjoy it at all. It was a badly written, barely readable story. The only redeeming feature was that it was short!

11 Light and Shadow: Memoirs of a Spy's Son - Mark Colvin
The biography of an ABC journalist (and his father). I enjoyed his early years much more than the more recent ones which were glossed over in a couple of paragraphs at the very end of the book. There's surely a second volume in that

February Reads

12 How to Put Your Parents to Bed - Mylisa Larsen
A fun children's book.

13 Fruits - Mark Sanders
A photographic book on Japanese street fashion.

14 Messy - Tim Harford
I had high hopes for this book - a self-help book on "messiness". Unfortunately, it was incredibly boring!

15 Dazzle the Dinosaur - Marcus Pfister
A sparkly, dazzling dinosaur saves the day!

16 The Prince and the Porker - Peter Bently
A pig dresses up and is a dead ringer for a prince in this children's book!

17 Circle - Jeannie Baker
A beautifully illustrated children's book about migratory birds.

18 Not Dead Yet - Phil Collins
A pop star's biography. I got a bit confused - I discovered that songs that I had always thought were Phil Collins songs are apparently Genesis songs!

19 Waddle Giggle Gargle! - Pamela Allen
A children's book about swooping magpies.

20 Keep Calm and Drink Up - N/A
A book of quotations on drinks and drinking.

21 Applesauce and the Christmas Miracle - Glenda Millard
A children's Christmas book.

22 Santa I've Been a Good Boy - Katie Saunders
A children's Christmas book.

23 Alanatomy - Alan Carr
Part 2 of this comedian's biography. Having seen his stand-up show live, I can confirm he writes as he speaks - I could "hear" his voice as I read the book!

March Reads
24 The Princess Diarist - Carrie Fisher
An autobiography of Carrie Fisher's time as Princess Leia, including the (apparent) new revelation that she had an affair with Harrison Ford during filming. A surprisingly quick read.

25 Choose Your Own Autobiography - Neil Patrick Harris
An unusual format for an autobiography. It's set out in a similar way to the children's "Choose Your Own Adventure" books. I'm not sure that it works - there's no way to ensure that all parts of the book are read in a way so that the story makes sense. So I ended up reading it straight through like a "normal" book anyway.

26 Mervin the Sloth is About to do the Best Thing in the World - Colleen AF Venable
A children's book with just about the longest title in the world.

27 I Don't Know What to Call My Cat - Simon Philip
A children's book with lovely illustrations.

28 The Fabulous Friend Machine - Nick Bland
The internet's not all its cracked up to be.

29 Rolling With the Punchlines - Urzila Carlson
A South African born comedian's autobiography.

30 Come Fly With Captain Kangaroo - Mandy Foot
A delightful children's book

31 Born a Crime - Trevor Noah
A South African born comedian's autobiography.

32 DAAS: Their Part in My Downfall - Paul Livingston
A surprisingly formal tale of working with comedians. I'm not sure why it was necessary to include multiple quotes from other comedians and people involved in the Melbourne comedy scene, except to perhaps flesh out the book?

33 Juliet's Answer - Glenn Dixon
A love-lorn Canadian goes to Verona to find out aboult love and becomes one of Juliet's "secretaries", answering letters from the love-lorn from around the world.

April Reads

34 The Penguin Lessons - Tom Michell
A somewhat unlikely (but apparently true) story of an Englishman adopting a penguin in Argentina. It took me a while to work out what years this book is set in as a date is never mentioned. It had to be worked out from clues, such as mentions of Pinochet being in power in Chile.

35 Kate Bush : the Biography - Rob Jovanovic
A (presumably unauthorised) biography of the musician Kate Bush. It has the air of being cobbled together from previously published interviews. Published in 2005, so now fairly dated.

36 Let's Go Outside - Katja Spitzer
A colourfully-illustrated children's book. Very few words.

37 Drink Play F@#k - Andrew Gottlieb
A fictional version of the "Eat Pray Love" book told from a male perspective. The stories became more outlandish and unbelievable as the book progressed...

38 Freckle Juice - Judy Blume
A fun read. I keep discovering new Judy Blume books I didn't know existed!

39 Sixty Degrees North - Malachy Tallack
As the title suggests, a journey around the countries located at the latitude of 60 degrees north. Many interesting locations including the Shetland Islands, Greenland, Alaska and Siberia. I'd love to have the time (and money) to do a similar trip. But perhaps not in winter!

40 Common Ground : a Political Life - Justin Trudeau
An autoiography written a couple of years ago before Trudeau became Canadian prime minister. The early parts of the story describing his time as a child of a prime minister is interesting but the latter part describing his own entry into politics less so. Is now probably due for an update or a revised edition!

41 Mystery in Mexico - Jane West
Children's book. Very quick read.

May Reads

42 Hillbilly Elegy - J.D. Vance
An interesting story of a man's struggle out of poverty and class constraints.

43 Prince A to Z - Steve Wide
A cartoon-like overview of all things Prince.

44 My Paris Dream - Kate Betts
An American spends a couple of years in Paris in her youth. I wonder if there's a second book chronicling her years working in fashion. I suspect it might actually be a more interesting story.

45 Error Australis - Ben Pobjie
A humorous history of Australia using reality TV show titles as chapter titles. Quite entertaining. Has been shortlisted the 2017 Russell Prize for Humour Writing.

46 The Helen 100 - Helen Razer
An autobiography of sorts. Full of coarse language and "adult" concepts.

47 The Most Beautiful : My Life With Prince - Mayte Garcia
An autobiography of a woman who was Prince's wife (for a while) and mother of his child. It seems to me that this was not an equal partnership. There was definitely a power imbalance given the couple's differences in age, professional standing and financial situations. Intentional or not, it doesn't paint Prince in a particularly good light.

48 The Spy Who Loved Castro - Marita Lorenz
A very silly woman making very bad life choices.

49 Bad Hair Year : Beating a Brain Tumour, Breast Cancer, and Healing a Broken Heart - Bambi Smyth
A woman faces a brain tumour and breast cancer in the space of 12 months. Some people just seem to get not just hit, but well and truly run over, by the "bad luck" truck.

50 Underpants Thunderpants! - Peter Bently
Children's book.

51 Underpants Wonderpants! - Peter Bently
Children's book.

52 The Good Little Bad Little Pig! - Margaret Wise Brown
Children's book.

53 The No Spend Year - Michelle McGagh
A woman puts herself on a extreme budget with the intention of spending as little money as possible. In fact, nothing except food and essential bills. It results in her basically having no quality of life whatsoever. She seemed to spend the entire year being miserable and missed out on so much that makes life worth living. OK, she saved some money, but makes you wonder "What was the point?".

54 The $50 Weekly Shop - Jody Allen
Tips and recipes for economical grocery shopping.

June Reads

55 One Italian Summer - Pip Williams
An Australian couple take their two children to Italy for a summer. Working on organic farms may have been interesting for the parents but I'm not sure what the kids got out of it. I couldn't help but think whatever the couple were hoping to achieve could have been done closer to home...

56 Lost and Found - Oliver Jeffers
A delightful children's book.

57 Dear Zoo - Rod Campbell
Children's book.

58 You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams - Alan Cumming
Short anecdotes and photographs taken by the Scottish actor.

59 Seven Letters From Paris - Samantha Vérant
Part 1 of an autobiography. It describes the author meeting a man in Paris and then reconnecting with him twenty years later. It seems a little unlikely but is apparently a true story.

60 How to Make a French Family - Samantha Vérant
Part 2 of an autobiography. It carries on from the first book (Seven Letters From Paris). I think it helps to have read the first book as I think the background brought context to the next book. The story still seemed unlikely and just as foolhardy!

61 A Wombat in My Drawer - Ros Almond
A straighforward and fairly basic book of animal stories.

62 The Good Girl of Chinatown - Jenevieve Chang
A fairly interesting story of a "showgirl" bringing burlesque to Shanghai.

Autobiography of a nurse's experiences from the 60s to the 80s.

65 Let's Explore Jungle - Pippa Curnick
Children's book.

66 Bill Gibson - Tina K Allen
Biography. Quite a stilted and formal writing style.

Letters written by Roald Dahl over several years.

68 Mighty, Mighty Construction Site - Sherri Duskey Rinker
Children's book.

August Reads

79 Off You Go - Maeve Higgins
Itsy bitsy semi-biography. Supposed to be humourous but it doesn't really work out that way.

80 Old Bag - Melvin Burgess
A very short book. Quick read. Large print.

81 Squish - Natalie Jane Prior
Children's book.

82 Second Chance - Patricia Scanlan
A very short book. Quick read. Large print.

83 The Thief - Ruth Rendell
A very short book. Quick read. Large print.

84 Jenius - Dick King-Smith
Children's book.

85 Woman in the Making : Panti's Memoir - Rory O'Neill
An autobiography. The early parts of the book were OK but, as it got more political, it became less interesting.

86 Only When I Laugh - Paul Merton
An autobiography. Fairly interesting.

October Reads

97 Sea Monsters - Gary Jeffrey
A children's book featuring Thor. A semi-graphic novel.

98 One Halal of a Story - Sam Dastyari
An autobiography of an Australian politician.

The second autobiography from the British comedian. I still haven't read the first volume "Dressed to Kill", which is still sitting on my bookshelf!

An autobiography of an Australian musician.

101 When I Grow Up - Tim Minchin
A children's book version of the song from the musical "Matilda".

102 Who Thought This Was a Good Idea? - Alyssa Mastromonaco
An account of a woman's time working for President Barack Obama in the White House. Vaguely unsatisfying - there wasn't nearly enough detail so her resignation came as a surprise. I certainly didn't see it coming!

103 My (Part-Time) Paris Life - Lisa Anselmo
An American woman buys an apartment in Paris and divides her time between Paris and New York. I'd love to have the funds to maintain homes in two countries and flit between the two!

104 Norman, the Demon Doorman - Jeanne Willis
An entertaining children's book about a doorman attempting to control nightclub patrons consisting of children's storybook characters.

November Reads

105 Keeping On Keeping On - Alan Bennett
A collection of Bennett's diaries and essays, covering 2005 to 2015.

106 Danger Music - Eddie Ayres
An account of Ayres' account of his time teaching music in Afghanistan. A side-story is Ayres' transition from Emma to Eddie. I felt this second story wasn't adequately covered and really deserves a book of its own.

107 A Simple Story - Leila Guerriero
A surprisingly dry account of an annual dance competition in Argentina. Maybe there was something lost in translation from Spanish to English.

108 Little Me : My Life From A-Z - Matt Lucas
An autobiography in alphabetical form.

109 Thirsty : Confessions of a Fame Whore - Joel Creasey
An entertaining, gossipy autobiography.

115 The Bum Book - Kate Mayes
Children's book. What it says on the box.

116 The Trauma Cleaner - Sarah Krasnostein
A biography of Sandra Pankhurst. The title is a little misleading as it describes the business the book's subject operates now but much of the book is about other things.

118 The Birthday Invitation - Lucy Rowland
