What are we reading in September?

Happy September, everyone! I got up early this morning to finish my first book of the month, The Garden Intrigue by Lauren Willig. Next up is A Most Agreeable Murder by Julia Seales. What are you reading this month? Please share below!

I'm planning on finishing Gone Before Christmas by Charles Finch this morning for the Aug MysteryCat. My physical book is Back When We Were Grownups by Anne Tyler, my audio book is Summer at the Robbers Library by Sue Halpern and I'm still reading Undelivered Speeches by Jeff Nussbaum on my kindle.

I've started Brotherhood by Mohamed Mbougar Sarr for the September Africa GeoCAT, and have downloaded Sunbirds by Mirandi Riwoe (no touchstones, so I will add the book to LT and return later) for the June South Asia and South East Asia GeoCAT.

I’m in the home stretch for Post Captain (Aubrey/Maturin #2; by Patrick O’Brian) and should finish it up by the end of this Labor Day Weekend;

I’m also closing in on the final chapters of The Collapse of the Third Republic: An Inquiry into the Fall of France in 1940 (by William L. Shirer; narrated by Grover Gardner)— will probably wrap it up by the end of this coming week;

And I’ve just started Night Watch (Night Watch #1; by Sergei Lukyanenko).

I read The Great Fire of London excerpts from S. Pepys diary in the Penguin Little Black Classics series.

Currently reading Scrib by David Ives for RandomKit challenge, and West Side Love Story for Hispanic Heritage Month. I love the idea of an all-female mariachi band! It is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet.

I love Shorty September as I am five books for five days so far! Needed this to catch up on some stats!

Over the weekend I read Darcie Wilde's And Dangerous to Know, and I'm now in the middle of The Ruby in the Smoke by Philip Pullman.

I finished reading Read to Death at the Lakeside Library which was a three star read. I also read a bio of Picasso for kids Pablo Picasso by Ibi Lepscky which was a Trumpet Book Club edition, taking me back to elementary school days!

I am finishing The Valentine Visitor in the Blue Hill Library series.

I read The right sort of man by Allison Montclair and Station eleven by Emily St. John Mandel over the last couple of days. Right now I am reading The vanished birds by Simon Jimenez, who has been compared to Ursula Le Guin, but remind me more of C.S. Friedman.

Last night I read Maureen Johnson and Jay Cooper's Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village in one sitting. Now I've begun The Duke's Wicked Wife by Elizabeth Bright.

I've finished listening to Summer Hours at the Robbers Library by Sue Halpern and am going to start Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam for my next audio.

I finished Post Captain (Aubrey/Maturin #2; by Patrick O’Brian) and Night Watch (Night Watch #1; by Sergei Lukyanenko) and; so very close to finishing The Collapse of the Third Republic: An Inquiry into the Fall of France in 1940 (by William L. Shirer; narrated by Grover Gardner)!

I have to go away next week on a work-related trip and I'm not sure how much reading I'll actually get done--so I'm eager to wrap everything up and post reviews before I go! :-)

Currently I am reading Through Black Spruce by Joseph Boyden and have started Windhall by Ava Barry. I am about to start listening to Remarkably Bright Creatures as well.

Now I just need to write a few reviews and maybe even sneak in a short book, Saint Death (by Marcus Sedgwick) 🙂

I've begun Kit McBride Gets a Wife by Amy Barry, which so far is a lot of fun!

Started and finished a Doctor Who novel today: The Deviant Strain, by Justin Richards. Not many novels featuring the Ninth Doctor, so snapped it up when I saw it in a secondhand shop.

I'm reading I, Robot for my last Bingo square, writer under 30. Also reading A Month in the Country for our real-life book group. It's a re-read.

Finished Saint Death (by Marcus Sedgwick) and have started listening to Blitz (The Rookery #3; by Daniel O’Malley; narrated by Moira Quirk).
I’ve also packed a mass market copy of The Tailor of Panama (by John Le Carré) to take with me on my business trip next week. ✈️

I'm halfway through both The Neverending Story and Violets are Blue. The first is for a challenge in the SFFKit group, the second cuz I needed something to take my mind off of what the auto mechanic might find when I brought my car in! Fortunately, it's a newer model and everything was what I expected. Even the new battery, since the old one was 4 years old.

I've begun The Benevolent Society of Ill-Mannered Ladies by Alison Goodman.

I am finishing The Valentine Visitor and also reading Sources of Light for our on ground book club.

I am currently reading Chaka by Thomas Mofolo, a 1,001 book about the famous African Zulu leader. I watched a tv mini-series about him a number of years ago so I already had a pretty clear picture. I am also reading The Guide by Peter Heller and although I am a fan of this author, I doubt that this particular book will go down as a favorite.

Started Hot Stew (by Fiona Mozley) on the plane ride and am halfway through. This was a Buzzfeed Book Club pick a couple years ago when I was interested in an another online book club for a hot minute! I was quickly reminded however how I don’t really do well in group read formats— so I set this aside until this year when it showed up as one of my 23 in ‘23 selections 🙂

I'm about a third of the way in with The River We Remember, and it's excellent!

I've finished Precious and Grace by Alexander McCall Smith and am starting Seeking Whom He May Devour by Fred Vargas.

Well, even though I packed a copy of The Tailor of Panama (by John Le Carré), I decided to hold off on it and read Mirror of Our Sorrows (Les Enfants du Disastre #3; by Pierre Lemaitre; translated from the French by Frank Wynne) instead.

ETA: I read the first two books in the trilogy earlier in the year for a prompt, “Between the Wars” in the Reading Through Time group. I saved this final installment for the WWII prompt as it takes place in 1940 🙂

I'm about to start the next book in Stella Riley's Rockliffe series, The Wicked Cousin. I've been loving the series so far, so I'm excited!

I am currently reading A Most Agreeable Murder for NetGalley.

I finally received Babel: An Arcane History from the library, so I'm going to let it jump the queue and start reading it right away.

I am currently reading The Paris Mystery by Kirsty Manning.

The Fraud wasn’t grabbing my attention, so I returned it to the library. I am now reading Normal Rules Don’t Apply and will then start The Raging Storm.

I am finishing Fair Land, Fair Land by A. B. Guthrie and it's one of those books that I don't want to see the end of! I am just starting Postscript to Poison by Dorothy Bowers.

I'm currently rereading Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier. I forgot how incredibly slow-paced it is, but I like it nonetheless!

I have moved on to Dear Teacher by Jack Sheffield which are humorous observations about his teaching years at a small school in North Yorkshire. I am also reading These Silent Woods by Kimmi Cunningham Grant, a thriller.

I've been listening to The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier and enjoying it so much that I've been taking a short walk after supper to fit in a little more listening time in addition to my morning walk.

I'm reading Simon the Coldheart, a Georgette Heyer I hadn't read because it's set in the 1400s rather than my favourite Georgian/Regency/Victorian eras. So far, it's about battles.

I finished reading Mirror of Our Sorrows (Les Enfants du Disastre #3; by Pierre Lemaitre; translated from the French by Frank Wynne) while I was on the road and a picked up a short story by Ray Bradbury for the last puddle-jumper home, The Scythe (by Ray Bradbury).

Now I'm reading H.M.S. Surprise (Aubrey/Maturin #3; by Patrick O'Brian); and expect to finish listening to Blitz (The Rookery #3; by Daniel O’Malley; narrated by Moira Quirk) by the end of the month.

Just finished Marry in Haste by Anne Gracie, a refreshing palate cleanser (will definitely continue with the series!), and am now starting Richard Osman's latest, The Last Devil to Die.

Currently reading When He Was Wicked by Julia Quinn.

Started The Jasmine throne, and 100 pages in, I am not quite sure its worth my while - it is not bad, but it is the first in a series, and right now I don’t think it is good enough to pick up book two.

I have been reading I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou's autobiography of her early years and she captures the feelings and emotions of her childhood in a memorable way. I have also just started Pearls Before Swine by Margery Allingham, the 12th in her Albert Campion series.

For ScaredyKIT (haunted house) I'm reading A Skeleton in the Family by Leigh Perry, a BB from LittleTaiko. It's amazing how Perry makes a skeleton a credible character in this fun series. I'm really enjoying it. It would also fit this month's MysteryKIT because the protagonist is an adjunct college professor.

I am reading the last book in The Novel of Ferrara, The Smell of Hay. Also reading The Devil Loves Me for the ClassicsCAT and GeoCAT (a week early) and Melbourne and Mars for Victober (also a week early).

I just finished Birder She Wrote and am currently reading Murder at the Peking Opera.

Since my last time here I've finished Death in Ecstasy by Ngaio Marsh and finished listening to The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier.

I'm really enjoying Go As a River.

Finished listening to Blitz (The Rookery #3; by Daniel O’Malley; narrated by Moira Quirk) last night and;
Started Master of the Senate (The Years of Lyndon Johnson #4; by Robert A. Caro; narrated by Grover Gardner). The latter is actually a re-listen; but the first time was when it was first published— and while I remember thinking it was amazing and should be required reading for any poli-sci majors, a refresher is definitely needed as I continue with the series.

I'm rereading Mary Stewart's Madam, Will You Talk?, which is one of my favorites by her.

Almost done with The Fifth Season, by N K Jemisin. It's been a really good read so far. Great blend of post-apocalyptic sci-fi and fantasy.

I have quite a few books that I would like to finish this month, but we're having a houseguest and a family wedding this weekend so I might not finish everything. I'm working on The Last Devil to Die and This Other Eden.

I am finishing off the month with Copper River by William Kent Krueger. As always, I am enjoying both the writing and the story of this excellent series.

I've made an early start on the October ClassicsCAT and GeoCAT with two classic mysteries by Margaret Millar. Next up are Vanish in an Instant by Margaret Millar and God Speed the Night by Dorothy Salisbury Davis.

I finished Murder at the Peking Opera which had a disappointing ending. I also finished Mrs. Porter Calling which has a thoroughly unlikable publisher who takes over and makes changes to a women's magazine.

I've begun The Passion of the Purple Plumeria by Lauren Willig, the 10th Pink Carnation book.

I just picked up a hold from the library - Amazing Grace Adams by Fran Littlewood.

Just finished I have some questions for you by Rebecca Makkai.
Kind of interesting from a zeitgeist point of view (at least as a non-american), but not that much of a thriller/mystery

I finished 2 in the MysteryKit challenge (both set in colleges/universities): Murder Past Due and The Maidens. I loved them both and glad to get my head in mystery space instead of solely in sci-fi/fantasy.

Also slogged my way through Phantom of the Opera. Glad they made a movie/Broadway show/movie of it cuz wow. Just not anything like I was expecting.
