Luther's Catechism: The Small Catechism of Dr. Martin Luther and an Exposition for Children and Adults Written in Contemporary English (Revised) (original 1529; edition 1998)by Martin LutherWritten for the 450th anniversary of Luther's Small Catechism. It contains a short history of the catechism, how the catechism came to America, and the illustrations are from early versions of the catechism in Luther's day. Interesting book that was used in my confirmation class. While I read it decades after confirmation, I found it interesting that the message seemed to be one of loving everyone and not on being in some ways superior to any other form of Christianity or any one for that matter. There are a few things I disagree with and some contradictions, but this made me feel like I understood the faith more. The 1943 edition of Luther’s Small Catechism was used by confirmation classes for many years. The first 30 pages are Luther’s Small catechism, written more in the language of King James. The second part which is in question and answer form also uses King James to back up its explanations. A copy can be found on the library shelves under the number 238.41/Sho Kuske’s Luther’s Catechism which was used for many years since 1982 is written in two parts. “The first part of this book is a translation of the Small Catechism which Luther wrote in German is 1529. The second part of this book is an… explanation of what Luther wrote.” “In the explanation, each part of Luther’s Small Catechism is explained in a question and answer form. After each question there are Scripture passages which give the Bible’s answer to the question. The words in italics in each passage indicate the part of the passage which is mst important for answering the question. The answer merely summarizes what the Scriptures teach.” Originally published by the Picture Catechism Committee in 1983 for the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s birth, The Small catechism: little book of questions and answers is a pocket book. The cover reads God tells us about Himself. It explains in pictures the Commandments, the Creed, prayer, baptism, confession, and communion. It also talks about worship, calendar, duty, hymns, prayers and Word. This little book can be found on the library shelves with other books on the catechism under the number 238.41/Lut. Luther's Catechism was given to me in the summer of 1957 (58?) by Pastor Hulls of the Lutheran Church in Riverhead. It, together with "Catechetical Helps" had a profound impact on my formative religious beliefs as a young adolescent. It is a part of my German Protestant heritage and represents the faith of many of my ancestors. Although I was raised in a religious home, I had an unfulfilled yearning for God in my life and felt the need for a more rational theology. For me this was the beginning of my search for truth that eventually found fulfillment the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. |
