Praying with Jane: 31 Days Through the Prayers of Jane Austen by Rachel Dodge offers readers a daily devotional based on the three known prayers written by Jane Austen. Each prayer receives ten or eleven days of attention, effectively immersing the reader into the prayer.

Having recently reread Pride & Prejudice, I was delighted to start into Praying with Jane. Each devotional entry begins with an examination of a portion of one of Jane’s prayers. Jane’s personal life and literary works appear often as the author brings together Austen’s prayer and the devotional thought. All six of Austen’s published novels are referenced in various points. Naturally, many Biblical principles and Scriptures were included. The second section offers a brief invitation to pray that encourages personal introspection and honesty. Lastly, a pre-composed prayer leads the reader in communion with God through prayer.

Two of my favorite devotional entries in Praying with Jane were: (1) Every Good and Perfect Gift (Pg. 39) which focused on thankfulness. (2) A Benevolent Spirit (Pg. 77) which encouraged generosity toward others. This book spoke to me as it offered reminders of God’s love as well as instruction on the Christian life. I highly recommend Praying with Jane: 31 Days Through the Prayers of Jane Austen to Jane Austen fans. It has a permanent home on my bookcase and I expect to read it again in the future.

This book touched my heart in so many ways! My love for God and my love for Jane Austen is met with a lovely book filled with Scripture and wonderful quotes from the Jane Austen books.

The cover of this book is so beautiful and the inside even more so with it's beautiful writing and faith-filled pages. I really liked the introduction and how Rachel gives us a glimpse into the heart of Jane. Then there are three beautiful prayers written by Jane Austen dispersed throughout the book. These prayers touched my heart so much! Her eloquent words and reverence for God are so beautiful!

However, it is Rachel's writing that really drew me in and inspired me. She writes not only about Jane and her writing, but brings it all together with Scripture in a wonderful way. This book touches my woman's heart and gives me a longing for God and His Word. I love a book that makes my quiet time with God more meaningful.

I love that this book focuses on prayer. Each day starts with a beautiful quote then a devotional focusing on Jane, her faith, and Scripture. We then have an invitation to pray, then a final prayer for the day. Each day then has a Scripture that focuses on what we have read and learned. Prayer is the main focus on this book and that is so important and has made a real difference in my quiet time prayers.

I love this book, as I'm sure you can tell. This is a wonderful book for any woman looking for a deeper prayer life and, for the Jane Austen fan, this book is a must have! I highly recommend this book and give it 5 out of 5 stars.

In this 31 day devotional you will explore Jane Austen’s personal prayers that were written during her evening prayer. By reading and studying these prayers, you will feel as if you are getting to know Jane and her faith. Scriptures are used throughout the devotions to bring Jane’s prayers to light. Even though it is a devotional, it is written as such that anyone can read and gain understanding and insight into Jane’s faith journey. You also do not need to be a devoted reader of Austen’s works (although who wouldn’t be) in order to be encouraged and inspired by the words that are so eloquently broken down and presented. At the end of each devotion is a reflection and prayer that will inspire you daily in your faith. Whether you are an avid Jane Austen fan, simply looking for a devotional or just interested in learning about Jane’s faith, this book is highly recommended. Such an elegant, joyful read that matches Jane’s writing style!

*Thank you to NetGalley & Bethany House Publishers for my e-copy in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.* ( )
