The fourth in the series, describing the first months of Herriot's marriage, until his call-up to the army. As good as the preceding ones (unless you buy the Kindle version, in which the number of typos or scannos is exorbitant). ( )

This is the fourth book in this wonderful series, and we see James and Helen still living in their rooftop aerie above the clinic. Everything in Derbyshire is about the same, but the difference is that all three vets will be leaving shortly to join the war effort. James knows that once the war is over, and when everyone comes back, things will be changed forever. The Yorkshire countryside will still be there, and all the wonderful people and animals, but the world will not look the same. This thought makes it bittersweet for James as he makes his final rounds before he is called up. All the wonderful stories are here, but there is a touch of pathos in them. As usual the stories are warm and funny and utterly delightful. I have been really enjoying making my leisurely way through them. I still have four lovely books left to read, and am looking forward to disappearing into them and escapong from this crazy, mixed up world. ( )

Herriot is a young veterinary in the Yorkshire Dales of England who has written many books about his experiences caring for the large and small animals of the eccentric folks who live there. Most of the stories are humourous and in some of episodes describe made me laughed out loud. The time period for this collection is the just before World War II and Harriot is waiting for his call up papers which he receives in the last story.

His books have been turned into a very funny film and TV series both entitled All Creatures Great and Small which is well worth viewing. ( )

This one seemed sadder than the others, mentions of the war as well as changes taking place in animal care. Makes me wonder what the next ones will be like, I like reading about 'the old ways'.

Liked the chapters with lambing - there were more of them than in previous books ^_^ but missed Tricki-Woo. :-(

Not so much Siegfried in this one but I loved the chapter when Helen got pregnant and he gave James £50 in his own special way.

Took longer to read because I had to get an assignment written. ( )
