I did read this series, but since the author does not support anonymity for readers (only authors are allowed such luxury, apparently), I am removing my rating. ( )

In a way this book was better than the first in the trilogy. It was maybe more exciting, but I would have liked there to be more Beaty's point of views than Tristan's. On okay book though and it got better towards the end and now I can't wait to read the next book. ( )

It is between a 4 and 5 star. Have thought it either way. It is a great book to read, but I do think that the whole story with the severe punishments is all going very fast. At the beginning of the book they have already received all the worst you can imagine. It doesn't leave any imagination left during the story. And the quantity of slaves is overwhelming which made the whole story a bit too overdone ( )

I came across references to these books for years, my interest was piqued. I came across a copy of the second volume in the trilogy and decided to read the novel. I will say that Rice can write well, a fairly simple story told entertainingly, however, bdsm is not my thing. Personally, I like to keep things simple and to the point. ( )

Review:

"Beauty's Punishment" by Anne Rice is a sequel from book one: The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty" where we find it is another 'steamy erotica' read of how 'Beauty and Prince Tristan' survive in 'The Village' that is told to you in first and third person.

Now, let me stop here and say if you haven't read the first book and not open to erotica, bdsm, fantasy, fairy tales, sexuality ....STOP! The read wouldn't be of interest at all to you. This novel is not for the faint of heart so be aware of this. OK, continuing on.."Beauty's Punishment" is of her being "punished for having rebelled against Prince Tristan....where she is auctioned, captivated and subjected to some of the most erotic, cruel and tantalizing games of domination and submission." I will stop and this point and say to find out any more about this read you must pick up "Beauty's Punishment" to see how this author puts it all together for the reader in this fairy tale. Ms. Rice works really well at illustrating all of this to the reader even presenting some twist and turns really making this a intriguing read. Believe me when I say you once you start will be kept reading just to see what is coming next. (At least it was for me). It really amazes me how this author was able to recraft this fairy tale into a adult fantasy series...leaving me only to say WOW!

If you are into this read and one who enjoys what Ms. Rice has to offer in her Trilogy reads ...Bravo....Would I recommend this to you? ...only YES if this type of book is of interest to YOU! ( )

Beauty's Punishment is the sequel to The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty. The second in the trilogy and just as full of bondage and kink as the first.

It has been almost a year since I read The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty and I figured, why not read the next in the series. I can't really say I loved the first but I was intrigued in finding out where our poor Beauty's adventure would take her.

**Some spoilers**
We know at the end of the first book, Beauty finally stands up to the Prince and ends up being banished and carted off to the village along with rebel Prince Tristan. A much worse fate than being spanked, tied up, and being the sexual playthings of the royals... now they'll be done all that and more but by the working class citizens in the village. They'll have to endure labor at the hands of new masters/mistresses and enjoy none of the pampering they received in the castle.

**Spoiler free**
Here we have alternating chapters between Beauty and Tristan. Beauty almost felt like a secondary character in this one - since Tristan's chapters were a lot more graphic and intense than hers. Since I already knew what to expect, I wasn't surprised by the BDSM scenes, but nevertheless I still read in a sort of repulsed/fascinated way. Does that even make sense? I'm curious to see where the story will go. What will happen to Beauty next?

In the end, there were some aspects of the story that I did like and I found it interesting, if somewhat disturbing. Ms. Roquelaure/Rice really knows how to push the boundaries - she makes you feel uncomfortable and has you questioning these characters motives. But at the same time she explains the mindset of a sex slave - why they endure their "punishments" without trying to escape.

My final say: refrain from reading it in public since you don't want anyone to question why you have a permanent blush on your face, not to mention the constant looking over your shoulder to make sure no one is peeking. This is definitely not your everyday erotic novel and it is not for the faint of heart. If you're into smut, and really, every once in a while, it doesn't hurt, then this is by far, one of the smuttiest books I've read.

Hmm... What to say? A nasty, dirty novel. However, better then "The Claiming". ( )

Beauty leaves the castle in order to fulfill a period of service in the village. Prince Tristan joins her there and the reader is privy to his experiences as well.
Tristan's chapters are written in the first person, while the rest of the book is told in the third person. It's a little disconcerting, but not confusing at all.
The final chapter of the tale was quite compelling and really left a reader excited for the sequel. ( )

I loved this second book. It was very erotic. Not only do you learn what happeneds to Beauty but you get to learn about Tristan aswell and his punishment. Its just like the book says; its a story about disciplin, love and surrender. You follow Beauty's story and learn what leads to her kidnapping from the village. This book was great and well worth the read. Keep in mind if you MUST be into BDSM and completely open minded about sexual experiences in order to enjoy this wonderful book. I completely LOVED it. This sequel to "The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty", the first of Anne Rice's elegantly written volumes of erotica, continues her explicit, teasing exploration of the psychology of human desire.

Beauty, having indulged in a secret and forbidden infatuation with the rebellious slave Prince Tristan, is sent away from the Satyricon-like world of the castle. Once again Rice's fabulous tale of pleasure and pain dares to explore the most primal and well-hidden desires of the human heart.

"Beauty's Punishment" is the continuation of "The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty", Anne Rice's erotic retelling of the popular fairy tale. In the second installment, Beauty is punished for having rebelled against the Prince. She, along with Prince Tristan, an insubordinate slave and object of Beauty's desire, is auctioned, captivated and subjected to the most erotic, tantalizing and cruel games of domination and submission.

In the village Beauty and some others are auctioned to the civilians who transform them into working slaves : they have to work, the boys are turned into horses or poneys, and their masters and mistresses are degrading them and punishing them into a new stage of submission. They develop their dependence on this enslavement to the point of getting in love with the punishment and the punishing masters or mistresses. At this moment they cannot even imagine themselves leaving or escaping from that degrading position because their psyche has been made dependent on it, because their intellect has been centered on it.

Their whole vision of the world and of themselves in the world holds only because of this enslavement that becomes the cornerstone of it, the apex of any intelligent or sensual reaction and action. They need the punishment to remain structured. Without the punishment they collapse into sheer non-existence, a scattered jigsaw puzzle whose pieces cannot be set back into any kind of a pattern.

Again, Anne Rice does an excellent job in illustrating the psychological implications of the human desire. She also does a splendid job in taking the course of the story to unexpected turns...

There are various differences between "The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty" and its sequel. In "Beauty's Punishment", the language is less fanciful and more explicit. Also, Prince Tristan is the focal character in this book -- thus, making Beauty seem as though she were a secondary character at times.

I loved all of the hard chores these spoiled royalties had to perform. With Tristan the whole book has a softness that lessens the grit. ( )

The second book in the Beauty trilogy, Beauty has been sentenced to The Village. She has been warned of dire consequences, horrible punishments, and she can't wait. The writing is charming, the sex is stylized and fairly erotic, and the story...well, who really cares about the story? ( )

The first installation on the series, The Claiming Of Sleeping Beauty, was very good. It was novel and captivating. It also ends in such a way that the I couldn't wait to start Beauty's Punishment, the next installment.

I should have waited, or put it off all together.

The best summary I can manage without wasting too much of my time is to say this: the continuation is trite, boring, uninspired at best, infuriatingly incompetent at worst.

Beauty being a petulant twit in the first book is understandable- she's new and used to being treated like a princess. How she manages to not wise up and quit the babe in the woods routine is beyond me. It's certainly not sexy, just ridiculous.

Do yourself a favor and stop with the first book. ( )

This whole series is excellent. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for something a little naughty...if you're a bit of a stick in the mud, I would probably skip this series. ( )

If you're interested in erotica or fairy tales, pick this up. This one's a tiny bit repetitive if you've read the first one, but not badly. ( )

An interesting take on the world of erotica and bsdm by rice. ( )
  pumper21 | Feb 5, 2007 |
I don't find Rice's three-part foray into erotica to be especially compelling. Aside from a few titillating episodes, there is far too much spanking and whining and little else - I actually found myself getting BORED and frustrated, wanting to scream if I read Beauty's exclaiming ONE MORE TIME "Oh, I'm a bad, bad little girl"! I realize that in a work of this nature one should probably not expect much as far as plot and character development go, and as a reader who typically looks for those things in a work of fiction, I found these books quite difficult to get through. I would have to disagree with the comment on the back cover which asserts that in these novels Rice masterfully plumbs the psychological depths of human sexuality. ( )
