Established in 1998, Ubisoft Milan is the creative studio that developed Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

About us

Established in 1998, over the years Ubisoft Milan has contributed to the development of some of the most important Ubisoft IPs such as Rayman®, Beyond Good & Evil®, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell® and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six®. After having pioneered motion-controls with titles such as MotionSports™ and Raving Rabbids® Alive and Kicking, Ubisoft Milan has collaborated to four installments of the Just Dance® series and has applied its skills to Assassin’s Creed® III Liberation, Assassin’s Creed® IV Black Flag® and Assassin’s Creed® Rogue. In recent years, the collaboration with Ubisoft Paris has led Ubisoft Milan to contribute to Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® Wildlands and Breakpoint, and to conceive and work in partnership on Mario + Rabbids® Kingdom Battle - a Nintendo Switch® exclusive turn-based combat adventure, featuring a team up of iconic Nintendo and Ubisoft characters that join forces to save the Mushroom Kingdom. After the global success of Mario + Rabbids® Kingdom Battle, Ubisoft Milan has worked on a massive DLC of the game featuring Donkey Kong, one of the most appreciated Nintendo® characters of all time. In October 2022, we released a new chapter in the Mario + Rabbids® saga: the critically acclaimed Sparks of Hope, and we will support the game with 3 DLCs that will be released throughout 2023.

“When I started making my first little games, I discovered that I enjoyed not just playing games but also creating them”. Federico Ciardi, Senior Gameplay Programmer, has always been very passionate about video games and computer science, so “this made me want to pursue a career in the games industry, where I could use my computer science skills to make fun and immersive experiences for players. After completing a post-graduate course in game development, I had the chance to intern at Ubisoft Milan”, more than 4 years ago. “During my internship, I was truly impressed by the working environment and the exciting projects I had the opportunity to contribute to. And even if I had limited knowledge of the existing code base and the processes of a large organization, I was able to put in my best effort and make significant progress!”. Here are some of the features he worked on during the development of Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope!

“I vividly remember the wonderful sensation of receiving the first task here at Ubisoft Milan: I had to animate one of the main characters of the game. This character was Rabbid Luigi, and I immediately felt a strong connection. I saw a lot of myself in him, probably because of his way of experiencing moments with enthusiasm and seeing things through the eyes of a child. It was love at first sight!”. A bonding that Sofia Conciarelli, 3D Gameplay Animator that joined us in 2022, feels not only with the beloved character, but also with animation: “When I began studying animation in college, I initially had the idea of creating cartoons, especially 2D ones. However, the more I studied, the more I became interested in the world of 3D graphics. Though I still harbored a desire to participate in cartoon development, fate led me to my first work experience as an animator in a video games company, specifically as a gameplay animator. From that experience, I had no doubts: I would continue in the video game world and stay here! Having loved both math and art since childhood, I believe gameplay animation combines them perfectly”. When choosing what to show us for this social media format, there were no doubts: take a look at her Rabbid Luigi animation!

“As a 3D artist, I'm drawn to the gaming industry for its ability to craft immersive virtual worlds. Collaborating with fellow creatives and shaping the artistic evolution of games is a daily thrill for me”. There’s no better way to introduce Michele Garzia, 3D Artist in Ubisoft Milan since 2020. A company he joined because “Ubisoft is renowned for its innovation and passion for high-quality video games, and working at their Milan studio would have given me, and still gives me, the opportunity to contribute to significant projects. I'm excited to bring my skills to the table for such a respected company in the gaming industry!”. He started with something easier: “My first task was for the game Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. I still remember having to create many vases, and I still recall the excitement of seeing them in the game once they were finished!”. But look at the incredible environments and characters he crafted during these years!

Selvaggia Salvati’s picture says it all: “I joined Ubisoft Milan because I wanted to be trained to become a cool Assassin!”. Jokes aside (but she wrote that with a question mark, so take it with a pinch of salt…) “I joined the team because after the job interviews, I knew I found the right place where I could grow as a person and as a professional, learning from experts in the various areas of game development, while working in a very creative and friendly environment”. And after more than 5 years she is still here, as a full-fledged Producer. It’s been a while since her first day with us, when “I didn’t eat breakfast because I was so excited and eager to start… and I spent most of the morning starving. But I also had so many new colleagues to talk to and meet. Lots of questions and processes to learn. Everything went by very fast, and I couldn’t wait to get back the next day!”. Check the gallery for some additional tips for future Producers, but here’s a key suggestion for them: “It's not just about hitting milestones, building roadmaps and balancing budgets; how you lead, communicate, and resolve conflicts matters just as much”.

Some of our team members are Magic: The Gathering hardcore fans and players, so when the Assassin’s Creed set was released, decks magically appeared in our office! They also met in the evening for a couple of matches, and the winner got some extra coveted booster packs! Thanks Wizards for the gifts!
