Small hearts are a type of item featured in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, its Western conversion Super Mario Bros. 2, and its reissues. A small heart appears whenever the player's character defeats eight enemies, and collecting one restores an empty slot of the player character's Health Meter. If a small heart is collected while the player character is at full health, collecting it has no effect. Mushrooms somewhat serve as a stronger variation of small hearts as they not only restore the entire health of the playable character but also add an extra slot to the Health Meter.
