Shannon Hitchcock Why did Shannon love this book?

Lucky Broken Girl is about overcoming adversity and finding hope.

Ruthie Mizrahi and her family immigrated from Cuba to New York City. Immigration brings lots of new challenges, especially learning a new language. Ruthie is adjusting fairly well until sheā€™s in a car accident and breaks her leg. As part of her recovery, Ruthie gets a body cast that stretches all the way from her chest to her toes.

I read this book because my sister, Robin, was also in a car accident and ended up in the same kind of cast as Ruthie. My sisterā€™s accident was the inspiration for my novel. I was curious to see how two different authors handled the same storyline.

Book cover of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Laura Giebfried Author Of None Shall Sleep

From my list on mystery that takes you into the characters head.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™ve been intrigued with the mind for as long as I can remember. As a child, I imagined shrinking myself down and worming my way into other peopleā€™s brains to discover how their thoughts differed from mine. When I realized that was impossible, I started creating characters and imagining how they would think, react, and feel. This led to writing novels and motivated me to get my bachelorā€™s in abnormal psychology and my masterā€™s in forensic psychology. Now, with an innate curiosity for the mind and a background in how it works, I find myself drawn to reading and writing books that take me into charactersā€™ heads.

Laura's book list on mystery that takes you into the characters head

Laura Giebfried Why did Laura love this book?

A book rarely brings me to tears. I didnā€™t know what to expect when I first picked up this one. The main thing I love about this book is that it takes you right into the head of the main character, who happens to be a very precocious nine-year-old boy. Outwardly, the main character is on an adventure to solve a mystery, but inwardly, heā€™s on a journey to come to terms with his fatherā€™s death.

The protagonistā€“who, on the surface, is nothing like meā€“made me feel and address things I had not come to terms with in my life. I felt myself struggling along with the character, and then I ultimately began to heal with him, too. Itā€™s a powerful, tragic, yet absolutely hilarious story that allowed me to forget myself for a while before realizing that I was learning about myself the entire time I read it.

Book cover of TimeRiders

Sean McMahon Author Of Fir Lodge

From my list on time travel you need to read yesterday.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™ve always been fascinated by time travel as a framing device in stories. Having spent my childhood hoovering up anything I could get my hands on in both the science fiction and straight-up fiction genres, an unexpected byproduct was that I found myself becoming increasingly fascinated with merging the two, eventually wrapping my head around what it would mean if time itself became more than just a construct of our own creation. Asking myself regularly the question; what if it was terrain? It took me thirty-four years to translate all of those ideas into a solid hook for a book. And a further four years to turn that hook into a fully-fledged series.

Sean's book list on time travel you need to read yesterday

Sean McMahon Why did Sean love this book?

I adored this entire series from beginning to end, but Iā€™m recommending Book 1 in the series becauseā€¦well, itā€™s the start and also my favourite. This series launched all the way back in 2010 and even though itā€™s written for a young adult teen audience, itā€™s so well written and a joy to just kick back with on a Sunday afternoon with a cuppa.

The characterisation is brilliant, has some brilliant set pieces, and it has that Harry Potter kind of vibe with young protagonists forced into growing up a little too fast and getting to wield an altogether different kind of magic. Thereā€™s so much to love, as you learn all the rules and quirks of this universe.

Gibby Haynes from the band Butthole Surfers wrote a YA novel about a boy and his supernatural dog? You had me at hello!

If youā€™re familiar with the musician, this book is as wild as youā€™d imagine and then some. Saying anything more would spoil the fun.

Itā€™s a trip worth taking, with enough heart to leave you fulfilled beyond the lightweight Fear & Loathing vibe throughout. I didnā€™t always understand what was going on, but I also didnā€™t want it to end.

Book cover of The Princess Diaries

Alyssa J. Montgomery Author Of A Spanish Seduction

From my list on makeover romances.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™m an Australian USA Today bestselling romance author who writes contemporary romance and uses the pen name Alyssa James to write medieval romance. I think the makeover trope resonates with me because although Iā€™m no beauty queen now, I was definitely an ugly duckling in my teens. For reasons best known to him, my father insisted on close-cropped hair, and financial circumstances dictated out-of-style hand-me-down clothing. After university, I found my own style, but it wasnā€™t until I was accepted as an international flight attendant that I believed that I couldnā€™t be all that ugly if Qantas employed me!

Alyssa J. Montgomery Why did Alyssa love this book?

Cinderella was probably the first romance I ever encountered where a makeover took place, but the second most memorable from my youth was definitely this story.

Miaā€™s journey to the throne in Genovia is such a roller coaster. Resistant to the initial plan, I love Miaā€™s growth, and I adore her personality. A bit of a misfit with geeky looks (prior to the makeover, of course!), I love how engaging her character is, and I love the uplifting laugh-out-loud moments that leave me with a light, feel-good vibe.

I also love that she ends up falling for someone whoā€™s been a constant support in her life and who knows and loves Mia for herself rather than her royal title.

Book cover of More Happy Than Not

Darren Campo Author Of Alex Detail's Revolution

From my list on young love confronting cosmic forces like UFOs and life after death.

Why am I passionate about this?

I love people who are totally lost because they are on the brink of their greatest discoveryā€“their true nature. Even as a little boy I remember seeing that everyone has a purpose in life, but that is hidden to them. I have always felt that every step of the way, life seems to be a little off-track. But through authentic stories, I came to an understanding that right now, everyone is doing great things with their lives, even if they canā€™t see it.

Darren's book list on young love confronting cosmic forces like UFOs and life after death

Darren Campo Why did Darren love this book?

I love the main characterā€™s horrible, deep, dark depression. Aaronā€™s life as a kid in the projects of New York City means he canā€™t be gay. So many bad things happen to Aaron that he wants to get a procedure to erase parts of his memory.

I love that just as it seems like Aaronā€™s life, his friends, his romantic life, his mom and brother, all seem to be somewhat in balance, everything goes to shit and his life is worse than he thought. His father, who he thought died of a heart attack, actually killed himself in the bathtub they use every day.

In the first version of the book, the ending is so sad and depressing, the author went back and added a new chapter just to give me some hope for Aaron. The updated ending is amazing.

Jessica Salina Author Of Play With Fire

From my list on superhero books that you wonā€™t want to put down.

Why am I passionate about this?

When I was eight years old, I walked into a movie theater to see Spider-Man and walked out forever obsessed with superheroes. Specifically, I saw him kiss Mary-Jane with his mask on while hanging upside down and my tastes never changed in 20 years. Now, when not writing, I cosplay from my favorite comics, video games, and anime with my husband, who I met at a comic-con while dressed as Gwenpool (he was Symbiote Spider-Manā€”see, I told you my tastes never changed).

This coming-of-age YA/NA romance featuring college sophomore Astrid and her superhero boyfriend is a heartfelt read.

It features a woman learning to live with her PTSD while juggling being a superheroā€™s girlfriend.

The premise of Adam Silveraā€™s book, They Both Die at the End is a truly genius way to get your readers to connect with the characters.

In the world of this book, basically everything is the same as our world, except they have a technology called DeathCast that calls someone the day they are going to die to give them one last chance to live life to the fullest and say goodbye to their loved ones.

In this book, Rufus and Mateo both get the call. These two strangers get connected on an app that helps those dying to find someone to spend their final day with. It was so fulfilling to get to know Rufus and Mateo as they got to know each other. Even though I went in knowing the bookā€™s premise, I still hoped things could somehow change.

From my list on YA contemporary romances that take you abroad.

Why am I passionate about this?

I write romantic comedies for readers who want adventure in the great wide somewhere and canā€™t wait until the next time they hear the words bon voyage! Even as a young, midwestern farm girl, I always had a passion for languages and a strong desire to travel. As soon I flew the coop and went to college, I made friends with students from all over the world. Eventually, I followed my travel plans, learned to speak three languages, and now canā€™t decide whether to adopt London or Paris as my European hometown.

Kristina Miranda Why did Kristina love this book?

This charming parallel universe story is like two contemporary realistic novels in one. Fifteen-year-old Summer Everette makes a choice at the beginning of the book (no spoilers, here!) that will either take her to France or keep her in upstate New York for the summer. So why not see what would happen in both worlds?

This book has all the elements I love. A relatable protagonist, two adorable love interests, and tons of heart. Add the French countryside element and voila! Parfait!
