Hades: Closing the game - do we lose progress? Hades guide, tips

This page of the Hades guide answers the question of whether turning off the game means losing progress within a given playthrough. We also tell you how to protect yourself.

Last update: 06 September 2021

This page of the guide to Hades explains whether closing the game means you loose progress. This can be important information in terms of the desire to spend shorter sessions with the game, not planning to devote a large amount of time to it.

A separate page titled Saving the game - is it possible? describes the topic of saving the progress of the ongoing struggle, along with explanations on how does it work.

Gameplay in Hades works in a slightly different way than other roguelike games - Hades: Closing the game - do we lose progress? - FAQ - Hades Guide

Gameplay in Hades works in a slightly different way than other roguelike games. Here are the most important assumptions:

  1. The game keeps track of the progress in each newly visited chamber. If you close the game, you can resume the game at the same location where it ended. There is no obligation to return to House of Hades when the game restarts. This means that you never have to stress about having to complete a particular run. You can end the game at any location and start the game at the same location, later. Even if you spend only a few minutes with the game at a time, you can still make some progress from such a session.
  2. After Zagreus' death, you will return to House of Hades by default (you can later unlock the method to protect yourself from death) and you will have to go through the available lands again. In this case, Hades is similar to other roguelike productions, forcing the need for repeated attempts to go through the game in order to improve your techniques and transfer selected items related to the development of the hero and his equipment to subsequent playthroughs.

More information about what can happen after the death of the hero along with tips on how to die less often can be found on the page Death - How to avoid it?.

If you have to close the game, always navigate to the pause menu and read when the last save file was created - we marked an example of this type of message in the attached screenshot - Hades: Closing the game - do we lose progress? - FAQ - Hades Guide

If you have to close the game, always navigate to the pause menu and read when the last save file was created - we marked an example of this type of message in the attached screenshot.

Always make sure that the information displayed indicates the saved progress less than 1 minute ago. If this is some prior record, then advance a little further to reach the next place for the save file to be updated (this may be, for example, the beginning of the exploration of a new chamber). Only then decide to close the game.
