System Shock Remake: How to avoid radiation and biological contamination? System Shock Remake guide, tips

Radiation can quickly deplete your health bar in System Shock Remake. Our guide explains how to use the antidote and how to get an environmental protection backpack for active radiation protection.

Last update: 26 May 2023

Radiation and biological contamination are one of the main environmental hazards encountered in System Shock Remake. On this page of our guide, we show how to deal with radiation and contamination encountered in the world, how to use Detox Universal Antidote, and what Wares (Environmental Protection Pack) helps with such obstacles. We also explain how Environmental Protection Pack works.

Contamination and its impact on the hero

The Citadel has areas with radiation or biological contaminations - System Shock Remake: How to avoid radiation and biological contamination? - FAQ - System Shock Remake Guide

The Citadel has areas with radiation or biological contaminations. Information about poisoning and negative impact on the hero's body appears in the upper right corner below the health and energy bars.

The stronger the contamination, the faster health points will be lost. You should be quick in locations with radiation. Effects of radiation or biological contamination slowly disappear after leaving the contaminated area. It doesn't wear off instantly and you may lose health points for some time.

Destroying barrels

You can destroy barrels with poisonous substances - System Shock Remake: How to avoid radiation and biological contamination? - FAQ - System Shock Remake Guide

You can destroy barrels with poisonous substances. Use any firearm (e.g. minipistol) to shoot them from a safe distance. Once a barrel is destroyed, wait a moment for the area to become safe for exploration.

Unfortunately, this trick will not work in, e.g. bigger locations with radiation (such as in the Reactor). You will have to use an Environmental Protection Pack, which we have described down the page.

Detox Universal Antidote

Detox Universal Antidote is a consumable and is spent after activation - System Shock Remake: How to avoid radiation and biological contamination? - FAQ - System Shock Remake Guide

Detox Universal Antidote is a consumable and is spent after activation. You can find these items during exploration or buy them from Transdermal Dispensers. Make sure to always have at least 2-3 in stock.

The antidote heals all negative contamination effects instantly, stopping the health depletion. You should use one after each leaving of a contaminated zone.

Environmental Protection Pack V1 - biological contamination

Environmental Protection Pack allows limiting the contamination to a minimum, but only the later versions of the Ware offer full protection from all kinds of contamination.

V1 of the module is found on Storage Deck. Look for it in Storage 9 room in the eastern part of the level. To access Storage 9, you need to input the right code (838) at the terminal (a part of the code is obtained from Stashed Pack audiolog).

Inside the room, there is Environmental Protection Pack V1 on the desk and it will become a part of your Neural Interface once installed - System Shock Remake: How to avoid radiation and biological contamination? - FAQ - System Shock Remake Guide

From now on, you can activate the Environmental Protection Pack manually (either from the Ware menu or alternatively by assigning a keyboard shortcut to it) - System Shock Remake: How to avoid radiation and biological contamination? - FAQ - System Shock Remake Guide

From now on, you can activate the Environmental Protection Pack manually (either from the Ware menu or alternatively by assigning a keyboard shortcut to it).

V1 of the Environmental Protection Pack protects only from biological contamination. This type of contamination appears less often. Unfortunately, you still need to watch out for radiation.

The disadvantage of active protection is that it requires Energy to operate. Make sure to have a lot of it available, especially when entering locations with heavy contamination (faster energy depletion).

Environmental Protection Pack V2 - radiation and biological contamination

The main reason to get the V2 pack is the additional radiation protection (protection against biological contamination will remain active). You need to make enough progress in the main story to unlock access to this ware.

You need to get to the Executive deck - System Shock Remake: How to avoid radiation and biological contamination? - FAQ - System Shock Remake Guide

You need to get to the Executive deck. There you can find 3 train cars that travel to different Groves. You have to visit:

  1. Alpha Grove;
  2. Beta Grove - there is a high biological contamination in this area, so use pack V1 and quickly reach the mission objective;
  3. Delta Grove.

In each of the 3 Groves, your task is to reach the Safety Interlocks room and use the Grove Jettison Enable Switch (example in the picture).

Reach the south-western part of the Executive deck (next to the place where you fought Cyborg Diego, near the Systems Engineering elevator) - System Shock Remake: How to avoid radiation and biological contamination? - FAQ - System Shock Remake Guide

Reach the south-western part of the Executive deck (next to the place where you fought Cyborg Diego, near the Systems Engineering elevator). There, you will find the Master Jettison Enable Control. After the failed interaction, you will learn about the problem with the damaged relay.

You must return to the Maintenance deck - System Shock Remake: How to avoid radiation and biological contamination? - FAQ - System Shock Remake Guide

You must return to the Maintenance deck. Visit Repair Bay near the elevator to find the Diagnostic Report terminal. You will identify the problem and unlock the side areas - Alpha Maintenance, Beta Maintenance, Gamma Maintenance and Delta Maintenance.

By examining the side areas, you can make Level Security to drop below 45% (just destroying the cameras you encounter should be enough, but there are also computer nodes) - System Shock Remake: How to avoid radiation and biological contamination? - FAQ - System Shock Remake Guide

This will unlock Maintenance Office in Repair Bay in the southeast part of the map.

You will reach a room with a cyberspace terminal. Go to the next room and you will find the pack V2.

You can now negate much of the radiation after activating the pack. It also requires less power than the V1.
