This book is about the heart and it goes into the four meridians of the heart and how they make up the double aspect. Pericardium and San Jiao both make out the Outer heart, the exterior and it protects the heart while Small Intestine and Heart make up the inner heart, the interior. It is what makes us the person we show up in life as. It's beautifully done I feel. I was touched by the content and the translation was so much better.
In Ancient texts, it was said there are 6 fu and 5 Zang. Yet there are 6 Zang meridians. In that time, the Heart didn't have it's own acu points. All the needling one did was on the Pericardium meridian. That meridian basically, is the heart.
In school, we made such a big deal of the differences and how they are separate. This text talks about them as if they are one in the same. The Chinese are brilliant at taking opposite concepts to name a thing. The heart is inner and outer, invisible, and visible. All four meridians really are the heart. It's all one and the same. I guess Small intestine is still it's own system, but it still has so much to do with protecting the heart and directing heat out of it.
The book has some new ideas for me and new ways of looking at acupuncture and theory. I love studying the characters and even understanding some of the points better. A great little book. It didn't take me 7 years to year, Yahoo....more

It is a dream like state. The art is impressionist like and it evokes a sense of magic and anything can happen. The story takes place during the midsummer moon. The girl rides several animals. She takes a ride on a great snowy owl looking for the star tree. There is a little red Hare, a giant stag, a polar bear and lastly, a goose.
My niece gave this 3 stars. She said it was half good half not. She was not a fan of the art and yet I loved the art.

I just started at the beginning and after a week I finished it.
It's commentary on acupuncture's main text the Neijing of Huang Di - the yellow emperor. They focus on Spleen and Stomach. They go into the meaning of the characters so it helps me learn more characters. I learned quite a bit reading this and I'm glad I finally finished this.
This is for acupuncturist only, I would say, especially westerners trying to grasp what the culture meant when it was translated....more

Being present and taking a breath can help us with our emotions. This book takes this subject and easily make it accessible for young kids. Both kids enjoyed the book. They gave it 4 stars. The nephew is so wiggly that he has a hard time sitting still while the niece is able to. They both understood the concept of noticing what you are feeling. We got out stuffed animals and noticed how it felt on our hands. They had great experiences of what the sensations felt like. It was fun. ...more
This is what I needed to hear at this moment in my life. I did look over some of the reviews of this book and I saw many gave it 1 and 2 stars. Their This is what I needed to hear at this moment in my life. I did look over some of the reviews of this book and I saw many gave it 1 and 2 stars. Their complaint is that it does not give solid details for making money.
I see this book working on a spiritual level. Jen keeps saying raise your energy level and keep it high. She is not simply saying to quit and everything will be ok. She said, you have to have the faith and then put everything you have into it; make yourself uncomfortable and give everything to your idea.
She is working with the Universal laws here. I think my biggest take-away is the negotiating voice. It is always about small things. I plan to write 5 pages today and a voice inside says I could check facebook first. I do this all the time. I negotiate away what I really want.
In my past, I have had an issue with money and I push some opportunities and money away from me. I have issues I need to work out. Going to school and racking up the debt has been the biggest risk of my life and I feel it was the right choice. My heart lead me here and there is a path to pay off my debt if I don't get scared of being uncomfortable and letting people know I'm an acupuncturist. I am pretty shy until you get to know me. I must push past that.
She gives big examples of going for the big bucks, but sometimes its taking out student loans and going to school, or going to a workshop or joining the Kiwanis Club and meeting other people. Sometimes, it's simply talking to another person.
I thought the questions she asked were very important questions and what really drives us and what we really believe. We can be a victim or sabotage ourselves without even knowing it. There is a lot of inner work to happen to make outer goals happen. I do think our attitudes are important. Focusing on the stuff not working has never really helped me. It makes my life more difficult. This past year was tough and my attitude has made it brutal instead of just something I have to do.
Working with people's energy the way I have, money is such a primal part of us like it or not. I grew up thinking I hated money, but what I meant was that I hated that money drove things. I do like the freedom money can give a person, the freedom to live a fuller life. Money is really simply energy. It is that simple. I think I am seeing it more that way and it makes sense.
We need our energy to be used for life transformations. What we put out can pay dividends later. There are times we need to conserve energy, like in the winter, and times to spend, like the summer when it's time to have fun. Energy really is a form of currency as is money.
This book happened at the perfect time for me and it was the perfect message for me at this point. I am about to open a practice and I need to answer the questions she posed throughout the book.
If you are looking for a step by step process to getting rich, this probably isn't the book for you. If you want a guide to figure out your way of making money in the world and the attitudes of successful people, I think you will find this book useful and helpful. ...more

This is a fantastic book on translations from the text of the Huang Di NeiJing which was written about 200BC or around there. But that is when it was This is a fantastic book on translations from the text of the Huang Di NeiJing which was written about 200BC or around there. But that is when it was collected and written down. The knowledge is thousands of years older than that.
Father Larre and Elisabeth Rochat focus there translations on text and passages having to do with the amazing Kidneys in the body. These pair are the foundations of Yin and Yang. They are all about opposite. There is the hardness of bone and yet the softness of marrow. The hardness of teeth and the softness of hair. All these opposites are correspondences of the Kidney.
I appreciated the text talking about salt. There is salt in the sea, but the characters point to the salt from the Earth as being so important. When water dives down into the Earth, this is the time salt picks up these dual qualities.
There is a wonderful relationship between the Heart and Kidneys and the fire that is in Kidneys and how the two intertwine. I am now beginning to think of the Heart and Kidneys are two sides of one coin. They have so many similarities.
I find these books so helpful in my study of Chinese medicine. They are powerful and it really brings life to the medicine in a shocking new way. It brings clarity and understanding. Our ancient ancestors knew and understood so much. They really did.
I underlined a ton here, but I'm going to put only a few paragraphs here.
"The salty taste has the characteristic of softening, and too much injures the blood and leads to a dryness. We know very well that if you eat too much of the salty taste it makes you thirsty, this is said in the Ling Shu Chapter 63 and is a sign of the diminution of bodily liquids. According to Ling Shu chapter 63 the salty taste goes to the blood by affinity, and as a result there is stagnation and congealing of the blood. The same thing happens to the juices of the Stomach. But the sweet taste has the ability to increase the fluids in the body, particularly the Jin and the clear liquids produced by the Spleen."
Very well stated and it makes sense to me. Another
"One must also understand the function of the Kidneys at every level of activity of the organism: mastering water, keeping the liquids in the right proportion, retaining and drawing downwards, all the while guarding against the exaggeration of this movement that is so natural to them."
That seems important to know. Edema in the legs is too much exaggeration and water accumulates and that relationship with the heart is important here.
Last one: "When you are afraid either you yourself move away from the situation or things move downwards in you. The descending movement, which is proper to the kidneys, is exaggerated as an effect of fear, and continues to the point of losing essences. Fear also attacks the relationship between the Kidneys and the Heart. Injury to the spirits from fear and fright you can lose possession of yourself. The answer is reflective thought prevails over fear. This is the best way to overcome fear. "
This last piece of it helps explain the above: "When there is fear the essences withdraw and as a result the upper heater completely closes which means that the Qi returns below and there is a swelling in the lower heater. For this reason the Qi can no longer circulate. What this means is that fear realizes the separation of Yin and Yang of the upper and lower heaters, of bottom and top and so on."
I need to spend more time reading these gems. They are wonderful. I need more time. It took too long. They are worth the time though. I feel like I understand so much more about the body with this. ...more

Claude Larre and Elisabeth use the Chinese Characters to help us understand what the text is being translated as for better understanding to Westerners. They really bring the text alive.
People interested in Chinese culture and history may find this interesting, but this book is mostly for acupuncturist or people interested in Energy medicine. It's a well done book. It's all about the Heart organ and how it moves Qi and Blood. It houses the Shen and the spirits and the Heart controls the body. I have studied in person under Ellen and she is an amazing healer and teacher. She also works with Donna Eden in energy medicine and is one of the truly gifted healers I've met. She wrote this book in 1993 and it was before her time working with Donna, so this is pre Energy Medicine times. She is an intuitive and healer. She has a council that she works with and this is a dialogue between her and the council. The people she helped in her career had common questions about life, so this book address some of those common problems.
The last two large chapters are about Love and Change. They were the most helpful to me at this time. I have to say, that I have been having a tough time in recent years. So this book was helpful to me.
The biggest take-away from the love section is the paraphrase ahead. When we get that spark and we feel ourselves being opened by this feeling of love to someone. It's not them that is doing this. All that we feel about the person and the world, how the world is bigger and just more, all of that is our own doing. The person is only the spark for that to happen. That experience can't be taken away or diminished because the person leaves, breaks it off or doesn't give that love back. The experience happens in our own hearts and it's ours.
I've never heard anything like this really before and I have to say that it was an epiphany. There have been some real hang-ups from past relationships I've been dealing with. I have a recurring dream about one guy on and off. It really helped me see my feelings for these people, friend or crush in a larger view and in a new way. I feel like it gave me some relief and understanding about what was happening. It didn't matter what their reasons were, my heart still responded in some way. I haven't had that dream again since I figured that out.
She also said we put too much relevance on love and finding it and all relationships are important. It's about our living in community, but that didn't ring true for me, better or worse. At least not at this point in time.
The whole book the council is using the analogy of a garden to explain lots of things. In the change section, the council spoke of change. Our lives go in cycles the way nature does. Well, winter is in nature and winter is fallow and it doesn't look like a whole lot happens. Sometimes, when things feel dark and nothing is happening, it's that winter time and nothing is supposed to happen. We just need to wait for spring. It's the time to figure out what we really want. She put this into many ways of applying it to life. Sometimes, when we lose a job and have a hard time finding a new one. We want something now. Well, sometimes, it's simply winter and it's a good time to figure out why the last job didn't work out and what it is we really want for the next one. She spoke of changing a relationship or habits we don't like. There is some really powerful ideas in here.
Anyway, this really gave me some solace. I mean, I still have all my old problems, but I feel much lighter after reading this. It gave me some new ways to look at life. If you are looking to look at your life differently, I highly recommend this book and especially the last two chapters. They are life changing. She has some good solid advice in here. Some of it's just learning how to grow up.
I'm glad I finished this book. I miss Ellen. She is such an amazing teacher....more

This is part of the NeiJing - the Yellow Emperor's classic. This is the Suwen with 81 chapters. And the 2nd part is the last 81 chapters - Lingsu. In school we are told this is one of the earliest classic texts we have for acupuncture. All throughout this book, they list other classic texts they used back then. I'm shocked how many others there are.
This book is a question and answer book. Huang Di asks a question and his teacher Qi Bo answers. So it's a little like reading someone notes from a lecture. Like any lecture, they have a topic they are discussing and a student will ask a question on a patient that is on a different topic and the teacher goes with it. That happens often here.
There are some typing errors in here. There are times they will say Shaoyin Gallbladder and they mean Shaoyin/ Kidney or something like that. It wasn't often, but I caught a few typos here and there.
It's amazing all the information in here. Much of it isn't used anymore, while much of it is. There is one remedy that I was stunned by. If someone is in a coma and they won't wake after needling the jing well points (tips of fingers) and other remedy's, they say to save the left temple of the person, burn the hair and grind it up and put it into tea and have the coma patient drink it. That is no longer used, plus someone in a coma would be in the hospital. Anyway. I would wake up only so I could spit that out. Good lord.
There are many chapters in here about the weather and astronomy and how it all affects disease. We don't really use that anymore. Anything in the natural world was in here basically.
I'm glad I read this. It reminded me of some things and it was good. There was also a great visualization I want to try at in the later part of the book for a physician to protect themselves from plague and other illnesses while treating people. Interesting.
