I have to give it to this author, he writes excellent battle descriptions. He reminds me of Erikson in that manner, despite of his style being quite different, because these two are the only authors who manage to enthrall me in long battle scenes. I drink in every word and marvel at the images in my mind.
Another lovely trait of Cameron is that he rocks this fuckloads of PoV thing. We have a lot of PoV's in this instalment again, some new characters. And even though I was annoyed AF by a couple of them, I loved seeing the events through their eyes.
There was a new setting and the scope of the events were bigger this time. Not just wild vs men but anyone/thing was fighting anyone/thing or making alliances. To prepare for the even bigger events in the future books. Some questions are answered (view spoiler)[like captal's "angel". what a conceited idiotic tosser... (hide spoiler)] and opposing powers revealed a bit. And the romance here felt a bit more natural but weirdness still clings to it, here and there.
I've had two grievances with this book. The king of Alba a.k.a the moronic fucktard version of Pollyanna. The cunt. He aggravated me like no other. I want him to choke on his balls, but since he doesn't seem to have one, or a spine either, I'll have to accept him being run down by a sword.
The other was that we didn't get enough Red Knight. Most of the time, he was absent even when he was there. Not his usual filling everywhere presence. Still, I loved learning a bit more about his past and "family". (view spoiler)[ his mum is a scary bitch. it would have been shocking if gabriel had turned out normal, considering he was raised by that cunt with the fangy cunt. buuuuuut that made me resent the easy way he opened up in the first book, in the most cringeworthy romance setting ever,to the creepy girly-girl nun. he should have been more guarded than a virgin on her 7th husband. just saying. (hide spoiler)]
This was a better book than the first one in some aspects, but red knight is still my favourite. Ending with one of the soundtracks that started playing in my mind, while reading this book;
I would have liked this book if I was under 16. I'd have liked it even more if I was a teenage boy. I don't know why I keep going with this series. ItI would have liked this book if I was under 16. I am upping my original one star rating by one and half stars and I may continue to third book. oh, and my complaints about the merman.... I'll have to give it to the author, he tied that nicely.

DNF around 50%
I was considering writing a rage review after finishing this book, but can't go on anymore. I don't even want to write a review for it, so I'll just leave the notes I took as I've listened to it.
author sure loves his emotional speeches. I wish someone had told him that he sucks at making them though.
things turned weird with an abrupt sex scene. it was like listening to a teenage boy describing his wet dreams.
turned into a soap opera with immature kids playing the "love game" with fantasy setting.
it's like someone challenged the author; can the hero get even more stupid? act in ever increasing spineless-ness? sadly he accepted the challenge.
no imagination. zero. he could at least come up with some new tech, but no, just use whatever we have at this time. it's not unoriginal at all, because the heroes of the book come from the past. duh.
and the tiny merman kills it for me. I'm done....more

Unfortunately my memory is a bitch who tells me ooo yoThe book felt like a not very well blended soup, because it reminded me of so many other books. Unfortunately my memory is a bitch who tells me ooo you know this/ you've read this sentence before/ ahh soo familiar but rarely gives away where the actual fuck I've seen or heard that thing. So I can't tell you what were "inspirations" behind them, but I am very certain they are there. So many familiar things, although disconnected to each other. Did all these pieces work for the soup story? To be honest, yes mostly. They came together well enough.
Time to time characters were awkward and aggravating, but somehow those qualities were what endeared them most to me. There wasnt't a hidden depth to them, they were predictible and one faceted -except Kat. who must have split personalities, because I cannot explain her being an excellent thief/cold blooded killer/whiny kid/immature shithead/seductress/playful child/clever/moron any other way-. yet I liked them generally.
But there were more than a few moments ,when I wanted to just ask "are there no one with enough brains to ask or do this. maybe a 6 years old?" Some reactions and actions/inactions of the characters didn't make sense. At all. Unlike this granma;
[image] she is my hero from now on
But more like kiwi the bird;
[image] hmmm... I see... I think even that makes more sense.
We need a better visual;
[image] these ninja dudes are the perfect example.
There was even one of those annoying freedom and fighting and destiny speeches. I was up at my feet and overcome with feelies ... of shut it rambo or rocky or whatever you are with your cheesy speeches. On a second thought, this wasn't even done as well as a B-movie war speech.
Buuuut there were dragons! They didn't get as much as page time I'd like but those scenes they were in were quite encouraging. Over all it was not a bad book and I'll continue with the series.
Audio was okay. Narrator had a nice voice and generally okay performance. His female voices didn't make me want to hit him with a shovel on his mouth, which is a strong praise, believe me. But he had no excitement or fear in his voice or a whole lot of feelings. Characters would be in a life threatening situation and one of them would yell "ruuun", at least they'd yell in my mind because narrator just read them in a bored voice which suggested they were attending the dullest tea party ever....more
This will be more of a my feelies about stuff and fangirly essay than a review. There's your warning!
Memories of Ice was literally the longest read of my life. I've never taken more than 2 weeks to finish a book, be it good or dull as watching two turtles go at it. But, due to the curse upon my malazan reading experience, I know this is Erikson's doing, he unleashed stick wizards on me because of my not so lady-like language towards him in my reviews. but kindly, fuck you sir and your cruel, heartbreaking, snotty cry inducing, incredible mind and writing, this took me almost 3 months!!! Do not take my confession as a confirmation of lack of enjoyment, because MoI was stunning!
I am hobliferated after the revelations in this book. The theories that come to mind, even with my low iq points, is mind-boggling. Even more astonishing part is that, the biggest revelation in my opinion, comes through the story line of the character I hated most, Mhybe. Troughout the book, I've learned to turn salty upon seeing her name. Her over-streched self pity ramblings was the worst part in Malazan series, so far. I went from "I'm empathising, oh what a horrible situation" to "arghh again you, shut your piehole already"
With that negativity out of the way, I'll get to my usual blabbering fangirling about characters using excessive amount of artworks, in no particular order.
Quick Ben, shined in this instalment! Learning how he came to be a bridgeburner, not even counting the amazing setting the tale was told in, was heartwarming.
[image] Quick's warren
This is the best fitting drawing of him, because of the revelations we get about warrens *finally!* and his impressive show off with his warrens. I'd put him into my harem if I wasn't sure he'd escape in seconds, so I'll need to come up with a way to entice him. Sigh, the things we do for imaginary-love!
Tool is the second addition to my harem. Yeah, a T'lan Imass, but those who've read this book will understand why. His scenes, especially the ones with Toc, was exceptionally emotional.
[image] Onos T'oolan
And that ending! Hilarious and sweet at the same time! (view spoiler)[after the emotional scene with Toc, his meeting with Hetan was a sweet side of Erikson we don't see that often. Her musing about his eyes, her words and his reaction... priceless! (hide spoiler)]
Which brings me to my two other favourites in this book, Toc and my lady crush Lady Envy. Their banter made me chuckle every time. Envy may be the only aggravating and spoiled bitch of a character I've loved so.
[image] Envy with her bathtub!
I was holding my breath while she was interacting with Drake and was not disappointed! Toc melted me with his humour and then just broke my heart. His loss of "innocence" was cruel and so very real. (view spoiler)[ [image]
the loyalty he inspired in Togg and Fanderay and Tool and even Envy was beautiful. this here is one of the reasons why I love this author! he didn't tell us why, he showed us the building relationships. hell, I was feeling it too! not at Coltaine level, but I would still be furious if not for his soul moving. (hide spoiler)]
I wasn't impressed with Gruntle till that particular scene with Stonny. After that, he took his head out of his arse and "transformed" into a reluctant, grumpy and sexy tiger *wiggling eyebrows*
[image]
I ship him with (view spoiler)[Stonny (hide spoiler)] so hard! We meet K'Chain Che'Malle through his eyes, for the first time, and that scene left an impact on me. I could feel the darkness, the fear, the iron smell of blood.
[image]
My hubby <3 Rake was as magnificent as ever, if not even more! I was simply having heart palpitations as we've finally had a peek under his scales! And who he is, how and why he keeps to himself... I have no words to describe him so I'll use cruel bastard's genius's words instead;
Rake was an atmosphere, a heart-thudding, terror-threaded presence no-one could ignore, much less escape. Violence, antiquity, sombre pathos, and darkest horror — the Son of Darkness was a gelid eddy in immortality's current.
We saw Drake described as cold and unhuman more than once. But here, finally see that unhuman, yes -but cold, no. He is a furnace of ice, different yet burning the same.
[image]
Itkovian is loved by many, but I'll have to confess I'm mostly indifferent to him. If you look up the word "martyr" in dictionary, you can find this amazing drawing of him;
[image]
He was honourable, self-sacrificing and humble, too much for my taste. It came off as a personality version of idiot savant. And boring even though his musings were great material for theological and philosophical brainstorm. In the end, best part about him was what he did for T'lan Imass, a beautiful plot twist!
From the prologue of first book, I didn't like Paran till towards the end of this book. At loooong last, he grew out of whiny and become quite interesting addition. He became a true bridgeburner! (view spoiler)[At the end, when he and Quick stood inside the Moonspawn, I remembered this picture of him and Whiskeyjack;
[image]
watching the fires and Paran saying he wants to be soldier... I was already emotional and this broke the dam for me and I was crying like a toddler. (hide spoiler)]
Whiskeyjack was another character we finally get to know closer. His story line was the most bitter part of Black Coral.
[image] Black Coral
This one is big spoilers, thread with caution. (view spoiler)[ but getting to know him better made everything more hurtful! again fuck you, tree-humping tosser aka Erikson! my heart broke for Korlat!
[image]
but that blessing!!! I have hopes... and bridgeburners... no words for them. they are simply amazing and poignant is too weak a word for their story. (hide spoiler)]
Another thing I love and hate simultaneously about Erikson, is that I haven't felt the need to use dictionary this frequently while reading, ever since reading my first book in english. And back then, best sentence I could construct was "the pen is under the black board. there is a cat next to it". My vocabulary stands richer thanks to this vicious author.
I have so much more to blabber about and more characters to gush over, but this book was mentally and emotionally exhausting and writing about it sapped my energy. Saying goodbye with an amazing art of Moonspawn.

Some parts felt like written byThe idea behind the story is interesting but the way the story enfolds and the interactions between characters are off.
Some parts felt like written by a 7 years old with her rose coloured view of how human reactions should be. For example, there is this dragonwoman who's been going trough PTSD, after witnessing her mum dying at the hand of humans and being beaten and burned so bad she is still scarred, for more than a decade. She hates humans, is almost agoraphobic. And then our heroine comes, puts her hands on her waist and gives her a speech. Bam she is on her way to healing. All psychiatrists are at their feet, slow clapping
I never understood what the heroine found redeemable in the hero. What made her feel or why she was doing something.
The book was a clusterfuck on all fronts except the promise of the story. I think with time and experience, the author could become a better storyteller and rock the dragonworld. I'll keep reading......more

Multiple tentacles snaked out from between her legs and out her back, shooting across the room and impaling the guards in their chests —near their hearts but not through them.
Is it any wonder why I loved this book after that quote?!

I adore this author's humour and characters, even though, they turned a bit repetitive lately.
