About us
About the Wikimedia Foundation The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. We host Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects, build software experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing Wikimedia content, support the volunteer communities and partners who make Wikimedia possible, and advocate for policies that enable Wikimedia and free knowledge to thrive. The Wikimedia Foundation is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that relies on donations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the spread of misinformation posed a significant challenge to public health. In response, Wikimedia volunteers around the world united to launch WikiProject COVID-19, an initiative focused on delivering accurate, reliable information about the virus, the disease, and the pandemic. This effort was not just about writing Wikipedia articles; it was also about creating a trusted source of knowledge accessible to all, especially during a time when misinformation was rampant. Working closely with the World Health Organization (WHO), WikiProject COVID-19 volunteers crafted comprehensive guidelines for vaccine-related content and addressed numerous misinformation campaigns. Their work ensured that Wikipedia articles adhered to the highest standards of scientific accuracy, helping to counteract the flood of misleading information that plagued social media and other platforms. The scale of this initiative was immense. Volunteers contributed to more than 6,900 articles in over 180 languages, making crucial health information accessible to people across the globe. Between December 2019 and December 2020, articles about COVID-19 were viewed more than 579 million times. These articles covered a wide range of topics, from the basic science of the virus to the development and distribution of vaccines, ensuring that readers could find accurate information no matter where they were or what language they spoke. As the world continues to navigate the post-pandemic landscape, the contributions of Wikimedia volunteers remain a vital resource in promoting health literacy and combating disinformation. Efforts like this are highlighted in the Anti-Disinformation Repository, a collection of tools and activities that illustrate how Wikimedia is an antidote to disinformation. Do you care about the future of free, reliable, and open knowledge? Last April, the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia affiliates (independent organizations supporting volunteers who contribute to Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia, and other free knowledge projects) published an open letter to shape the future of the internet. The Global Digital Compact is a process led by UN member states to establish principles and commitments that can help channel the immense potential benefits of digital technologies. 🌎🌍🌏🌐 We called on governments worldwide to include 3 key commitments in the Compact to help public interest projects not only continue to exist, but also thrive in our shared, digital future: 1️⃣ Protect and empower communities to govern online public interest projects. 2️⃣ Promote and protect digital public goods by supporting a robust digital commons from which everyone, everywhere can benefit. 3️⃣ Build and deploy artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to support and empower, not replace, people who create content and make decisions in the public interest. Over 20 Wikimedia affiliates, 4 other organizations, and more than 650 individuals from 80+ countries have signed the letter already. Read our blog post for more details: https://lnkd.in/eVsPE57K And, if you want to help shape the future of the internet in a way that protects free and open knowledge, please sign the letter! ✍🏽
