The hidden Mini Battle menu in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

A Mini Battle is a type of minigame featured in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its remake Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3.

Description[]

Mini Battles are fought in certain levels after a Yoshi gets a key to the Bonus Game Shack where it takes place. A Mini Battle involves a Yoshi competing against a Bandit in either one of four battles:

  • Gather Coins, in which Yoshi and Bandit compete to collect the most coins.
  • Popping Balloons, in which Yoshi and Bandit compete to pop the balloon containing either a 10-Point Star or a 20-Point Star.
  • Throwing Balloons, in which Yoshi and Bandit input a series of buttons to toss a balloon back and forth, and they must avoid having the balloon pop on them.
  • Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest, in which Yoshi and Bandit each spit watermelon seeds at one another until one of them loses all of their health.

The Level Selection screen features a hidden Mini Battles menu from which the player can select any Mini Battle to replay. To access it, they must hold Select Button and then input X Button, X Button, Y Button, B Button and lastly A Button. In Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, the input combination was changed due to a Game Boy Advance featuring different controls than a Super Nintendo Entertainment System; just as before, Select Button has to be held, but the player now has to input L Button, L Button, B Button, A Button and lastly R Button for the Mini Battles menu to show up. This code is revealed by a certain Message Block in Sluggy The Unshaven's Fort.

The Mini Battles menu allows any of the four Mini Battles to be replayed. Aside from this, there is a two-player version of Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest as well as a four-button variation of Throwing Balloons mode (playable in either single-player or multiplayer) alongside the usual six-button variation. The two-player Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest was later removed from Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, although it adds a five-button variation of Throwing Balloons.
