Personality

Tsubasa is a hard worker who cares about Ellee-chan. Tsubasa dreams of being able to fly, so he studies very hard to make it happen. He struggles to express his emotions and doesn't like being pushed around. However, Tsubasa trusts those who have faith in him.

Relationships

  • Nijigaoka Yoyo: Tsubasa has a close relationship with Yoyo due to their connection to Sky Land. Thanks to Yoyo, Tsubasa was able to live in her house and study aerodynamics.
  • Ellee-chan: Tsubasa cares deeply about Ellee-chan, and goes to great lengths to protect her. Tsubasa is incredibly loyal, and deems himself as Ellee-chan's knight. Tsubasa is usually chosen to take care of Ellee-chan when Sora, Mashiro, and Ageha are all busy.
  • Sora Harewataru: Despite their rough meeting, after Tsubasa opens up to Sora, he becomes good friends with her. He and Sora both have things in common, such as caring for Ellee-chan, and a similar hard working attitude. Tsubasa goes along with Sora's antics, and gets equally as excited as her when they see anything hero related.
  • Nijigaoka Mashiro: Tsubasa gets along well with Mashiro, and admitted to Mashiro that he is happy to be friends with someone as kind as her.
  • Hijiri Ageha: Originally, Tsubasa wasn't comfortable around Ageha, due to Ageha's more extroverted nature. However, he slowly becomes Ageha's friend after understanding how her goal to protect Ellee-chan aligns with his, and how she trusts him too. Tsubasa appreciates Ageha's willingness to help him, but prefers looking after his own things. He notices how hard Ageha works and after some gentle requests, Tsubasa is allowed to help Ageha whenever she needs it.
  • Kakeru & Puwa: His father and mother. Tsubasa is very close with his parents, but gets embarrassed by their affectionate doting. Kakeru is also the main reason why Tsubasa wants to learn how to fly.

Etymology

Yuunagi (夕凪)? means "evening calm"[1].

Tsubasa (ツバサ)?, also written as "翼", means "wing" [2], which refers to Tsubasa's Pretty Cure alter ego, Cure Wing. In episode 26, it's revealed that Ageha helped Tsubasa come up with his surname.

Cure Wing is a specialized appendage found on birds, insects, and bats, enabling them to achieve flight through the motion of flapping up and down[3].

History

Past

While riding on the back of a passenger bird with his father, Tsubasa was knocked off and started free-falling. Despite being unable to fly, his father miraculously managed to rescue him. Trying to find ways to fly himself, Tsubasa decided to try to use the wind from a storm but ended up falling through a tunnel in the sky, where he found himself in Sorashido City. There, he met Yoyo, who allowed him to live with her and gave him his own private room to study aerodynamics.

Becoming Cure Wing

Tsubasa notices Ellee-chan falling down, so he rushes into the room to help her, but quickly hides when Sora walks in. That evening, he approaches Ellee-chan again, but is seen by Sora this time. Tsubasa jumps out of the window to make his escape but Sora catches him with ease. In the living room, Tsubasa explains to Sora and Mashiro how he ended up living with Yoyo, but ends up making Sora suspicious of him. The next morning, he and Sora watch Ellee-chan try to stand up by herself, and both rush in to catch Ellee-chan when she falls. Yoyo then approaches them and takes the pair to Tsubasa's research room. There, Tsubasa explains his past to Sora, which puts him and Sora on good terms. However, Kabaton summons a Ranborg, and despite Tsubasa's best efforts to hold onto her, Ellee-chan follows after the Cures. Tsubasa thinks for a moment, before reading the wind and attempting to fly himself.HSPC08

However, despite trying to fly, Tsubasa falls to the ground. He decides to roll his way into the city, where he confronts Kabaton until Ellee-chan arrives to help him. At first, Tsubasa is reluctant to join Ellee-chan in her sling bag, but hops in, only to notice that the sling bag is moving a lot slower, resulting in Kabaton kidnapping them. But Tsubasa is shortly thrown out once Kabaton grabs Ellee-chan. However, Tsubasa still has the sling bag, so he sneaks inside of the Ranborg in his human form to rescue Ellee-chan. This leads to Kabaton chasing them, and when Tsubasa reaches the edge of the Ranborg, he tells Ellee-chan to escape. Tsubasa realizes Ellee-chan won't leave without him, so he hangs off the sling bag but it moves too slowly, so he sacrifices himself by letting go. Ellee-chan saves him from falling, but she's then caught by the Ranborg. Desperate to save Ellee-chan, a light awakens in Tsubasa's chest, giving him a Sky Mirage. Ellee-chan also grants him the Sky Tone Wing, which allows him to transform into Cure Wing. With these powers, Wing is able to fly with ease and rescue Ellee-chan. Wing is later joined by Sky and Prism, who help him purify the Ranborg. Sometime later, Tsubasa helps Sora and Mashiro look after Ellee-chan, where Sora says he is Ellee-chan's knight.HSPC09

Making Yakitai

After Tsubasa joins the team, he is invited to his own welcome party by both Sora and Mashiro. He remembers being given yakitai by his parents on special occasions, so he tries to make them with both girls using the ingredients on Earth. However, he thinks something is missing despite him liking the taiyakis. Tsubasa soon realizes that the real reason he wants to eat yakitai again is to relive the moment he had with his loved ones, and this wouldn't have happened without his new friends. At the welcome party, Tsubasa happily celebrates with his friends.HSPC10

Understanding Ageha

Tsubasa has a bad impression of Ageha after she woke him up. Tsubasa, along with the girls and Ellee-chan, later arrive at Mount Raso to do a riddle, where he ends up being paired with Ageha. During their walk up the mountain, Ageha's extroverted nature frustrates Tsubasa, causing him to go off on his own. After bumping into Sora and Mashiro, Tsubasa expresses how he doesn't get along easily with Ageha, but the two girls tell him Ageha wants to protect Ellee-chan with him. Tsubasa runs back up the mountain to make amends with Ageha, when she and Ellee-chan are taken hostage by Kabaton's Ranborg. Wing is able to save them though after Ageha tricks the Ranborg into letting them go. After Wing takes them to a safe place, he gets some help from Sky and Prism before purifying the Ranborg. As the sun sets, Tsubasa start to feel more comfortable around Ageha.HSPC11

Going To Sky Land

Tsubasa temporarily returns to Sky Land with Sora, Mashiro and Ellee-chan, where they are thanked by Sky Land's King and Queen.HSPC14 There, he also reunites with his parents, who both mistake him to have married to Mashiro, which embarrasses Tsubasa. Unfortunately, he gets hurt due to being too reckless at dealing with the giant Ranborg, and is unable to protect the King, Queen and Ellee-chan when Battamonda confronts them. He and his friends then return to Sorashido City in hopes of finding a cure for the King and Queen by asking for Yoyo's help.HSPC15

A New Power

Tsubasa has noticed how hard Ageha is working around the house, and after catching her sleeping at the table, Tsubasa asks Ageha if he can help her. The next day, Tsubasa joins Ageha and Ellee-chan at the mural, where he helps Ageha paint her picture. Tsubasa at first isn't sure if Ellee-chan should help, but relaxes after Ageha figures out a way to make the child's painting work. With the painting done, Tsubasa joins Ageha to protect the mural against Battamonda. Wing gives Butterfly a boost during her one-on-one with the Ranborg, and their feelings grant them the Sky Tone W Flying. Wing tries to perform Updraft Shining with Butterfly, but instead, they summon the Colorful Action Mix Palette. Wing decides to keep fighting the Ranborg, and is given a power boost when Butterfly figures out how to use the item. Wing then participates in Titanic Rainbow Attack to purify the Ranborg. Afterward, Tsubasa, along with Sora and Mashiro, actively makes sure to help Ageha as much as he can.HSPC19

Expanding His Knowledge

Tsubsa feels like he hasn't been actively pursuing a dream ever since he became Cure Wing. When Yoyo chats with him, Tsubasa admits how he's feeling. Yoyo takes Tsubasa and the girls to her vegetable garden in the mountain highlands, and teaches Tsubasa about plants and compost. After helping the group find shelter from the rain, Tsubasa is praised for his weather knowledge. This has Tsubasa realize that he has been learning new things even if he didn't have a dream to pursue yet.

When Battamonda summon a eagle model Ranborg, Wing and the other Cures struggle to fight against it, until Wing remembers that he can use his knowledge about the wind currents to their advantage. With Wing's climate and geography knowledge, the Cures successfully purify the Ranborg. After returning home, Tsubasa decides that he'll continue learning new things so that one day he will figure out his dream. Tsubasa is also grateful when Yoyo gives him some books, and the Mirror Pad so he can learn new things.HSPC21

Tsubasa is later able to use his knowledge when he goes to the airport with his friends to meet Mashiro's parents. There, he explains the mechanics on how planes work. On the observation deck, Tsubasa befriends a girl named Amano Shoko, who is also interested in planes as her mother is a pilot. During the fight against Minoton, Wing is able to apply his knowledge of reading the wind to defeat the Ranborg, as he understands how planes connect memories with the passengers, thus wanting to let Shoko ride the plane her mother pilots. In the end, Tsubasa is happy that he got to use his knowledge to help others, while also able to meet Mashiro's parents.HSPC26

Helping The Dragon Tribe

When the Bright Jewel from Sky Land goes missing, Tsubasa is asked by Yoyo to help retrieve it. Upon arriving on an island, Tsubasa happily meets the Dragon Tribe, and learns that they were trying to polish the Bright Jewel. Although the dragons intend to return the Bright Jewel, they tell Tsubasa and his friends that they cannot leave the island. However, after Wing encourages the dragons to stop believing in what their ancestors used to think of the Sky Land people, he ends up helping them to fly again while protecting them from Skearhead's Kyoborg. After returning to Sky Land's mainland, Tsubasa is embarrassed by Yoyo recommending him to become a sage for the kingdom, but accepts her suggestion after she tells him that he can use his knowledge to help others like how he did with the dragons.HSPC38

Vows With Ellee-chan

Tsubasa is worried after realizing that Ellee-chan wants to marry him, but plays along after learning that she wants to become closer friends with him. However, when Tsubasa resumes his work and also overthinks about the responsibilities of marriage, he unknowingly begins ignoring Ellee-chan again. When he sees that Ellee-chan has taken his important book, Tsubasa demands her to return it, but is later told by Ageha that he isn't paying enough attention to Ellee-chan. Wing later saves Majesty from Skearhead's Kyoborg's barrier to tell her that he still cares for her, and together they fight against the Kyoborg with Butterfly's help. After the fight, Tsubasa promises Ellee-chan that he will be a better knight and friend to her, which makes Ellee-chan forgive him.HSPC40

Epilogue

After the final battle, Tsubasa decides to return to Sky Land. When bidding farewell to Ageha, he tells her that he will be traveling across Sky Land to expand his knowledge to become a qualified sage, while also telling her that she has inspired him to become a cool adult like her in the future. However, he decides to visit Sorashido City the next day, happy to see his friends again.HSPC50
