This book is a real eye-opener and quite an emotional read. It's the story of Jose, a fillipino who went to the US at the age of 12, assuming he got there legally to live with his grandparents leaving his mother behind, but he quickly realises that he's one of the "illegals" in the country, even though his grandparents are legal immigrants.
He uncovers the ridicloussness of immigration system in the USA, his life in hiding in plain sight, the opportunities he missed and the life he made up and the things he sacrificied living for long years as undocumented in America. It has a lot of information I didn't know about the US systems, the weird laws they impose, and the dillemma of not even being able to fit in or get out.
He's a reporter and that's the yway he bult up his life, and it shows in writing this book, though I'd say that some chapter felt repetitive, or had the same info in the same way, but it written well, with short chapters and really emotional narrative. He's such a good writer that during the first half, I forgot I was reading a memoir, as it felt like a really good novel with a powerful narrative.
I think it's an important read for understanding immigrants and documentation in America....more

This book was an emotional ride. It has a very slow beginning and I was about to DNF it, despite the brilliant writing, and I got to halfway through and it just hooked me.
It's more of a metaphorical book about Ireland. It's a story of the country suffering and its economy and how it affected the farmers especially, and we examine the life of a certain Irish family, the Blacks. Their father is a sickly farmer, and the two brothers Cormac and Doharty, are the usual bickering siblings, but it's so much deeper than that. Cormac, their mother's favourite moves away from the farm, leaving Doharty, the closest to their father, to take care of the farm and the father's declining health. It deals with religion, Irish laws, family ties and obligations, death, and suicide.
The characters aren't entirely likeable, even when you do feel for some of them sometimes, they all commit something grave that makes you question everything. The chapters are short, the beginning is a task to get through but once you do it's worth a read, the writing is brilliant, the Irish touches here and there added for its authenticity.
Trigger warning for animal abuse and suicide....more

Another book that loses me because of the style rather than the ideas. In this book, Rushkoff tries to dissect "the frozen, overwhelmed by an always-on, live-streamed reality that our human bodies and minds can never truly inhabit. And our failure to do so has had wide-ranging effects on every aspect of our lives", bu I don't think he does a very good job, because his style is frantic and all over the place, as if he himself is in the grips of the Present Shock.
Each chapter tries to see to illustrate the effects of Present Shock on a different aspect of our lives, with stories and data to aid him him, but the jump from an idea to another was jarring, and I found myself lost most of the time of the main idea he's trying to convey.
I can see that it's a worthwhile idea, and I can see its effects on my own life and the way I consume media and my everyday activities, I just found the book not the easiest to read or to convey these ideas in a simple or coherent way, sadly....more

This is a tricky little book and very thought-provoking. I cannot say I'm well-versed in the field of "free will" discussion and I definitely didn't read enough about it. My own idea is that criminals act according to their free will, like those who aren't criminals, and thus should be punished. But one of the ideas this book poses is that none of us are really free, so why should criminals be punished for acts they had no control over? And many other questions in the same vain.
It's a good insight into the way someone else thinks, even if I don't necessarily agree with it....more

A Korean family saga, starting with the Japanese occupation of Korea till many years later. We see Koreans living in their homes in fear of the Japanese among them, and the Koreans who went to Japan for better lives, only for them and all their generations to come to be treated like pigs. Some of the main themes are the lives of Koreans in Japan, the yakuza, the struggle of beauty, the history of colonial Christianity, immigration, the meaning of home and patriotism, wealth and poverty and discrimination, industries Koreans dominated in Japan due to lack of other opportunities, mainly pachinko and more. As Min Jin Lee said, she choose the title "Pachinko": "...Pachinko business and the game itself serve as metaphors for the history of Koreans in Japan - a people caught in seemingly random global conflicts - as they win, lose and struggle for their place and for their lives."
It's an emotional novel, spanning years and generations with shifting points of view of the members of the family, split into three parts, each indicating a shift in the tone and changes in the circumstances. It's a saga that begins with a matriarch, and you find yourself feeling for all of them, thrown into these horrible situations, and each death from that family really did hurt me.
It's sometimes disorienting to see 6 years passing between a chapter and another, but I was so sucked in this family, that I didn't mind the passage of time as long as we're seeing what has become of the characters. It left me crying, and I don't think I did it justice with this review but it got me really emotional and thinking of a lot of things I didn't know....more

Like the title implies, this book is a compilation of speeches from prominent women, most of them are suffrage movement women and abolitionists, while there are others from different fields of life. The problem is that I expected the full speeches to be here, but actually each woman gets an illustration, a small bio and an extract from her speech, which is fine, since you can actually google her and search for the full speeches, but I would've appreciated it if the full speeches were included. Also, I had an issue with the lack of international diversity in this, as most of them were from the US or Europe, which might've been understandable years ago, but I think the resources now would've made it easier to include more speeches from Arab or Asian or Latina women.
Otherwise, I do think it's a good read for feminists, as actually a lot of the women in this book I didn't know anything about, and it could be a good basic reference book for examples of good speeches.

While the art was nice and it did introduce me to something new, as I have almost no knowledge of the White Rose resistance group, the students who were fighting the Nazis and eventually paid the price by their lives, but the story missed narrative, and I think that a lot of people who don't know anything about it would be really lost. Most of the characters were indistinguishable, except maybe for the Scholl siblings. It also had at the end translations of their leaflets and that's a nice addition to the book.
