You really have to be a lover of slow-paced novels to enjoy this one, because it takes its time to pick up the pace and lay out the whole story. I'm a lover of slow-paced novels, and I still had trouble getting into it at the beginning.
This is a charged novel, with a lot of politics and emotional trauma. We follow our main Malaysian heroine in three stages of her life: her early youth when she was a prissoner in a Japanese war camp, the time when she went to Malaysia's highlands and her work with a japanese gardener, and her at old age going back to that garden and remembering her life and facing her demons.
It shows the horrors that the Japanese did to their neighbouring countries and their prisoner camps, and shows differing vie points on the war from different Japanese people. It shows how you can go about to heal your emotional scars, and how some things can never be healed even with time. It also goes deep in the art of Japanese gardening, which I barely knew anything about. It delves deep in the politics of Asia, which I also didnt know much about.
It's a very emotional story about loss and grief and coming to terms with what happeened to you and how you choose to live with it....more

This book is my choice for Germany for Read Around the World challenge. I think I'm one of the few people who still hadn't read Anne Frank's diary. This book made me think a lot. One thing I thought of is authenticity, after knowing that there were a couple of versions: the first version that was published omitted a lot of what Anne wrote about her mother and her sexual feelings, afterwards the definitive edition was published adding whatever was omitted. IS that all or are there anything else that we don't know about? how much was edited?
It's a diary of a young girl who started writing it at the age of 12~13 till almost 15 and she goes through a lot. At the beginning, she was insufferable, and I couldn't see the point of reading it, but when she starts facing their dreadful situation and she goes into hiding with her family, she gains this deep perspective while also having thoughts of her crush and troubles with her parents who don't understand her, like every teenager.
I think these diaries would've been a good basis for a book about the Secret Annex with its 8 residents, like Anne wanted. The residents of the secret Annex who spent almost two years in hiding are Ann, her sister Margot, and her mother and father, The Van Daans family which consisted of a mother and a father and their son Peter, and a family friend.
These diaries hold so much weight but they're still the writings of a young girl and sometimes they're not more than that. They illustrate their daily lives and some context to what's happening, but on their own, they're touching towards the end but would've been better as a part of a big project on the war.
But I still don't deny its importance in the diaries/memoir genre....more

It's such a strange novel, and I think that its first line and intro and the first part and Gregor's struggle are the best parts for me. This was my 2nd audiobook ever, and though I still think that audio books aren't for me, I think it was suitable for a book like this. The novel as so many people talks about Gregor Samsa who wakes up one day and finds himself has turned into a disgusting insect (a cockroach), and we see how it becomes his main concern how to get to work without anyone seeing his new form.
Through Samsa, we get to know his family from his sister, who's a pivotal character and who helps him till she decides he's no longer worth it, his father who pretended for 5 years that he's not able to work so that Gregor becomes the main breadwinner for the household, and his mother who can't stand the sight of him after transformation. The novel of course discusses a lot of ideas like isolation and loneliness and depression and obsession with work.
It's a unique novel despite its short length, with its simple yet effective writing style which conveys Gregor's inner struggle. What's special about a novel like this, is that everyone could understand in a way and ends up with a different lesson. It also still talks of topics still relevant today, as we still discuss how isolation and becoming a workaholic could affect someone....more

This is a collection of stories of people with of different backgrounds and with different experiences from Haiti, whether they've lived all their lives there, or immigrated, or have never been there and only know about it from their parents. Haiti been through occupation that left it in the poor state it is in now, and it shows from the author's writing, the hope in these stories is very fleeting.
1- Dosas: is about a failed relationships and nurse struggling with her job and how she deals with betrayal.
2- In the Old Days: is about a girl who loses a father she never knew, and we knew more about the traditions of life and death in Haiti, and the stories of those who immigrated and never went back, and those who did. We see in a lot of the stories the two faces of Haiti, the one designed for tourists with beaches and museums and the other with poor people and rape victims, and it shows in some of the upcoming stories.
3- The Port-au-Prince Special: An example of Haitian who are used and tossed aside by tourists is the girl in this story, who a man promises to marry her and leaves her with a disease she can't escape.
4- The Gift: a story about cheating, and while this is the biggest topic I don't want to read in fiction, the author excelled in writing about the feeling of loss.
5- Hot-Air Balloons: While this story doesn't mainly take place n Haiti, it's another story about the ugly side of Haiti and immigrants' experiences and everything the have to lose.
6- Sunrise, Sunset: a story about the suffering of motherhood and a painful portrayal of a mother's deteriorating mind due to dementia.
7- Seven Stories: a story of two childhood friends and how they meet again as adults and how the politics of Haiti and neighboring islands has affected their lives.
8- Without Inspection: One of the most painful stories in the collection, about the last moments of a dying illegal immigrant from Haiti and what he sees and thinks of in his last moments.
It's a solid collection with ups and downs, and with a bit of a slow start, but I enjoyed it....more

My choice for Turkey in Around the World challenge. This is my first read of Orhan Pamuk, and it's not one of the people recommended, so I won't judge him as an author just based on this book.
It's a novel about Turkey in the true sense of the word, and I think that's what I'm truly looking for from these novels, besides being entertained of course. On the surface, it's the chronicles of a father-son relationship, multiple fathers and their sons and their relationships. The author uses two important myths and recounts them a number of times to allude to the characters' relationships: The story of Oedipus, and the story of Sohrab and Rostam from the The Shahnama. Both are important mythological texts, where a father kills his son in one of them and a son kills his father in another, and we see how both of these "plot points' come into play on this novel.
It also focuses on a lot in Turkey, like construction development over the years, well-diggers and their role in society, the secular society in Turkey and the clash between religious and secular people, also the relationship between Iran and Turkey. It's a social and political look at the country through the eyes of out characters.
Some of the things I didn't like were the characters which were so flat, despite some of the traumatising things that happened to them and their actions, I might think it's the fault of the translation and I'll wait for my judgement on his characters till I've read another book by him. Some of the plot points didn't make sense or were too convenient, or the connection between real life and the myths and stories felt too artificial and imposed, but it had some touching moments and in the end, it really did feel like a glimpse into Turkey, as I knew a lot about the country from reading it, but the jury is still out on whether I like Orhan Pamuk's writing or not....more

...more
First line: "I am a spy, a sleeper, a spook, a man of two faces."
This is a novel about identity and home and country and communism and immigration. It's a political and psychological and philosophical novel. It takes us between USA and Vietnam, as we witness the fall of Saigon to communism, while those who opposed tried desperately to escape.
We see all of this through the eyes of our main character, a communist working on a general's team as his captain but actually is a spy. We see him struggle on so many levels. Firstly, being a communist working alongside people who oppose him and in the case of one of best friends, hate him. Secondly, his struggle being of a mixed descent, from a french father and a Vietnamese mother, but he finds no home for him in either Vietnam or France, or even USA where he fled a number of times.
Identity is a main theme in the novel. While in the USA, the protagonist encounters those who see clinging to their heritage even though they're born in the US is a waste of time, like the Japanese woman, who is criticized for not being Japanese enough. He sees all kinds of people and identity is something different to each of them, like the American director who sees no use in representing Vietnamese people in a film about Vietnam, and the Vietnamese who doesn't consider their neighbors Vietnamese enough, and so on.
The novel is written as a long confession letter, where our unnamed characters tells us the pains of his life and his country. In a novel like this, you don't have to know the full situation of communism in the area, but it would definitely help out a lot if you do, as this is what slowed my pace in the beginning.
The thing that stopped me from giving it the full 5 stars is the ending, and the last few chapters. I didn't like them a lot, even though the details of the confession and mental torture were so vivid, the ending was weird for his characters, and the transformation was so out of character.
All in all, I really enjoyed this novel about a sympathizer who did nothing for those he sympathized with, and I'd definitely read more from this author....more
