A Flipswitch Panel is an object that first appeared in Super Mario Galaxy and returns in Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario 3D World. They usually start off with just a blue colored switch with a question mark (?) on their top face. However, The Gateway Galaxy had Flipswitch Panels with just circles on them, not ? or !. However, A Flipswitch Panel will not change until Mario or Luigi, steps on it. When either one of them steps on the panel, it will turn yellow and will have an exclamation mark (!) on it. Stepping on a yellow panel will cause it to revert to a blue state with the question mark. A galaxy called the Flipswitch Galaxy is made entirely out of Flipswitch Panels. Some Panel missions may have Cosmic Clones in the missions. Cosmic Clones cannot activate any Flipswitch Panels in their wake. When all panels are yellow, the panels turn green and they will have squares on them and something will be unlocked.

Locations[]

Super Mario Galaxy[]

  • Gateway Galaxy - Mario has to destroy the machine holding the Grand Star captive by stepping on the Flipswitch Panels inside the last planet.
  • Good Egg Galaxy - The mission Dino Piranha has a planetoid comprised of Flipswitch Panels. If Mario goes down a Warp Pipe that a Piranha Plant was blocking, he will emerge on an optional planetoid with four Flipswitch Panels. Once he activates them, more will be summoned, and he will have to activate those to get to the next planet.
  • Flipswitch Galaxy - Mario has to activate all of the Flipswitch Panels to get the Power Star.
  • Dusty Dune Galaxy - Mario has to head through a subterranean tunnel on his way to the tower where the Power Star is located in the mission Soaring Through the Desert Winds. In the tunnel, a Thwomp can be seen smashing two Flipswitch Panels. If Mario walks on them while the Thwomp is preparing to attack again, Star Bits will be summoned on the three wheels right afterward.
  • Toy Time Galaxy - The secret mission The Flipswitch Chain has two square planets with many Flipswitch Panels on them, with the Flipswitch Panels having Tox Boxes (Fast Tox Boxes in the Fast Foe Comet mission) or spiked panels. Mario has to activate these panels to summon the Power Star.
  • Dreadnought Galaxy - On the Chibi Wanwan Path Planet, Mario has to activate the Flipswitch Panels to deactivate an electric fence blocking his way forward. Doing so causes the Chibi Wanwans that spawn in the dog houses to vanish, leaving behind many Star Bits for him to get.
  • Snow Cap Galaxy - Five are found on the small planetoid where Mario has to catch five Star Bunnies. Activating them reveals a Fire Flower.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

  • Sky Station Galaxy - The second planet in Storming the Sky Fleet's titular Sky Fleet has many flipswitch panels that have to be activated. The first set is available immediately, with the second set being unlocked by activating the former. Cosmic Clones attack Mario in the second set, forcing him to plot a route; they are destroyed when activating the second set, at which point a Launch Star leading to the third planet in the Sky Fleet appears.
  • Rolling Masterpiece Galaxy - Mario has to roll over six Flipswitch Panels in a triangular formation with the Star Ball following an elevator ride from an artist's pallete-shaped planet. Activating them causes a bridge that serves as his way forward to appear.
  • Sweet Mystery Galaxy - During the msision Bulb Berry's Mysterious Glow, the starting planet ends in five small planetoids that have Flipswitch Panels that Mario needs to activate to summon a Launch Star leading to the present planet. In Bulb Berry's Purple Coin Glow, he will not encounter these.
  • Mario Squared Galaxy - Flipswitch Panels comprise the hands, face, and dungaree buttons of the starting planet. They must all be activated to summon a Power Star.
  • Grandmaster Galaxy - Flipswitch Panels appear in the second section, having to be activated to summon a Launch Star leading to an electric maze that serves as the third section.
