"Karate Koopa" is the forty-first animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. It is paired with the live-action segment "Adee Don't."

Plot[]

Mario and the gang return to the city of Sayonara (previously seen in "Mario Meets Koop-zilla") to search help from a martial artist named Misaki. As they make their way through the city, they are ambushed by Karate Koopa (who is apparently either King Koopa with a lot of makeup or else a distant cousin) and a band of Ninjis. The Mario Bros. believe they can handle the situation but are easily defeated. Karate Koopa takes both Princess Toadstool and Toad captive so that he can sell them into slavery. However, before he can capture the Marios as well, Misaki arrives and defeats Karate Koopa's Ninjis. Nevertheless, Karate Koopa still manages to escape with his prisoners. Knowing they won't be able to defeat Karate Koopa fighting the way they do now, the Mario Bros. ask him for training which he agrees to. Realizing the Bros. are woefully poor at martial arts, Misaki teaches them "Plumb Fu", which is essentially using weapons based on plumbing equipment.

Once the training is done, the trio makes its way to Karate Koopa's lair, but he was expecting them and a trap was set. Unaware of the trap the group is captured and chained to a boulder. Looking to get rid of his enemies, Karate Koopa hurls them into the ocean. Misaki attempts to break the chains but cannot. Mario, has a hacksaw, which he easily cuts the chains with. Once the characters are out, they find their weapons and infiltrate Karate Koopa's palace. Inside they are confronted by a band of Ninjis. They start to fight and are now evenly matched.

Misaki tells Mario to go on and confront Karate Koopa while he and Luigi take on the Ninjis. Mario runs in on Karate Koopa and challenges him to a fight. The two fight each other for a while and it seems that Karate Koopa, who's bigger and stronger will win. However, Mario manages to turn the tide of battle and defeats his enemy, who then uses a potion to escape into a warp zone. Back in Misaki's house, Misaki awards the Marios with black belts.

Trivia/Goofs[]

  • Ninjis debut in the show, though they are called Ninjas.
  • Princess Toadstool was not voiced by Jeannie Elias in this episode.
  • At one point, Mario goes from his martial arts costume to his normal clothes then back again in just three screen changes.
  • Because alcoholic references are inappropriate for a children's show, Karate Koopa and his guests drank Koopa Kola (a spoof of Coca Cola) instead of sake.
