Super Mario

Rolling logs are a recurring type of platform in the Super Mario series. They first appear in Super Mario 64.

Rolling logs are cylindrical wooden platforms that roll around upon being stood on by Mario or another character. In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, rolling logs have a texture of a tree. In the New Super Mario Bros. sub-series, they bear less of a resemblance to tree logs, in part because of the target-shaped markings all over them.

In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, Mario (or Yoshi, Luigi, or Wario in the remake) can move a rolling log by either running onto it or jumping until they are taken to their destination. If Mario or another character is not standing on a rolling log, it begins to roll back to its initial position.

In the New Super Mario Bros. games, rolling logs are stationary platforms, and if Mario or another character stands on one for too long, they fall off.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS[]

There is one rolling log in Lethal Lava Land and Tall, Tall Mountain each. In the former course, there is a mission named Red-Hot Log Rolling that is centered around using a rolling log to get to a Power Star.

New Super Mario Bros.[]

Rolling logs only appear in the underground sections of World 6-3, where Mario or Luigi has to use them to safely travel across the Poisoned Water.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

Rolling logs once again only appear in a single level, specifically World 5-3.

New Super Mario Bros. U/New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]

Rolling logs appear in the level Bridge over Poisoned Waters as well as its corresponding challenge, Poison-Swamp Scramble.
