Dredge The Pale Reach: How to avoid Narwhal? Dredge guide, tips

The Narwhal monster patrols The Pale Reach in the DLC for the game Dredge. Our guide tells you how to avoid Narwhal's attacks, as well as how to chase away the boss and distract the monster.

Last update: 21 November 2023

The underwater creature called Narwhal makes exploring the Pale Reach in Dredge much more difficult. This page of the guide explains how to get away from Narwhal and how to temporarily get rid of the DLC monster. You'll also learn whether the game allows you to kill Narwhal.

First encounter with Narwhal

1 - Dredge The Pale Reach: How to avoid Narwhal? - FAQ - Dredge Guide
  1. You'll encounter Narwhal for the first time shortly after reaching the Pale Reach. After entering the archipelago, you will reach an indestructible ice barrier. Next to it you'll see a ship where you can find the Photographer, who will give you The Narwhal quest - we have described it in more detail on the DLC Quests page.
  2. You must provide fish to lure the beast to that place. Narwhal will then jump out of the water and destroy the ice barrier. This will allow you to enter the main part of Pale Reach.

Confrontations with Narwhal in the Pale Reach

2 - Dredge The Pale Reach: How to avoid Narwhal? - FAQ - Dredge Guide
  1. From now on, Narwhal can appear in the central part of the Pale Reach, i.e. in the area where Central Camp is located. Fortunately, the monster does not go far as the side areas of the archipelago.
  2. You will be warned about the oncoming beast attack with particular sounds. Narwhal has a yellow horn and you can recognize it from a distance.
3 - Dredge The Pale Reach: How to avoid Narwhal? - FAQ - Dredge Guide
  1. You cannot kill Narwhal. The only thing you can do is either keep avoiding the monster or create distractions so that Narwhal gets off your back for some time.
  2. If you have already acquired the Haste skill, it will make it easier for you to escape. If you do not have it, try to swim in a straight line and leave the central tank.
  3. If you already have the Banish skill available in the main campaign, you can activate it to temporarily scare away the monster (example in the picture). This will allow you to explore the central reservoir in peace and avoid the risk of damage/loss of cargo.

  1. A feeding station can be found on the same island where Central Camp is located (see the pictures above).

  1. This is where you can leave the fish you caught. It's not important what kind of fish it is, but it is recommended to "sacrifice" the most common fish: Icefish.
  2. After leaving the fish at the station, move away from it. Narwhal should appear any time now and will get busy eating fish for a while.
7 - Dredge The Pale Reach: How to avoid Narwhal? - FAQ - Dredge Guide
  1. You can unlock passages to Western Bearing and Eastern Terminus (i.e. to the western and eastern parts of the archipelago) in a similar fashion. There are more feeding stations there. You need to fill them with fish to the maximum, which will trigger Narwhal to appear and destroy more ice barriers. This is necessary to explore 100% of the Pale Reach.
